Chapter 38

The next morning, Roger was notified that Baldwin invited him to the living room for breakfast.

So Roger came to the living room where he met Baldwin last night.

The second floor reception room has been decorated into a small dining room.

Perhaps because of insufficient ingredients, there is no luxurious food on the table, just some ordinary bread, rice, with dates and wine.

King Baldwin was already sitting in the main seat and was having a meal.

He ate a mix of Egyptian-style cuisine - kushari.

That's made by mixing macaroni, noodles, rice and lentils, and spreading with olive fried onions.

When Baldwin saw Roger in, he naturally asked Roger to take his seat as his father spoke to his son.

Roger saluted obediently.

He walked forward and kept apologizing for his lateness.

Baldwin mumbled, "It's okay, I often slept until noon at your age."

Roger had a smile on his face, followed Baldwin's topic and said some warm homely words.

Then when he walked one step away from Baldwin.

Suddenly, he drew his sword.

The "Sword of the Conqueror" hit Baldwin's heart.

The tip of the sword cut through Baldwin's purple home robe and pointed it on the other party's chest.

The sharp blade slashed the skin of Baldwin's chest, and blood flowed out, dyeing an ugly black shadow on the purple robe.

The captain of the guard standing behind Baldwin obviously did not expect this to happen, and he panickedly wanted to draw his sword.

The attendant serving beside him was as surprised as if he had been hit by Medusa's curse and stood still.

Roger's face changed from false warmth to real coldness.

He sternly said, "No one is allowed to move, or I will kill him!"

Roger's words were like a seal, freezing the action of the captain of the guard drawing the sword.

The attendant began to tremble involuntarily, and the dishes in the tray in his hand were "rattled".

The person involved, Baldwin, seemed as if nothing had happened. He continued to chew while muttering and giving orders:

"Everything is out. My son and I have something to talk about, and I don't want to hear anyone gossiping."

After Baldwin finished speaking, he scooped another spoonful of rice and put it in his mouth.

The black shadow on his chest was still expanding.

However, his expression was not at all panic, he was calm and composed,

Roger didn't seem to feel pain at all when he saw Baldwin, as if he wasn't the one who was bleeding.

The captain of the guard hesitated, as if he didn't know whether he should obey Baldwin's orders.

Baldwin said impatiently: "As a king, I don't like repeating my commands!"

So the captain of the guard put down his hand holding the sword handle and dragged the servant who was still trembling involuntarily and left the room.

Roger looked at Baldwin, who was still eating breakfast calmly, and was a little impressed.

He thought that it was impossible for ordinary people to be able to continue eating breakfast like nothing happened when someone was pointing his sword at his chest and was bleeding.

After waiting for the only two left in the room, Roger and Baldwin.

Roger questioned: "Give me a reason."

Baldwin wiped his mouth with a napkin, and he said:

“It’s all about defeating the Egyptians.

“I think it is not enough to rely on the current strength, and we must arm everyone with faith.

"And in a short time, only Patriarch Anurf can do this.

“And his condition is: your mother must be left as the queen.

“He is not an exaggeration.

"Because, as long as your mother is still in power, Anurf is guilty, and even if he returns, he does not have enough prestige to call on everyone.

"I promised him."

Roger sneered and said, "So you betrayed my mother, but you still say you love her."

Baldwin raised his chest and let the sharp sword tips cut through more of his skin.

He stared at Roger with bright eyes and said:

“I really love Adelaide.

"I did this just a strategy, Adelaide's departure was only temporary.

"When I defeat the Egyptians, I will bring her back and continue to let her be my queen."

Roger sneered, "Can Anurf agree then?"

Baldwin's mouth raised slightly, he said:

"When I defeat the Egyptians and save Jerusalem, my prestige will not be controlled by Anurf, and he will not refuse to agree at that time.

"I can even let him go back wherever he comes from."

Roger asked again: "Then your ex-wife, no, your current wife, Armenian princess arda, are you going to let her come from and go back?"

Baldwin said solemnly: "In fact, I didn't send anyone to pick her up at all.

"When I beat the Egyptian, I will officially announce my divorce from her and then marry Adelaide."

Roger said in a sarcastic tone: "How despicable the person in front of me is.

“He regards commitment as a joke and treats others as pawns.

"I guess, when the tip of my sword leaves this man's chest, he will immediately turn back.

"Baldwin, you said, how should I believe such a person?"

Baldwin said calmly: "It is really difficult for people to trust each other when they get along with each other.

“Roger, even though you don’t trust me, I still want to say, I really want to treat you as my son.

"Tell me, what should I do to make you believe it?"

Roger said: "I want you to write an order right now, let my mother leave Karak Castle, and sign your name and stamp your seal."

Baldwin shook his head and refused.

Roger sneered and threatened: "I'm afraid you have no choice."

Baldwin's face was not as panic as an ordinary person after being coerced.

He said: "Roger, you are not chosen."

Roger's face sterned, and he said, "The hilt of the sword is in my hand."

Baldwin was not afraid, and he said confidently: "But you dare not stab.

“For it is the king of Jerusalem before you.

"If you kill me, you are the enemy of the entire Christian world.

"You can't even leave the military camp of Arish."

Roger said proudly: "We Sicilian Normans are never afraid of any threats.

"As for this place, I will take my men out and see who dares to stop me?"

Baldwin raised his lips and said sarcastically, "Are you sure that your men who believe in Christ will still obey your commands?"

Roger said confidently: "I treat my subordinates as my brothers and feet, and they treat me as my heart."

Baldwin nodded and exclaimed: "I appreciate your confidence, and I also envy you for having such a subordinate.

"I would have liked my subordinates who followed my orders like this."

Roger sneered: "You use my mother, Anurf, and anyone you can use.

"How can they truly obey you if you treat others as dogs, horses and grass?

"Stop talking nonsense, write the order quickly."

Baldwin nodded and said, “You are right, I am indeed used to using others.

"Because I am the king, most of the people around me approach me with purpose.

"They deceived me and fooled me in order to achieve their goals, and they were not trustworthy.

“So I don’t trust others easily, and I don’t need to trust others either.

“I just need to make sure they listen to me and do things for me.

“For this, I use various means to control and use them.

“Roger, being a king is sometimes really tiring.

“So I also hope to have a warm family and a family that can trust each other.

"Just now, I really want to treat you as my son, and I really want you to treat me as my father."

The sword in Roger's hand trembled, interrupting Baldwin's sensationality.

The shadow on Baldwin's purple robe expanded a little more.
