Chapter 20: Five Hundred Arhats

Songshan Mountain is picturesque and is one of the Five Mountains. Since ancient times, many literati have left their mark here. Although the quality of most of the poems is not very good, at least the quantity is not small.

In later generations, there was a very famous painting called The Ancient Temple in the Deep Mountains. The content of the painting is probably that there is a monk carrying water in the deep mountains, and there is a remote and crooked road, surrounded by dense forests.

The monk carrying water and the crooked path suggest that there is a temple hidden in the forest. Otherwise, where would this monk live?

Nowadays, there is such a temple on Songshan Mountain, which is the Shaolin Temple.

Compared with the Shaolin Temple in Lu Xiaofeng's world, although the Shaolin Temple today is famous, it is only first-class at best. It is relatively famous in the whole North, but it is still far away from being the best in the world, the leader of the righteous way, and even the so-called world martial arts master Shaolin.

A long, long distance to travel.

About a hundred years ago, Bodhidharma set out from India and killed many thieves along the way. He barely managed to slay demons. After many hardships, he finally arrived in the Central Plains.

Since him, Buddhism in India has completely declined, and the mainstream sect has changed from Buddhism to Brahmanism. It can be said that he is the final master of primitive Buddhism. After him, primitive Buddhism has declined.

After arriving in the Central Plains, he met Huike. When he was young, Huike first studied Confucianism and then Taoism. Finally, he met Bodhidharma, became a monk, and became the second ancestor of Zen.

Since then, Zen Buddhism has become the Buddhist school with the deepest degree of Chineseization. It can even be said that the reason why Zen Buddhism will flourish in the future is inseparable from this point.

As for the great rise of Zen Buddhism, it was more than a hundred years later. At that time, there were two Zen monks, one named Huineng and the other named Shenxiu.

Shenxiu's point of view is: The body is like a bodhi tree, and the mind is like a mirror, which should be brushed diligently at all times to prevent it from being contaminated by dust.

Huineng's point of view is: Bodhi has no tree, and the mirror is not a stand. There is nothing in the beginning, so how can it be contaminated by dust?

It seems that the two people's views are like talking nonsense and talking nonsense, but they represent two different views.

Shenxiu believes that practicing Buddhism requires seriousness, certain methods, certain conditions, and a certain process, emphasizing gradual enlightenment.

Hui Neng believes that as long as one is enlightened in the heart, one is a Buddha. One emphasizes gradual enlightenment and the other emphasizes sudden enlightenment. The former emphasizes the learning process, while the latter emphasizes the change of the mind and the sublimation of the mind.

Monk Huike had already seen this little story in a large library, and he was deeply moved.

In his opinion, both of their opinions are reasonable, but they are just different processes of cultivating Buddhism. He cannot say that Shenxiu is wrong, nor can he say that Huineng's is completely right.

However, it must be admitted that Huineng's statement is more suitable for today's Buddhism and the new Zen Buddhism after the transformation under the Qin Dynasty. In history, it was after Huineng that Zen Buddhism began to truly flourish.

However, after the rise of Zen Buddhism, the average quality of Zen monks has also declined, which is an undeniable fact.

Recalling the development history of Zen Buddhism in other worlds, Huike has been trying to compile various precepts for the new Zen Buddhism for these days.

The most important thing is not to conflict with the criminal law, and now he can recite hundreds of thousands of words of Qin Law.

"Master, I'm back." Monk Tanzong said calmly.

"Well, this is the model of the future Five Doctors Luohan Cannon. What do you think?"

The model strictly complies with the requirements of Qin law. It is neither gold, silver, copper, nor precious jade, but the most common clay Buddha statue. There may be stone Buddha statues in the future, but metal jade is impossible.

After hearing this, Monk Tanzong looked carefully up and down. The shape of the new Fifth Doctor Arhat Cannon was like a cannon. It was completely different from the previous Buddha statues with human faces. At first glance, Tanzong frowned slightly.

But then he seemed to think of Qinfa and Ying Zheng's words, and nodded seriously: "Okay, very good."

"I think so too. After His Majesty's heavenly troops arrive, the Zen monks will get up immediately when they hear the sound of cannons every morning."

"When the second cannon fires, they will go to the canteen to eat. From now on, they can eat meat openly. They no longer have to sneak to the back mountains to steal chickens and dogs, hahahaha."

"And when the third cannon fires, we will start chanting sutras. From today on, what Zen Buddhism recites is no longer those complicated sutras, but the latest version of Qin Fa."

Half an hour later, after breakfast is almost digested, you can continue to fire cannons and start practicing martial arts. As for the other monks, they need to start reading and copying the latest scriptures.

Thinking of such a scene, Huike's face was once again filled with a smile. He was very happy just thinking about it: "Our scriptures must also be streamlined. They can no longer be as mysterious and mysterious as before, filled with a lot of words that ordinary people cannot understand."

"We need to compile the simplest Buddhist scriptures that ordinary people can recite based on the Qin Law and our actual situation. The number of words does not need to be many, and the language should be simple. It is best to make up some short stories to combine the ideas in the Buddhist scriptures.

Be part of these little stories.”

Tan Zong also laughed as he imagined the scene Hui Ke described in his mind.

Although there are many low-quality monks in Buddhism, there are also some who are truly devout, and Tan Zong is such a true monk.

"Now, the demands put forward by His Majesty are actually nothing. Eating meat, drinking alcohol, or even killing people, it's not a problem if you think about it carefully."

"Those who are not willing to kill can stay in the temple, study classics every day, and cultivate land and vegetables to support themselves. Those who are willing to kill can serve as warrior monks, practice martial arts, fight on the battlefield, and contribute to the empire."

"As for marrying a wife and having children, aren't many monks doing that now? It's just that they do it quietly, and overall it's acceptable."

"As for those who are really pious and don't want to get married and have children, or eat meat and drink wine, they are only a minority among the minority."

"Yes, as long as the core of our Buddhism remains unchanged, everything else is not a problem. But what is the core of our Buddhism? Different people have different views. In the old monk's opinion, it is goodness and Buddha."

"Goodness leads people to do good. Our ideas are good and positive after all. Buddha is to become a Buddha. Everyone has the opportunity to become a Buddha as long as they are enlightened in their hearts. If the Buddha is not in the spiritual mountain, he is in our hearts and around us.

Everyone has the opportunity to become a Buddha."

"While abiding by Qin law, as long as we grasp these two points, our Buddhism can continue to be passed down. The rest are all rules and precepts, and they are all external."

After dreaming about the future, Huike finally asked Tan Zong about the outcome of his trip: "What did your Majesty say?"

"His Majesty's mind is far broader than we imagined, he said..."

Then Tan Zong finished what Ying Zheng said word for word, and even imitated the reactions of everyone at that time vividly. Soon Huike nodded repeatedly and kept chanting Amitabha.

"As expected of Your Majesty, you are upright and upright, but if you want to be worthy of your Majesty's heart, only Your Majesty has such a broad-minded mind."

"Tan Zong, your Golden Bell Shield has reached the eleventh level. You are a real grand master. You are no weaker than the so-called three great masters."
