Chapter 5 Back to school during winter vacation
January 28th was the day to return to school to receive the score report. Jiang Nan got up early and had breakfast with his parents.
Just after breakfast, Wang Sihai, Xu Xiaofen and Jin Beibei arrived at the door of their house, so Jiang Nan hurriedly put on his coat and went out with them.
Jin Beibei was chattering along the way, talking about how her parents would take her to the county to buy New Year clothes a few years ago.
Xu Xiaofen chatted with her every word.
Jiang Nan was a little curious and excited about going to school and didn't talk much along the way.
Wang Sihai remained silent, obviously worried about his own performance.
"Jiangnan, why don't you say anything? Did you fail the test this time?" Jin Beibei asked carelessly, not caring whether others were worried or not.
"You also know that I don't care that much about my grades. If I don't do well, I'll try harder next time." Jiang Nan glanced at her and said lightly.
"That's right. Let's not talk about the exam. I will go to the county in a few days. Will you go to your home?" Jin Beibei asked expectantly.
Xu Xiaofen also looked at Jiang Nan expectantly.
"If our parents don't go, I'll go by myself if I want to." Jiang Nan thought for a while and said.
Jiang Nan really planned to visit the county seat. After all, he also wanted to see what the county seat was like in 1996. Although he was admitted to the County No. 1 Middle School in his previous life, the County No. 1 Middle School moved to the suburbs when he was in high school.
So he doesn't go there much in the county.
"Go by yourself? How can you go by yourself?" Jin Beibei said again.
"Let's go by bus, how about walking?" Jiang Nan's thoughts were interrupted and he said angrily.
"Oh. It doesn't seem impossible to go by yourself." Jin Beibei didn't care, thinking about what Jiang Nan said.
The second grade of junior high school is on the second floor, classes one, two and three are on the left side of the stairs, and classes four and five are on the right.
Jin Beibei is in Class 1, Wang Sihai is in Class 3, and Xu Xiaofen and Jiang Nan are in Class 5.
When they got to the second floor, Jiang Nan said to Wang Sihai and Jin Beibei, "Would you like to go back together after school?"
Wang Sihai shook his head: "Looking at the situation, I guess I have to play outside for a while. You guys should go back first."
Jin Beibei said: "I would like to go back with you, but your class teacher is too boring. If you don't tell me, I won't be able to get out of school for an hour. I'm afraid I won't be able to wait."
Jiang Nan nodded and said, "Let's talk about it then."
Jin Beibei nodded, turned around and left with Wang Sihai.
The head teacher Lu Zongren hadn't come yet, and the classroom was noisy. Everyone was chatting excitedly. When Jiang Nan and Xu Xiaofen came in, no one noticed.
Xu Xiaofen's seat was in the first row. After she sat down, she realized that Jiang Nan was still in front of the blackboard in a daze.
Jiang Nan really couldn't remember where his seat was or who his deskmate was, and he was looking confused at the moment.
He thought about it for a long time, but couldn't remember it, so he simply changed his mind and sat down next to Xu Xiaofen.
Xu Xiaofen saw Jiang Nan sitting next to her and looked at her strangely.
Jiang Nan pretended to be nonchalant and said calmly: "I was sitting here with you, and I offended my deskmate before, so I was afraid that he would beat me up if I went there."
Xu Xiaofen looked back at the last table in the classroom and asked strangely: "How can you have a deskmate?"
"Ah?" Jiang Nan then remembered that when he was in the second grade of junior high school, he was sitting in the last row of the classroom. There was an extra desk. Not only did he not have any deskmates, there was no one on either side of him.
"Haha, I'm talking about Li Jing in front of me." Jiang Nan said something casually and left with his schoolbag in his arms.
The desks in rural middle schools are for two people, and Jiang Nan has a large desk to himself, which is why he chose this position in the first place. After not coming here for a few days, a thin layer of dust has fallen on the black tabletop.
"I came so late and slept in? Look at the new napkins I bought. Do they smell good?" Li Jing looked back at Jiang Nan, took out a piece of tissue and handed it to Jiang Nan.
"No, I walk slowly on the road." Jiang Nan replied casually, took the napkin, wiped the table, and threw the paper into the trash can.
Li Jing was dumbfounded. It was a heart-to-heart that she had spent fifty cents on in the morning. She just wanted to give one to Jiang Nan and ask him if it smelled good.
"What's wrong, are you stupid?" Jiang Nan waved his hand in front of Li Jing.
"You are such a prodigal, you use such a good tissue to wipe the table." Li Jing's tablemate Zhu Lijun said angrily. After speaking, she took a brand new napkin and sniffed it, looking intoxicated.
Jiang Nan then remembered that this was 1996, and napkins were not that popular yet. They were only available in slightly higher-end restaurants. Napkins had just entered rural areas, and the price was indeed relatively expensive. A small pack of ten napkins cost fifty cents.
In my memory, only a few female classmates in the class would buy it, and even those who bought it would not be willing to use it.
"I'm really sorry, I thought you handed it to me to clean the table, hehe..." Jiang Nan scratched his head in embarrassment.
The head teacher Lu Zongren walked in, and the classroom suddenly became quiet.
Teacher Lu glanced at the whole class to confirm that no one was absent, and then said: "The first semester of the second grade of junior high school has passed like this. In general, most of the students have made positive progress this semester. There are three students in our class who are
I have the honor to join the Communist Youth League this semester..."
Teacher Lu was summarizing the study situation of this semester in a strict manner, and everyone was whispering to each other below. Jiang Nan was not interested in listening, and lowered his head quietly, thinking about the changes that his father's unit was about to face.
"Hey, Jiangnan, is that girl outside looking for you?" Li Jing turned around and whispered.
Jiang Nan looked out the window and saw Jin Beibei standing outside the window. When Jiang Nan looked over, he glanced at his wrist.
Jiang Nan glanced at Lao Lu on the podium and rolled his eyes again.
Jin Beibei gave a helpless expression and raised her eyes to the side.
Jiang Nan nodded and Jin Beibei left.
Li Jing watched the two people's performance throughout, and didn't react until they left, "What riddles are you doing?"
"We're not playing riddles, we're talking." Jiang Nan said confused.
"Can you understand each other?" Li Jing asked in surprise.
"Oh, she asked me how long it would take to finish. I said, I don't know, our teacher is very long-winded.
She said she sympathized, so she went back first, and I said okay. You see, it's that simple." Jiang Nan said.
"Wow, you really have a good understanding of each other, and the level of communication is quite deep." Li Jing said with an envious look on her face.
"That means they are more interested in calling each other," Zhu Lijun interjected.
"This does not mean that they called, it only means that they are very familiar with each other and have a tacit understanding." Li Jing argued.
The two idiots were arguing like they were talking in cross talk. Jiang Nan felt bored and stopped talking.
Teacher Lu spoke for a full hour. During this period, he praised the students who had made great progress in their studies, criticized the students who had fallen behind, and explained some things to pay attention to during the winter vacation. Then he distributed the report cards and announced the holiday.
After Lao Lu left, everyone dispersed without even having time to say hello to each other, and soon there was no one in the classroom.
Jiang Ruijin waited until everyone was almost gone, then walked to the back of the classroom and said to Jiang Nan: "Jiang Nan, did you go back to the countryside before the end of the year?"
Jiang Nan was stunned for a moment and then remembered that this thin boy was his distant cousin Jiang Ruijin. He glanced at a girl sitting in front of the classroom again. The girl smiled and nodded to him. That was Jiang Ruijin.
Twin sister Jiang Ruiyin.
Jiang Nan also smiled and nodded at her. Jiang Nan still had a particularly fond impression of these twin brothers and sisters.
When he was a child in the countryside, Jiang Nan was always chased by dogs. Jiang Ruijin always stepped forward and drove the dogs away with stones. He knew that Jiang Nan liked to eat lobsters, and he often took Jiang Nan to catch lobsters with a net bag.
The brother and sister went to elementary school in the countryside and came to the town in junior high school. In the second grade of junior high school, they were assigned to the same class as Jiang Nan, and their interactions with each other gradually increased.
"I'm not sure. I probably won't be able to go back until New Year's Eve." Jiang Nan thought for a moment before saying.
"Then if you go back years ago, remember to look for me. If you catch up with my uncle's Qingtang, I will catch a big tortoise and give it to you." Jiang Ruijin said with a smile.
"Okay, I will definitely look for you when I get back." Jiang Nan smiled and gave him a hammer.
Jiang Ruijin happily took his sister away.
After watching the two brothers and sisters leave, Jiang Nan saw that Xu Xiaofen was still waiting for him, so he picked up his schoolbag and walked towards her, and the two went home together.
"Jiangnan, where do you rank this time?" Xu Xiaofen asked on the way.
"Fifth, what about you?" Jiang Nan also asked.
"Eighth." Xu Xiaofen replied.
"We all work hard and strive to be admitted to the County No. 1 Middle School." Jiang Nan encouraged.
Xu Xiaofen's dull eyes flashed with surprise, and she replied with a smile: "Well, I will work hard."
"Jiangnan, I'm not good at physics, can you help me make up for it?" Xu Xiaofen said again.
"Well, no problem." Jiang Nan replied, but in his heart he was thinking about how to make some money during the winter vacation. He also wanted to make some money to visit the county town during the winter vacation.
The town is just one street, with the school at the east end and the supply and marketing cooperative at the west end, only seven or eight hundred meters apart. There are private houses on both sides of the road. Jiangnan saw that last year's Spring Festival couplets and the word "Fu" were still posted on the doors of every house, but they had faded.
Some of them have been blown away by the wind, leaving only a glue mark on the door.
