Chapter 3 The Era of Cataclysm

Looking at this bowl of gurgling, unpleasant-smelling yellow soup, Duke fell into deep thought - is this something people can drink?
"Thank you, aunt. I think... I don't need these, really."
Although Duke had a very good impression of Aunt Kathy, who had taken good care of him these days, it was completely different from drinking this bowl of dark food.
Duke didn't know if his stomach was strong, but he didn't want to try.
When Casey saw Duke's refusal, he didn't insist too much, but had a sad and sad look on his face.
"Okay, okay, I know you may not be used to the food here. After all, you haven't lived here before."
Kathy waved her hand, and the servant quickly took the food away. Then she sat in the empty seat next to Duke.
Uncle Barritt, who was sitting on the throne, then spoke:
"Everyone is here, let's eat."
Servants filed in.
Duke breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the food in their hands.
The food was similar to what the maid had brought to his room before, and it was not the dark cuisine that Casey brought.
There were some black and red vegetables, fried meat from an unknown animal, a three-legged chicken the size of a domestic pig, and red wine that was sour, astringent, and smelled of rust.
It's definitely not delicious, but it's not hard to say it's unpalatable. I can only say it's edible.
Duke didn't know whether it was because of his own reasons, or because the Elvis family had a rule of keeping silent after eating, but since he sat here, everyone stopped talking, and this lunch was extremely quiet.
Duke wanted to communicate with everyone, but he felt that they were all relatively indifferent, and Duke didn't have the habit of being hot-faced and cold-blooded, so he had no choice but to give up.
Of course, it's not that no one talked to Duke, at least Casey was very enthusiastic, and Duke was a little uncomfortable with the enthusiasm.
Fortunately, half way through the meal, a servant came to Casey and whispered, as if there was something important. Casey smiled apologetically at everyone, and then kissed Duke on the forehead regardless of his objection, and left in a hurry
left.
Duke could finally eat in peace.
More than ten minutes later.
"I'm done eating."
Duke wiped his mouth, and after seeing Uncle Bart nodded without saying anything, he left with good sense.
After Duke walked out of the restaurant, the dull restaurant seemed to come back to life instantly.
The moment he closed the door, Duke vaguely heard someone say:
"Why didn't he die..."
After a slight pause in his hand movements, Duke turned around and left without changing his expression.
"Master Duke, do you have any other orders?"
The maid Alyssa appeared in front of Duke out of nowhere, without even the sound of footsteps.
This little maid makes no sound when she walks!
Duke complained a little in his heart, but still asked with a smile on his face:
"Did you eat?"
"No."
Alyssa lowered her eyes.
"Then you go eat first and don't worry about me."
Duke waved his hand. In the Elvis family, servants cannot eat before their masters.
"Yes, Master."
Alyssa backed away slowly, then turned and left.
Watching Alyssa's back disappear, Duke straightened his clothes and left.
After more than ten minutes, he returned to his room unhurriedly. After closing the door, Duke instantly leaned against the wall, panting slightly, his heart beating rapidly.
"The 'him' of 'Why didn't he die?' refers to me..."
Duke had previously ignored, or subconsciously avoided, a very serious question - why was he in the coffin, and why did he get up from the coffin!
To put it simply, why did he die?
Duke had some luck before. According to Alyssa, he suddenly fainted three days ago and lost his vital signs - this might have been an accident.
But now it seems that even if it was an accident, there are still people in this family who want him to die!
And, what if it’s not an accident?
Coming to this strange world, Duke must use the greatest malice to speculate on others.
You can't stay in this home for long!
After going to the bathroom to take a shower and change his clothes, Duke sat on a chair and began to sort out the situation he knew so far.
He, Duke, is a direct descendant of the Elvis family, and the Elvis family is a famous family in Dawn City.
Logically speaking, with his status, he would not be able to walk around in Dawn City, but he would at least gain the respect of many people.
But that's not actually the case - because he only returned to the Elvis family a week ago.
A week ago, he was just a wanderer outside the city.
Duke also had some impression of the original memory of this body. Just like what the church pastor said, he used to fight predators and snatch food from corpse hyenas.
And the most important thing is that he used to be stupid and stupid, and seemed to have some mental problems. To put it bluntly, he was a fool.
When he was found by Aunt Kathy, many people in the Elvis family didn't like him. They seemed to think that he had lost a member of their own family. After all, it would be a bit unpleasant to have a fool in the family who is still a direct descendant.
Of course, at that time, everyone just didn't like him, and no one said anything like "Why didn't he die?"
Duke didn't know what happened to his family in the past few days after he "died". But he knew that after he came back to life, he might have affected some people, or most of the interests?
Duke felt that if he just disliked a person, he would probably not say such malicious words. There must be a conflict of interests involved.
However, Duke had some doubts.
According to Aunt Kathy, he was left in the wilderness of the city due to an accident after he was born, and he spent the first half of his life wandering in the wilderness.
But looking at his white and slender hands, and his skin that seemed to be able to squeeze out water, they looked nothing like a wanderer.
This is obviously inconsistent with what Cathy said, wandering for half a life is definitely not like this.
"Could Aunt Kathy be mistaken? I'm not an Elvis?"
Duke suddenly came up with this idea.
But when I think about it, I think it's impossible. After all, he is just a weakling with no power. Who would recognize relatives randomly and have nothing to do with him...
Duke's index finger tapped the table rhythmically.
His memory before his "death" was very vague, and his memory after his resurrection was very little. Except for the deep impression of the priest with the pistol in his left hand and the grenade in his right hand, he only knew a little about everything else.
After thinking for a while, Duke pressed a green button on the table. This was the way to call the servant.
Soon, there was a knock on the door.
"Master Duke, are you looking for me?"
"come in."
Elsa walked in respectfully.
"Please give me your orders."
Looking at the little maid, Duke pointed to the chair opposite.
"Sit down, I want to learn about...well, this world."
Duke said straight to the point.
Anyway, he was a fool in the eyes of others before, so it shouldn't be against the rules.
"Okay, Master."
As expected, Alyssa didn't say anything. She took a thin booklet from the bookshelf next to her.
It says "Diary of the Cataclysm Era"
Duke discovered another small problem that he had ignored before, that is, the fonts in this world were different from any fonts he had ever seen, just like ghost symbols, but he recognized them and could communicate fluently.
Alyssa didn't notice anything strange about Duke. She stood in front of Duke and spoke softly:
"According to the speculation in the Catastrophic Era log, we don't know how many years ago, there was a devastating war in our world. This war almost caused the death of human civilization. But human beings are strong, and those who remain are
Humanity still survived. In this dangerous and irradiated wilderness, they survived like savages. They are our ancestors..."
"After an unknown number of years, our writing was born, and with the excavation of some ancient ruins, we integrated part of the pre-war knowledge and formed a new civilization, which is called the Catastrophic Era... Now it is
