Chapter 5 The Battle at Sea
The storm on the sea became more and more intense, and the Venetians who were chasing the Genoese did not relax at all. They pounced on them like wolves to smear the lonely sailboat of the Genoese.
On the ship, Christopher, who was in charge of the overall situation, was still calm and composed. He was able to receive generous treatment in the Doria family not only because of his medical skills. His early experience in joining the army made this one-eyed old man still calm and comfortable even in the face of the unpredictable sea.
"The enemy from the left wing is about to suppress them!"
Christopher found a small Venetian warship trying to circumvent them and then yelled.
Then there was a loud noise, which was the huge movement of the crossbows tearing the air. The burning asphalt barrels crossed the air at an astonishing speed and directly hit the Venetian sailboat's mast, which broke it. With a rumbling sound, half of the mast fell down and ignited the canvas and spread rapidly to the entire deck. In an instant, the terrible flames swallowed the small sailboat. Then the burned and screamed Venetian sailors screamed and abandoned their ships and jumped into the sea. The paddlers at the bottom had not yet realized what had been born and died directly. In order to prevent them from leaving their posts, everyone was fixed on the ship with chains. No one could think of this critical situation. They could only let them live and die together with the ship.
The Genoese sailors who witnessed all this were all happy. They had already had enough of the Venetians' unscrupulous tyranny on their territory and domineering on their seas. It was time to give them a reward! The huge flames quickly swallowed the Venetian sailboat's wooden structure and the flowing asphalt was mixed with some turbulent oil. The Venetian sailors could not extinguish it at all. The entire warship lost its combat power. They could only watch it sink into the sea. With just one counterattack, Christopher made the arrogant Venetian pay a huge price, which made Antonia Doria on the ship open his eyes wide and unable to believe it.
It is no wonder that she had heard a long time ago that Grandpa Christopher's eyes were lost when fighting the Venetians in her early years.
...
Compared to the cheering and joyful look of others, Christopher's face did not have any sign of joy at this moment. In comparison, he seemed to be worried about something.
Suddenly, the man yelled:
"Left full rudder, do evasive action!"
His voice was full of power, which almost made everyone's heart tremble, but when he gave orders, people couldn't help but obey and dared not make any violations.
Subconsciously, the sailor in charge of the helm controlled the warship and made emergency avoidance. Almost at the same time, the huge rock projected by the Venetian's catapult fell directly down and was only a short distance from the Genoese's hull. It was the opponent's counterattack! In just a moment, the opponent actually reacted. It seemed that he could not underestimate the other party - after all, this was their old enemy, who was also a mortal enemy.
Christopher, who sneered, was not panicked at all, at least it was still under his control.
"At the direction of 1 o'clock, two o'clock, bombard them! Sink the Venetians to feed the fish." He immediately estimated the direction of the enemy ship through ballistics, and then, Christopher's subordinates carried out his orders without any hesitation. For this man, everyone on the ship believed that as long as he was there, they could turn it around! After all, the adult they followed had extremely high prestige in the Genoese stronghold of Cafa.
"Boom--" I heard that the crossbows on the Genoese ship once again fired dangerous asphalt barrels, and struck the Venetian sailboat with a blazing flame.
But seeing the fire rushing into the sky, the Venetian, who was already full of confidence, was dazzled and felt like he was in an ambush and suddenly became confused.
"We encountered an ambush, we encountered an ambush! Ask for support, ask for support!"
The small sailboat that was first shot was almost disintegrated, and the disconnected ship gradually sank into the bottom of the sea. The seamen on the ship called for help in horror. However, the storm and rain at the sea became increasingly surging, and the clouds were densely covered in the sky, so that the Venetians could not see the people who fell into the water at all, and no ship dared to approach there, because no one wanted to die, and they were always wary of possible attacks.
On the other side, sitting on the relatively safe flagship, the young Baron Wenier looked at the scene in front of him and his eyes widened and his eyes were panicked.
Damn it! How could this happen? We obviously have absolute advantages. Could it be that they had ambushed in advance?
While ordering his subordinates to fight back, looking at Ranieri Dandoro who was pursuing, Venier said with a gloomy face: "Granel Ranieri, we have lost two ships. If we continue like this, we will not only not get what we want but will lose more."
Venier, who had no support to break up with the Genoese, wanted to persuade Ranieri Dandoro, who was determined to give up, but he didn't know that this setback was not enough to make him retreat.
Ranieridandoro said coldly: "I just lost two small boats. What are you afraid of? The Genoese are just bluffing and they have no ambush at all." As the son of Enrikdandoro, this war-torn man saw through it at a glance. Although the other party's surprise attack just now was amazing, it was just a means of familiarity with the situation of the Black Sea. It was easy to intimidate others by relying on these things, but it was a delusion to scare him.
He immediately interrupted Senvenier's persuasion beside him, and Ranieridandoro immediately ordered the flag-holder beside him to say, "Let the second and third teams continue to advance as planned and pay attention to avoid it." While making such an order, Ranieri also ordered the scatterer on his flagship to continue to aim at the enemy ship to shoot in an attempt to hinder the Genoa firepower output. Of course, Ranieridandoro didn't care at all if it could sink the other party, because he would rather the people on the ship be buried in the belly of the fish than to fall into the hands of the Greeks.
