Chapter 348 Bread and Salt(1/2)

Roger thought to himself that Jerusalem is probably one of the most severe conflicts in the world.

Christians from afar, Jews from the locals, and Mullins, who belong to two mutually hostile denominations.

Everyone wants this holy city.

If you want to gain a foothold here, force is necessary.

But the fundamental reason for force is human.

Although Christian warriors are all elite and far better than locals, a small number of people is always a flaw.

Roger remembered that Rolo had introduced that they had adopted the practice of controlling the vassal tribes and using the Sarasen or Turks in those tribes as auxiliary forces to supplement the combat power of Christians.

But why did they not use these, like sand, count them, the Bedouin people who were fierce, brave, and tenacious in combat?

Roger thought, perhaps it was because the Bedouin people did not obey any regime, did not recognize any political system, and did not have the concept of discipline, order and authority.

Such people cannot be enslaved.

Therefore, in the minds of the crusaders, these people are "worthless".

But the Bedouin people can actually be organized, but they cannot use slavery.

Roger thought of watching a movie in his previous life: "Lawrence of Arabia".

He felt that maybe he could learn from Lawrence's approach.

He thought that even if he failed, it would be nothing, it was nothing but some "worthless" prisoners.

So Roger ordered the guards to untie the captives' ropes.

He took out his water bag and handed it to a Bedouin.

The man's lips were already dry and cracked, and all of them were like this.

Obviously, after the fierce battle, the crusaders did not drink water for these prisoners.

The Bedouin took the water bag and took a sip.

Then, although his companions were as thirsty as him, he did not hand the water bag to his companions, but returned it to Roger.

The thirsty companion around the man did not make any moves to ask for water capsules, and did not even make a statement, but just watched silently.

Roger asked someone to get salt and bread.

He handed the water bag to the Bedouin who was watching silently.

The man took it, drank the water happily, and then returned the water bag directly to Roger.

Roger smiled and gave the Bedouin prisoners one by one.

All the prisoners accepted Roger's water, and none of them handed the water to their thirsty companions beside them.

Because water represents life, this is the iron law in the desert and the rules passed down from ancient times by the Bedouin people.

The lives of these captives are in Roger's hands. The people who are given water by Roger means that they are given life by Roger and they will not be killed by Roger.

But they have no right to hand the water to their companions because they are not qualified to replace Roger and decide whether their companions can survive.

Bread and salt were brought over.

Roger distributed one by one to let the prisoners eat.

The captured Bedouin ate with bread and salt.

So Roger patted the other person on the shoulder and said, "Friend, you are free, go, go wherever you want."

He did this one by one until all the Bedouin captives were released.

The released Bedouin did not leave immediately, they saluted Roger, and one of them said:

“I, Sticha, pay tribute to you not because you free us, but because you respect the ancient traditions of our Bedouin people.

“You are the first Christian leader I know to respect our traditions.

"Since you give us bread and salt and call us friends, we want to know what you call it."

"Roger Ultraville."

So the Bedouin saluted again, and before they left, they said:

"Roger, you defeated us and followed our traditions, so now you are our friend."

When the Bedouin people left, the broken-mouthed crusader couldn't help but say:

"Sir, please be honest, I think you are doing something stupid."

Roger wasn't sure if he had done something stupid, but he didn't lose much anyway.

He smiled and said, "At least I've given you free, now you can go to the banquet."

So the soldier ran happily to the open space in front of the camp.

There, the soldiers had lit dozens of bonfires.

All the bonfires were roasted with cows, sheep, camels, and the fragrance filled the entire top of Gushan Mountain.

Roger had already permitted the warriors tonight that everyone could eat meat with their stomachs open to eat.

If you are even happy, you can eat half of it and vomit half of it.

Anyway, the previous massacres and subsequent battles, the many livestock killed will be a waste not to be eaten.

In this hot weather, they can't be preserved for a few days.

But even if it is wasted, Roger will not hand them over to Carac Castle, because it has nothing to do with them.

The next morning, Roger sent a messenger early in the morning.

The messenger would go straight to Jerusalem without stopping, inform Adelaide of the news of Roger's victory, and inform him of the sentiment of experienced shepherds.

Roger looked at the cattle, sheep and camels all over the mountains, all of which were his trophy.

Some of them must be distributed to the crusaders who participated in the war, and some were handed over to the relatives of the deceased as pensions.

But even after deducting these, the remaining number of livestock is still surprisingly large.

Of course, this number was not as large as we had known before, because in the final pursuit of the enemy's defeated soldiers, a large number of camels fled with their masters.

At that time, Roger had no one to care about them at all, so he could only let them leave.

Fortunately, most of the camels that died in the battle remained, and there were nearly 100,000 cattle and sheep.

However, Roger is all professional soldiers, and no one knows how to livestock.

To bring such a huge herd back, Roger had a headache than winning the battle, so he had to turn to Jerusalem for help.

At this time, Odin came to report: "Sir, one of the thirteen seriously injured people died last night.

"Hugo and Gfrey, and several wounded people woke up, but the situation was not optimistic. Do you want to meet them?"

So Roger followed Odin to the wounded's tent.

The wounded who woke up were still lying down, and no one could even sit up.

Some people used cloth strips stained with water to moisten the injured's lips, but there were no more treatment methods other than that.

Roger knew that there was a shortage of medical treatment and medicine, and even in Karak Castle, there was a lack of means to treat them.

Only available in Jerusalem, where hospitals are available.

The hospital monks' association, which was born in the Hospital Knights, was a member of the Baptist Church of St. John, and was very experienced in treating the wounded.

There are experienced healthcare workers and enough medicines there that may save their lives.

But these people were so seriously injured that they might not be able to withstand the bumps of the return journey.

Roger handed over the decision to the injured person himself.

He knelt on one knee, leaned close to Hugo's ear, and asked softly:

"You may die on the way back, and you may die if you stay here, tell me your decision."

Hugo replied: "It is my honor to die on the same land as Jesus."

Roger thought, you can't do it if Jesus can be resurrected.

But of course he wouldn't say that.

He ordered all the crusaders who could still fight to stay, guard the herds, and wait for the arrival of the livestock to return to Jerusalem together.

And he himself, with all the Sicilians, and those who were slightly injured and seriously injured, set off for a trip immediately.

So, two days later, Roger once again saw the walls of Jerusalem.

Two seriously injured people died on the way.

He personally sent the remaining 10 seriously injured people to the hospital monks' association.

However, the president of the Monks' Association regretfully told Roger: "Sorry, sir, we can't accept so many wounded people."

Roger was furious: "What a joke, there are only 10 people. How could you not even let go of 10 people in your place? Do you think I am blind?!"

The monk president sighed and said, "There is a place, the problem is that we don't have enough medicine."
