Chapter 43 Cultural Export(1/2)
Next to the archway in Chinatown.
Daisy got off the motorcycle and looked at the street in front of her, "Wow, this is Chinatown? I've heard about it often, but this is my first time here."
Luke parked his Harley-Davidson and stretched out his right hand, "Miss Daisy, can I be your guide?"
Daisy smiled and said, "I don't know how to tip."
"My pleasure."
Daisy hesitated for a moment and put her left hand on Luke's right hand.
As the sky gets darker, red lanterns light up in Chinatown, making it look more Chinese than during the day.
You can see many Chinese faces on the streets. It is easy to tell the difference between locals and tourists based on their demeanor, clothing, and behavior.
The streets were very lively with people coming and going. Daisy glanced around, finding everything new and strange, but she seemed to have no intention of learning more.
A stage was set up not far away, and many spectators gathered. From time to time, cheers were heard, and some foreigners shouted, "good, good."
"Chinese Kung Fu."
Luke led Daisy in and saw a big blue painted face standing on the stage, holding a red fan in his right hand. He waved the fan to his face, "Pa!"
When I blinked and looked around, I saw that it had turned into a big red painted face.
There was another round of cheers from all around.
The big red painted face turned around on the stage, and with a wave of the fan, it turned into a big yellow painted face again.
"Wow..." Daisy also looked surprised, "Is this Chinese magic? This is my first time seeing it."
Luke said, "This is a traditional Chinese opera called Sichuan Opera Face Changing. It is said that the performer can change fourteen faces in an instant."
Daisy wondered, "How did he do it?"
"This unique skill has been classified as a national second-level secret. It has a strict apprenticeship and it is difficult for outsiders to find out." Luke's words made Daisy even more interested.
They applauded and praised repeatedly, and the two did not leave until the performance was over.
People are both curious and resistant to unknown things.
Face-Off in Sichuan Opera made Daisy interested in Chinese culture and willing to learn more about it instead of just watching.
Daisy walked to the door of a store and pointed to the items inside, "Are these made of wood?"
"This is bamboo weaving, all made of bamboo."
"Made of bamboo? Are you sure?" Daisy pointed to an exquisite bamboo vase and said with an incredulous look on her face.
"Bamboo has relatively good toughness. Artists will split bamboo into thin wires and thick branches. The thick branches are used as bones, and the thin wires are used as ropes. They are intertwined and woven into various patterns and tools."
Daisy entered the store to look around, and finally selected a vase.
Luke wanted to pay, but Daisy refused.
The two of them got into trouble, and after walking not far, they saw a candied haws shop.
Luke swallowed instinctively and bought two skewers.
Daisy looked at the red candied haws and blinked her big eyes, "What is this?"
"Hawthorn, with a layer of syrup on the outside, is a special snack in China."
Daisy took it, took a bite, and nodded slightly, "Good, sour and sweet, I like this taste."
The two of them were eating candied haws, and it really felt like a young couple going shopping.
Passing by a cheongsam shop, Luke stopped and said, "Daisy, do you want to go in and have a look?"
"I really want to see this style of clothing somewhere..."
Luke reminded, "Cheongsam."
"Yes, I saw it in a movie."
"Want to go in and try it?" Luke really wanted to see Daisy wearing a cheongsam.
"Now? No, I'm not ready yet..." Daisy reached out and touched the fabric, "Maybe I will be willing to try it if I have the opportunity in the future..."
"OK, let's go get something to eat." Luke was somewhat disappointed and pointed to a restaurant called 'Huayueju' in front of him.
Daisy nodded, "I like Chinese food."
"What dishes do you like to eat?"
“Kung Pao chicken, General Tso’s chicken, sweet and sour pork, fried noodles, and spring rolls are all very good.”
Luke smiled and took Daisy's hand into the restaurant, "I'll take you to eat some different Chinese food."
"I am looking forward."
After entering the restaurant, the two found a seat by the window, where they could see the street view outside.
An Asian woman wearing a cheongsam came over and handed them a menu. Daisy looked at the waitress and wondered if she regretted not trying the cheongsam shop.
"Daisy, what do you want to eat?"
Daisy smiled and said, "Aren't you going to take me to eat some different Chinese food?"
Luke glanced at the menu briefly, "Roasted squab, musu meat, ants climbing the tree, fish head with chopped pepper, mushrooms and rapeseed, Buddha jumping over the wall, and a pot of Longjing."
This restaurant has a good sense of service and the food is served quickly.
The first course is roasted squab.
Daisy said, "I like to eat roast duck, but this one...is a bit small."
"This is a pigeon."
"What? Pigeon! I bought it, but you actually eat pigeon."
“Very delicious.”
"Nonono..." Daisy resisted.
"Delicious." Luke picked up a pigeon leg and started to chew on it.
"Oh..." Daisy frowned, as if she couldn't accept it.
Luke put down the other pigeon leg and said, "Taste it, trust me."
Daisy hesitated for a while, then when she saw that Luke was eating well, she tried to take a small bite, tasted it, and started eating slowly.
Luke smiled and said, "How was it?"
"It's...ok."
Luke handed her another piece of dove wing. Daisy did not refuse and ate it again.
Other dishes were also served one after another.
There are things Daisy likes and there are things she cannot accept.
For example, when it comes to the fish head with chopped peppers, Luke tried to persuade her several times, even to the point that Daisy was unwilling to try it.
What surprised Luke was that Daisy's favorite food was actually ants climbing a tree, and she tasted like spaghetti.
The second one should be roasted squab. Although she didn't say it explicitly, Luke asked for another roasted squab, and she ate most of it.
Overall, this dinner was pretty good.
After eating, the two of them were ready to go back.
On the roadside, Luke saw a paper-cutting shop.
The boss is a Chinese man in his forties. He has very skillful hands and can cut paper very quickly.
Luke asked him to make a photo cutout for the two of them.
I saw the boss holding a piece of red paper in his left hand and scissors in his right hand. He looked at Luke and Daisy. As the scissors opened and closed, scraps of paper fell on the table.
In a few clicks, the cone shape of the two people taking a photo was created. After some trimming, the paper cutting was done.
After that, the boss mounted the paper cut in the glass frame.
Daisy took the paper-cutting and looked at the lifelike figures, a little surprised, "It's so amazing, it's almost as good as the sketches."
"Daisy, this is my gift to you. You won't refuse it this time."
"Thank you for the gift, I like it very much." Daisy picked it up and looked at it again before putting the paper-cut into her bag.
In the paper-cut painting, the two people are shopping hand in hand like a couple, which brings a successful ending to the date...
Luke dropped Daisy off at his door.
Daisy got out of the car and returned the helmet to Luke, "Thank you for the dinner. I had a great time tonight."
"Won't you invite me in for a cup of coffee?"
"I'll treat you to a big dinner another day, bye." Daisy smiled and waved goodbye.
Luke nodded slightly and watched her walk to the door of the house.
Start the Harley and prepare to leave.
To be continued...
