49. Tania and Benita (2.5k)

Although Hevin had prepared a room for Tanya, she did not choose to live here. Instead, she left every night and came back before Hala got up.

Tanya's sister Benita is waiting for her at home.

Tanya walked through a dilapidated neighborhood. Although the area where Hevin lived was not far away, the housing prices and consumption levels were completely different.

Near Hewen's home, there are high-end coffee shops, restaurants where she can spend a month's salary, and clothing stores with many beautiful dresses.

And here, there are many street stalls that are unhealthy and taste bad, and tailors with monotonous and fragile fabrics. Even newsboys will not appear in this place.

She stopped in front of a discarded book.

Tanya bent down, picked through a pile of tattered books, and finally found her target:

"Boss, how much does this cost?"

The person reading the books and periodicals was an old man with a straight nose. He didn’t even look at Tanya’s face, but just glanced at the thing in her hand:

"20p."

Tanya replied:

"It's too expensive. Even if it's brand new, it only costs 50 pence. In addition, this newspaper has expired. I can only pay ten pence at most."

The old man changed his sitting position and scratched his itch:

"Whether you like it or not, I'll sell it for 20 pence."

Tanya struggled, then she picked out a few pages from the newspaper in her hand and asked:

"If I just want these pages, can you sell them to me for ten pennies?"

The old man sighed:

"Fifteen pence, you can take it all. It won't be easy to sell the newspaper if it's opened."

Tanya hesitated before taking out the fifteen pence and handing it to the old man, then picked up the newspaper and turned around to leave.

The girl's heart is bleeding.

She had never spent a penny on such useless things, and fifteenpence had been a large sum of money to them before.

Although fifteen pence could only buy a decent lunch in a civilian neighborhood, if she made it herself, she and her sister could survive on this for three days.

However, after working as a servant for Hewen, Hewen provided three meals a day, and her current monthly salary was several times that of before, so she dared to spend money lavishly.

Tanya held the newspaper as carefully as she held a piece of gold, and hurriedly ran towards home.

Since I started working at Hewen's house, although the time I get off work every day is not certain, depending on whether Hewen is at home, my time is indeed more free than in my previous job.

When you work as a maid for a noble lady, you cannot leave the master's side at will, so after losing that job, Tanya was not too disappointed because she did not worry about leaving Benita at home alone.

Slums have always had a bad reputation, and they are indeed more chaotic than other neighborhoods.

However, although there are many poor people here, there is no shortage of good people. Because of this, although the law is difficult to enforce here, order still exists.

In this place, it is precisely because the law is difficult to control, so although there are many petty thefts, almost no one will take action against children, because there are children in every household.

Once someone does something that crosses the bottom line, they will receive a far more harsh and terrifying punishment than going to jail.

In addition to ordinary people in the neighborhood helping each other, the slums also have their own gangs.

Rat Hat Gang.

As the largest gang in the Forth City slums, they have a strong control over the area. It is said that Desiree, the founder of the Rat Hat Gang, was a knight who was born in the slums. Later, due to various reasons, he left

The Knights of England returned to the place of their birth.

Seeing that his former hometown was in chaos and full of crime, he couldn't help but want to change everything, but he knew very well that neither the Knights nor the police could save this place.

As long as classes exist and exploitation does not cease, ghettos are destined to be plagued by violence and crime.

So he chose to use gangs to govern this place. His gang would not restrict crime, but would not tolerate behavior that violated morality.

Theft, robbery, selling counterfeit goods, cheating, fighting, and even murder are all common here.

But if anyone attacks a helpless and weak person, his limbs will be cut off the next day and thrown into the sewer to be eaten by rats.

The Knights once thought of encircling them, but as a former knight, the leader of the Rat Hat Gang was very familiar with their tactics and bottom line, which made the previous deputy leader of the Knights of Forth City feel helpless.

However, it is undeniable that under the rule of the Desire Rat Hat Gang, although crime has not decreased much, powerless civilians do not have to worry about being killed in the streets for no reason.

Therefore, most residents are grateful to Desire from the bottom of their hearts, and at the same time hate the Rat Hat Gang.

This wonderful order was one of the reasons why she chose to work as a servant in the first place.

The two sisters who are fatherless and motherless are simply the epitome of weakness. No one dares to hurt them without any reason, unless they also want to be fed to rats.

After wandering around for a while, Tanya returned home.

As soon as they pushed away, a little girl with a cute face excitedly jumped on Tanya.

Tanya smiled and buried her hands in her sister's hair, stroking it gently.

"Little Penny, wouldn't it be boring to be alone at home?"

Benetta shook her head obediently:

"It's not boring at all. I asked the teacher for some more previous test papers and I'm studying them now. It's very interesting."

Little Beni actually knows that studying is not fun at all, but compared to her sister's job outside, studying is as easy as playing a game.

After saying that, Benita grabbed her sister's arm, opened her sleeve, and looked for something.

Tanya smiled fondly:

"Don't worry, my employer won't hit me this time, and the monthly salary is much higher than before. You can go to middle school for a short time."

Hearing this, Benita, who was jumping lively, immediately calmed down. She held her sister's hand and said cautiously:

"I-I don't want to go to school."

Tanya's face sank:

"What did you say?"

Benita turned her head to the side, not daring to look into her sister's eyes:

"The tuition is too expensive."

Tanya puffed up her face and pretended to be angry lamely:

"Now that tuition fees have been reduced so much, if you successfully pass the test, you can enroll for only 20 pounds. Do you want to work hard every day like me and not be able to fight back even if you are beaten or scolded?"

Benita looks stubborn

"Sister, you should save money, think about your own happiness, prepare a wedding dress for yourself, and go see a doctor. Sister, you went out to work when you were eleven. I am twelve years old this year...

"

Tanya burst out laughing:

"You are still worried about my happiness, little Penny, don't worry, your sister will definitely find a good man to spend her life with, and I have also taken care of the money. There is a famous businessman who is willing to sponsor you to go to college.

"

Benita asked happily:

"Really?"

But a girl who was born in a slum since she was a child soon realized that there are no good people in the world who would help others regardless of reward, and a rich businessman.

A possibility suddenly occurred to her.

Benita said with a trembling voice:

"Sister, did you agree to any conditions of that businessman?"

Tanya looked confused:

"What are the conditions?"

Benita said:

"Did he ask you to be his...lover?"

Tanya blushed, raised the newspaper and gently slapped Benita on the head:

"What are you thinking? Mr. Wright is not such a person! Moreover, he is young and handsome, how could he fall in love with someone like me."

Benita looked at her sister suspiciously.

Tanya quickly opened the newspaper in her hand and pointed to the front page, where a row of large characters stood prominently.

"Mr. Wright, the famous philanthropist and entrepreneur, funded the city's high schools, saying that everyone should have the opportunity to receive education."

Under this typesetting, there is a photo of Wright. Although Hewen, who still had a beard at the time, did not look young, he did have some charming charm.

Benita looked at Hewen's photo and instantly no longer worried about him falling in love with her sister.

But the precocious girl has another worry.

'My sister will not be fascinated by this uncle.'

Benita is not worried that Hevin has any ill intentions or good intentions towards her sister.

Because she grew up in a slum and always believed that the distance between people like Hevin and them was impossible to bridge.

This is a fate they cannot resist.
