Chapter 101 Aragonese

It was cloudy, and it started to wind, and then it started to rain.

There was only an empty plain around, and there was no place to hide, so Roger and his party could only bury their heads in the rain.

Gradually the rain stopped. Roger thought that it was already afternoon when he saw a roaring river.

There is a spacious bridge on the river, made of bricks and stones, and it remains unmoved in the turbulent water flow.

Victor introduced: "This is the masterpiece left by the Romans.

"It is said that Caesar personally led the army and fought a decisive battle with Pompeii's Spanish Legion.

"Because of heavy rain, the water of the Segray River surged, destroying the two temporary bridges that Caesar built, causing Caesar's army to be trapped on the bank of the river and almost starved to death.

"So later the Romans built the bridge very strong."

Roger believed in the Romans' construction technology, and he believed that in a thousand years, the bridge would still stand on the river.

Victor pointed to the mountain to the north and said, "From here we are going to turn north."

Roger did not leave immediately. He was looking at the small hills on the other side of the river. The hills were not big, about one hundred meters high, and the top was flattened and a stone fortress was built.

Roger saw many figures under the hill, looking like small black dots.

There is a small black dot that keeps growing, and it is a soldier riding a horse.

The soldiers ran to the bridge and declared to Roger and his gang:

"In front is the residence of His Majesty Alfonso, the king of the United Kingdom of Aragon and Naval. Who came and what he intended?"

Victor advised Roger:

"Sir, His Majesty Alfonso is also what we plan to visit. Next we have a while to pass through his territory."

So Roger said to the soldier:

"Please inform His Majesty Alfonso that Roger, Earl of Sicily, came to visit."

The soldier saluted and said, "Please follow me."

Roger and his party crossed the bridge under the leadership of the soldiers.

Roger saw a guard post built on the hilly crossing, and soldiers holding spears in hand, carrying javelins on guard, preventing the Arabs from coming out in the fortress on the hill.

Roger saw that these soldiers didn't even have leather armor on them, they were wearing cloth robes and shields, but their faces were full of murderous aura, and it was obvious that they were not easy to mess with.

In Roger's impression, javelin soldiers were just farmers equipped with short spears to throw. After a little training, they were just a little better than the rabble that broke out at one touch.

But these tough and simple-equipped soldiers in front of him subverted his common sense.

So Roger asked the soldiers leading the way: "Are your javelin soldiers so fierce?"

The soldiers proudly replied: "They are not ordinary javelin soldiers. They are all famous 'raiders' and all elite."

They continued to move forward and Roger saw a team of crossbowmen training.

These crossbow soldiers were equipped with cross-shaped military crossbows, and they were also just cloth shirts and did not wear armor.

The crossbowmen shot at the target for a round, but their results were bleak, so some people took out their flying knives and threw them out, and actually hit the target.

The soldier leading the way shook his head, not even interested in introducing it.

Going further, Roger and his team met a team of cavalry.

The cavalry were wearing leather armor, one hand with a leather shield, the other hand with a short javelin, and a sword tied around their waists.

These cavalrymen rode their horses, coming and going like the wind, extremely flexible.

Suddenly they gathered together, and after a shout, they threw the javelin out, tying the training target like a hedgehog.

Suddenly they dispersed again, each drawing out his sword, and wielding his way to the imaginary enemy.

The soldiers leading the way were proud again, and he said: "Our invincible javes."

"Invincible?" Danny interrupted dissatisfiedly, "It's exaggerating. I don't believe they can block the cavalry's lance charge."

"You don't underestimate them, sir. The horses of these javelin cavalry are light and run very quickly.

"The chain armor cavalry equipped with heavy chain armor and rifles cannot catch up with them.

"If the chain armored cavalry's cavalry's spear is not stabbed, it becomes a decoration.

"And the javelins of the Javelin Cavalry can easily penetrate chain mail.

"If you fight well, the Javelin Cavalry can destroy all the chain armored cavalry that can't fight back.

"And if they encounter light troops without armor, they will use swords to deal with each other."

Roger praised: "It sounds good, and leather armor, leather shields, and short spears are not expensive, and they are suitable for a lot of equipment."

He asked, "How did you come up with this tactic?"

The soldier was praised but looked helpless.

"We thought of it, we learned from the enemy's javes, and were forced out by the Arab desert cavalry.

"I just said that the Chain Armor Cavalry could not defeat them, it was really not a brag.

"Many of our chain armored cavalry died in the hands of those desert cavalry who were suffering from plague."

Roger and his team walked all the way to the station of a wooden wall.

The soldiers and the guards guards met the order, and the guards opened the door.

After entering the station, Roger saw rows of neatly arranged tents.

On the corner of the station, there were also carpenters who were building siege tools, while blacksmiths were repairing weapons and armor.

Roger followed him to the largest tent in the middle of the station, and the guards in front of the door stopped them.

The soldier informed the situation and a guard went in to report.

The guards then came out to invite Roger in.

Roger asked the soldiers to arrange for his men to rest, and walked in with Danny and Victor.

A fire broke out in the tent.

On the main seat of a long wooden table, a middle-aged man with thick eyebrows, deep eye sockets and a black beard.

He wore a long-sleeved chain mail with a hood, a slap blouse with an emblem on the outside, and a golden crown on his head.

A few jazz dressed in officers were sitting next to the wooden table.

"Welcome, Lord Roger, Earl of Sicily, I heard that you and Elvira are engaged.

“I just married Alfonso VI’s eldest daughter Uraka last year, so we are relatives.

"Come on, have a drink together."

Roger immediately understood that the person in front of him was his competitor.

He regrets it now, he shouldn't have come.

He was worried that the other party would attack him in order to reduce a competitor.

But since the other party is polite, he naturally won't be rude.

"His Majesty Alfonso, the King of the United Kingdom of Aragon and Naval, thank you for your invitation."

Roger sat down and the waiter brought him wine.

Roger thought to himself that Alfonso was fighting and he suddenly visited again, and the possibility of the other party preparing poisoned wine was extremely small.

What's more, this is the other party's territory. As long as the other party does not have the face of the king, and ignores the pope's metaphor that prohibits Christians from killing each other, killing himself is just a matter of one sentence.

So there should be no problem with this glass of wine.

On the contrary, Roger thought that if he didn't dare to drink this glass of wine, he would be ridiculed by the other party.

It may even be that the other party is not given to the other party, and the other party is attacked on the grounds of being insulted.

So he doesn't need to, and he must not retreat.

Roger picked up the wine and paid tribute to Alfonso.

Then he drank it all without hesitation.

Alfonso admired Roger's pleasure very much.

There is no problem with the wine.

Roger calmed down.

He thought, it seemed that Alfonso had chosen to compete in a healthy way.

Alfonso talked to Roger for a few family conversations, and then he became interested in Roger's warriors.

"You Sicilian knights have good equipment. There is no scratch on this chain mail. Have you never fought a war?"

Roger sounded harshly, and he felt that this was a provocation and he could not tolerate it.

If this is allowed to spread, people on the Iberian Peninsula would think that the Sicilians are all young birds who cannot fight.

These Iberians who have been through hundreds of years of war, born, grown up, and died in wars, will not accept a man who cannot fight to rule them.

Although the Sicily soldiers did not experience much war, this cannot be said.

Such remarks would have a great impact on his plan to compete for the throne.

Leon and the king of the United Kingdom of Castilla, Alfonso VI, the leader of the Restoration Movement, probably would not choose such a successor.

So Roger counterattacked: "We have a lot of money, so when there are scratches on the chain mail, they will change to a new one.

"I think your majesty's elite seem to have not enough armor. Why don't I give you a few sets of old armor for us."

Roger stared at Alfonso.
