Chapter 405, Consul

The distance between Istanbul is a little farther, and they have no telegrams, so His Majesty Selim III received the news that the invincible Turkish army had recovered Tripoli a little later than that of continental countries such as France. However, when the expeditionary force was sent, it was already determined that once Tripoli was captured, who would be handed over to rule. Therefore, the Turks' actions were actually faster than the French and the Holy See.

However, the Turks did not take advantage of this time to engage in any unethical activities. Before sending troops, everyone had already discussed that the issue of land allocation and church site selection must be finally determined until the French consul and the people from the Holy See arrived.

Of course, there are still many benefits to taking the lead. For example, when it comes to the distribution of wealth, you can still take advantage of it.

So when Victor arrived in Tripoli, the Turks had basically registered the situation of the manor here. There are two main things left: the first is to identify believers and the second is to allocate land.

The matter of identifying believers should have been very simple, because every Christian slave should theoretically have a list. However, the Tripoli fire burned a lot of things, including the list and other things. So many times, whether a person is a Christian or not really becomes a Schrödinger question.

So, when Victor saw the "list of Christian slaves" provided to him by the Turks, he immediately discovered a problem. That is, the number of Christians on the list seemed to be a little too small.

"Dear Pasha, is there an original list?" Victor asked.

"Some, but written in Turkish," replied the new Tripoli Pasha, who was named Ben Harden. "You need to look at the original list?"

Victor nodded and said, "Yes, Pasha. This is the sacred mission given to me by the first rule of France and the Emperor of the Roman Empire. I must be more serious."

So Benhardenpasha asked someone to bring the original document.

Victor asked, "Dear Pasha, can I bring these things back and study them?"

"No problem. There is no problem at all. You can study it as long as you want. We are close allies." Ben Harden Pasha replied.

So Victor brought the original list back and compared it with the current list. He found that almost as long as the names on the list he got at the beginning could be found on the original list. However, there are many names on the original list that cannot be found in the current "Christian Slave List".

The next morning, Victor didn't even eat breakfast, so he came to the door and asked to see Ben Hardenpasha. Seeing that he was a French consul, the servant dared not to report, so he asked Victor to drink coffee in the vestibule and quickly went in to report.

Benharden Pasha was having breakfast at this time. Speaking of which, this Pasha was a tough guy. No matter who he met, as long as he was a level younger than him, he could take care of it. No matter if you are a general and nobleman, when he met, he would show his face to others, and he would not care whether he could live on his face. Even if the general and nobleman were like this, those who were in charge of his work would naturally drink and scold him. At the least, they would kick him, and at the worst, they would be held up, and there would be no need to ask.

The servant who went in and informed him came inside, but saw Ben Harden Pasha having a meal, and remembered the rules he had set for everyone when he took office. One of them was that when he was eating, no matter what he was doing, he could not disturb him. As the saying goes, the true god is the most important thing, eating is important.

So the slave did not dare to go forward, but dared to stand aside from afar and wait.

But Ben Hardenpasha turned his eyes, but happened to see the slave, and asked, "What's the matter?"

After hearing this, the slave hurried forward to report: "Report to Pasha, a guest wants to see you..."

Before he finished speaking, he heard a slap, and five finger marks appeared on the servant's face. Then he heard Ben Hardenpasha cursing, "Bastard! What did I tell you at the beginning! No matter what guests come, you are not allowed to go back and forth. You have no ears, don't hear it?" As he said, he raised his legs and kicked the servant to the ground.

Before Benharden Pasha was angry, he went to the shelf by the table to get his whip. Seeing that the situation was not good, the slave hurriedly said, "The noble Pasha, this guest is unique. It is very important."

Benharden Pasha became more and more angry and shouted, "He is important, don't I? No matter who he is, is there anyone here more important than me?"

The servant said quickly, "It is Mr. Treville, the Consul of France."

After hearing this, Benhard Pasha suddenly became halfway and was stunned for a long time. After thinking for the first time, he suddenly got up, and with a bang, five more finger marks were added to the other side of the slave's face; then Benhard Pasha jumped up and cursed: "Bastard! Who am I supposed to be? It turns out to be a Frenchman! The Frenchman is here, why didn't he come back early and ask him to wait outside for the past half day?"

The slave said, "I was rushing up and down, but I saw Pasha and you were having a meal, so I waited in the corridor."

Ben Harden Pasha heard this and raised his legs and kicked him again, saying, "No other guests are allowed to return. The French are coming. There are business affairs about the friendship between the two countries. Why do you want him to wait outside? A fool! Why don't you invite him in now!"

The servant ran out quickly and pulled Victor into the living room.

The two sat in the living room, and Ben Harden Pasha asked, "I wonder what happened to the Consul in the consul?"

Victor said: "I looked at the original list yesterday, and there were some traces of burning on this list. I think some lists were burned when the fire in Tripoli were burned. According to general principles, there must be many Christian slaves in the fire. So the list of Christian slaves you gave me has fewer names than this one, which is understandable. But I think there will always be some names on the new list on the list that were burned. In other words, some names in the new list should not be in these original lists. So I think there may be some errors or omissions in the counting of Christian slaves. I strongly demand that among all slaves, another comprehensive and blind spot investigation will be carried out so that no one who deserves freedom will continue to suffer a unfortunate fate."

Benhardenpasha heard this and said, "Ah, there is something like this? This must be the damn slaves below who are lazy and treacherous. If the consul had not loved the people as much as his son, and was as careful as silk, and had been fooled by them. Fortunately, the slaves are still there, and I immediately let the guys below check it out. What do you think?"
