Chapter 231 Varangian Guard

Roger heard the horn of the army.

He saw a group of guards in crimson dresses rushed out from the Great Palace to the east, like a city gate.

These people are tall, holding long-handled Viking tomahawks in their hands, and do not look like Eastern Romans.

As soon as they rushed into Augustus Square, they waved their battle axe and caused a bloody storm.

Roger killed everyone when he saw them, regardless of whether the other party was a poor man or a thug.

Wait for them to get closer.

Roger saw that under their crimson outfit, there were heavy full-body chain armor.

They wore round iron helmets on their heads, iron handguards on their arms, and iron shin guards on their calfs.

They were equipped with the Romfaya sword, which was standard for the Eastern Roman army.

Some people also carry zither-shaped shields that are also standard for Eastern Roman soldiers.

But Roger didn't see any of them, using the sword and shield.

They just slashed with battle axe.

Rinaldi shouted: "It's the Varangi Guard!"

Roger had learned about this guard in the information he had collected before.

He knew that this was the Royal Guard of the Eastern Roman Empire, a heavy infantry unit.

Their members were all from the Slavic region, from the Vikings in Nordic and England, or from Normans who were of the same clan as the Vikings.

Roger felt that since it might have been a family 500 years ago, these Varangi should not cause any danger to him.

So he asked Rinaldi in a relaxed tone:

"Why are they called Valangi Guards? Is 'Varani' meaning?"

Rinaldi replied: “‘Valangi’ means ‘oath’.

"The Varangi Guard is a group that swears allegiance to the Emperor, abides by the Emperor's regulations, and divides the interests equally.

"But now, the Eastern Romans call all Nordics 'Varangi'."

When Roger looked back on the square, whether it was the civilians or the thugs, they were trying hard to avoid these Varangi.

He saw that no one had deliberately driven away the civilians, and they were also running away.

But when these thugs escape, they will attack those who stop them from running away.

The chaotic square seemed even more chaotic.

At this time, Roger noticed that another army rushed over from the direction of Kinmen to the west.

This is a team of cavalrymen, carrying compound bows on their bodies and small round shields tied to their arms.

The archers wore conspicuous red uniforms and Persian, cucumber-like hats.

Rinaldi shouted, "Vadarity, they are Vadarity cavalry!"

Roger saw that these archers, known as Vadarita, pulled out whips and sticks from their waists, and whipped the rioters and drove them away.

On the south, at the north gate of the large racing arena, a small team of cavalry slowly walked out.

Roger noticed that the cavalry team was not large.

But they lined up neatly, cooperated with each other and moved forward together.

Obviously these people have received rigorous training and have a strong collective consciousness.

Roger saw that they were holding an amazingly long rifle in their hands, which looked like a boat oar.

They had small round shields tied to their hands like archers.

These cavalry wore round iron helmets with independent neck protection, with iron armor on their bodies, and iron handguards and shin guards on their forearms and calves.

Inside the armor, they were wearing full-body chain mail to protect all exposed parts of their bodies.

This made them look a little bloated.

Roger noticed that even their horses were covered in armor, with only their lips, eyes, ears, four calves and tails exposed.

Rinaldi shouted again: "Eastern Roman Armored Paladin!"

Seeing that these armored paladins were not fast, Roger just advanced slowly, and at the same time, he used his extremely long spear to drive away the poor and thugs running everywhere.

Roger didn't know whether they did it on purpose or it was too heavy to run.

At this time, Roger suddenly felt a chill and rushed up along his spine.

His hair was standing up all over his body, and a thin layer of sweat oozed out of his back.

Roger could not describe this feeling, he only knew that he felt murderous intent.

During the previous life-and-death battles, Roger somehow understood this skill.

He has no way to explain this phenomenon with science.

But he believed in this feeling.

He knew the danger was nearby.

Roger looked around.

The civilians and thugs who were running around tried their best to avoid their isolated islands.

Obviously, these people do not threaten them.

So Roger focused on the troops surrounding them from three sides.

He first focused on the armored paladins coming from the south.

Although these heavy cavalry are not large in number, they are a major threat to their infantrymen.

Roger doesn't think that the sword in his hand can block these rhino-like opponents.

But he saw that the armored paladins were still there, driving away the rioters running everywhere.

Roger felt that they were cleaning the field more like they were fighting.

He felt that it might not be them.

Roger then turned his attention to the west.

He was also very alert to the archers.

The compound bows of these people are a great threat to those who do not have shields.

Roger regretted not bringing the shield, but he also knew that it was unrealistic.

When we met, we used the sword for etiquette and said that what does it mean to bring a shield?

Now they are wearing chain mail inside.

However, these compound bows also have certain armor-piercing ability when shooting at close range.

What's more, the other party's horse can hit you.

Moreover, Roger was worried that even if the other party didn't make a tough guy, they might suddenly shoot a cold arrow in such a chaotic occasion.

That would be enough to kill a knight.

However, Roger looked at those Vadarita, but until now they had not drawn out their weapons or took down the compound bow on their backs.

Like riot police, they were just driving civilians with whips and sticks and letting them leave the square.

Roger didn't see them killing.

He felt that these people might not be a threat either.

So Roger turned his attention to the east again.

He looked at those "distant relatives" who had the same genes as him.

He saw that, led by a big man with gold inlay on the hilt of the sword, these Valangi rushed towards him almost in a straight line.

They disdained the poor and thugs scattered beside them and behind them.

So Roger understood that the target of these Valangi was not the rioters, but his own group of people.

Roger saw Varangi's number of people far greater than his own group.

He felt that he had no chance of winning against these heavy infantry soldiers holding two-handed axes.

So Roger ordered: "Retreat!"

However, he didn't have many choices, and he didn't believe in the other two cavalry units.
