Chapter 2 Colleagues
The Los Angeles Police Department has 21 districts under its jurisdiction, and the 21 districts are divided into 4 command areas based on region, called substations.
Central Branch, Southern Branch, Western Branch, Canyon Branch.
There are also two additional divisions, the Detective Bureau and the Special Operations Bureau.
The Police Detective Bureau is responsible for investigating criminal cases, which is somewhat similar to the Criminal Investigation Detachment of the Municipal Public Security Bureau in China, except that the Police Detective Bureau is more independent.
Luke is a detective in the Detective Bureau's Robbery-Murder Division.
Commonly known as the Crime Squad.
"Woooo..."
A black Harley motorcycle drove into the police detective station.
Luke took off his helmet and looked at the building of the Detective Bureau, feeling a little complicated.
The Chinese police and the Los Angeles police are completely different concepts, and the change of identity is not easy.
The Chinese police represent honor and an iron rice bowl, and Luke is also a member of this group and has a strong sense of belonging.
Being a Los Angeles police officer is just a job. Although the salary is very good, you have to bear the risk of being shot.
Luke has no intention of sacrificing himself for the citizens of Los Angeles.
It will take some time for him to fully integrate into this city.
At 8:59 in the morning, Luke entered the office of the 1st Squadron of the Robbery-Murder Division.
The office is divided into five areas, office area, lounge, conference room, tea room, and captain's office.
Luke walked through the office area filled with documents and walked to his desk in the southwest corner. He acted very low-key, but he still attracted the attention of his colleagues.
"Yeah, he is indeed a big star who always makes his final appearance. Not bad at all." A bald white man in his thirties pointed to the clock on the wall.
Luke gave him a straight middle finger.
If you want to work in the Los Angeles Police Department, you have to be a jerk, but you can't be a wimp.
"Creak..."
The door to the captain's office opened, and a white middle-aged woman wearing black-rimmed glasses walked out, holding a stack of documents under her right arm, "Everyone, come to the conference room for a meeting."
Susan, captain of the 1st Squadron of the Robbery-Murder Division.
Luke has never seen her smile since time traveling to the Los Angeles Police Department, and she always has a serious face.
Luke doesn't like her very much, which may be one of the few things Luke and the other team members agree on.
Luke entered the conference room last and sat at the end of the conference table.
Susan placed the document on the conference table and pulled over the whiteboard next to it. On it were the words "Taser Robbery" written in large letters.
"Everyone, since February 18th, two robberies have occurred in Los Angeles. The crimes were committed on Friday night, and the tools used were Taser guns.
The two cases have many similarities and are likely to be committed by the same suspect.
Deputy Vincent, please tell us about the progress of the case investigation."
A taut, silver-haired old man continued, “Both victims are young white women with long blond hair and about 170cm tall.
They all received electric shocks from behind. It is basically certain that the suspect used a Taser, but no scraps of paper were found at the scene..."
Taser has no bullets. It fires electrified 'darts' to subdue the target. It is also a non-lethal weapon commonly used by police.
Every time a Taser fires a pneumatic magazine, more than forty small colorful pieces of paper will be ejected, with the serial number of the gun printed on them. The source of the gun can be traced through the paper scraps.
"Other than the similarity in appearance, no overlap has been found between the two victims. According to the victim's description, the suspect is likely to be male and wearing a hat on his head.
Because the light was dark at night, I couldn’t see the suspect’s face clearly..."
The silver-haired old man Vincent talked freely. He was already in his sixties and could continue to work thanks to the employment extension system of the Los Angeles Police Department.
He may be the oldest police officer in the detective department or even the entire Los Angeles, and has rich experience in scene investigation, but don't expect him to hunt down suspects.
"The crime scenes are relatively remote. The female victim was found naked. All her cash, accessories, and clothes were looted, but she was not violated..."
Luke has not yet adapted to his role as a Los Angeles police officer and is often lazy and fishing.
But when I hear the description of the case, I still can't help but think about the case out of professional habits.
Luke has also participated in investigating many robberies in the past.
Generally speaking, the purpose of a robbery is very clear, either to steal money or to rob someone.
But in this case, the suspect's purpose was not clear.
You say he robbed people of money. He just grabbed valuables and ran away. Why did he take off his clothes?
Very unprofessional and increases the risk of getting caught.
You could say he was robbed, but there was no real action.
Very contradictory.
After Deputy Captain Vincent explained the case, he went directly to arrange tasks for the team members.
Luke was assigned to check surveillance, which was his least favorite job task.
I don’t know if it was a psychological effect, but Luke felt that Captain Susan’s face became even colder, and he said in an accent with a hint of London accent,
"One more thing, no one is allowed to disclose the details of the case to the media, they already know enough.
I don’t want to see anything about the case on the news anymore, do you understand?”
"Yes, captain."
…
Luke took a cup of coffee and sat at his desk to watch the surveillance camera.
Investigation and surveillance is a commonly used investigation method by Chinese criminal police.
The number of cameras in the United States is much smaller than that in China. With a similar land area, talking about per capita is a bit nonsense.
Americans pay more attention to privacy. There are not many cameras for the purpose of monitoring public security. Most of them are private cameras, which makes investigation difficult.
This method of investigating crimes that has been tried and tested in China is not very effective in Los Angeles.
A total of two robberies occurred, both on Friday night. The surveillance time Luke checked was between 8pm and 12pm.
As for why the suspect chose Friday to commit the crime, Luke felt that it might have something to do with the American salary system.
Many companies in the United States adopt a weekly salary system or a bi-weekly salary system, and wages are usually paid on Friday afternoon.
Of course, this is just his speculation and there is no relevant evidence.
In the morning, Luke had been checking surveillance videos, drinking three cups of coffee, going to the toilet twice, and smoking two cigarettes.
I had a beef burger, a French fries, a fried chicken leg, and a grilled chicken wing for lunch.
I continued to check the surveillance cameras in the afternoon. My eyes were sore and my buttocks were numb, but I still found no valuable clues.
At 6.30, it’s time to get off work.
Luke stood up, moved around, packed his things and prepared to leave.
The bald white man standing next to the printer looked at Luke and said with a smile, "You are almost more accurate than my alarm clock? Do you like this new nickname?"
Luke winked, "Alarm clock? You want to put me next to your bed? Your wife will definitely fall in love with you."
The bald white man said contemptuously, "Asshole."
"Don't praise me all the time, you'll make me proud.
See you tomorrow, guys." Luke finished his sentence and left the office.
The other team members had different expressions, ranging from envy to contempt, but no one left. They were all prepared to work overtime when encountering such an urgent case.
The silver-haired old man spread his hands, a little helpless, "The robber may commit another crime the day after tomorrow, but this kid actually looks like he has nothing to do with me.
Why does such an irresponsible kid still stay in the Robbery-Murder Department?
Is this a nursing home?"
"Haha..." Colleagues burst into laughter.
"He has always been a jerk, but he used to be more attentive in investigating cases." The white man pointed to his bald head, "He has changed since he was injured. Could it be 'post-traumatic stress disorder'?"
The silver-haired old man sighed softly and waved his hand, "OK, let the captain worry about it.
