Chapter 1 The Great Change

Tang Jian, who was closing his eyes and resting, suddenly opened his eyes when he heard the conversation between the two and listened intently to the conversation between them.

"Oh, who said it was not? I thought that a good official like Tang Jian was born in the Qing Dynasty, but I didn't expect that he would be the same as Li Hongzhang!" The uncle said while sighing.

"Oh, brother, you're going to Shanghai too!" said the middle-aged man to Tang Jian who came over.

Tang Jian patted the dust on his clothes and said with a smile: "Yes, I'm also going to Shanghai to make a living. I'll listen to what the big guys are talking about."

The middle-aged man said again: "How could Tang Jian be as powerless as Li Hongzhang? Didn't Tang Jian come back from the Liaodong Peninsula and the Japanese? Don't forget who defeated the Japanese and helped the Qing Dynasty sign the first treaty to ask for compensation from foreigners. Taiwan and Penghu Islands were also called back by Commander Tang Jian and Tang."

"Tsk!" The uncle looked at the middle-aged man with contempt and said, "If Tang Jian had not led the Beiyang Fleet to retreat from Lushun in advance, Yuan Shikai could have allowed the Beiyang Army in the Northeast to retreat. If Tang Jian had not been self-righteous, the Northeast and Lushun might have returned to the hands of our Qing Dynasty. Alas, we would not have to leave our hometown like this."

Tang Jian asked in confusion: "Uncle, how did you know that the Beiyang Fleet retreated from Lushun first!"

When the uncle saw that someone was interested in his words, he cleared his voice and said seriously: "Brother, you don't know yet. This incident was very popular in Beijing. Last time, a relative of mine returned from Beijing to visit relatives."

"Oh, what do you mean?" Tang Jian asked as if he was very interested.

"This, even the imperial list is posted!" The uncle said excitedly, "The imperial list said that after the Beiyang Fleet captured Lushun, Tang Jian of the Beiyang Fleet refused to obey the unified order and allowed the Beiyang Fleet to retreat from Lushun without authorization, resulting in the Beiyang New Army in the northeast being surrounded by Russian troops, and more than 20,000 Yuan Yi and Xinquan people were killed. Later, Yuan Shikai asked Nie Shicheng to evacuate the Northeast, but this old general Nie was loyal and brave. He was ready to fight to the death with the Russians. As a result, Yuan Shikai sent the old general to Xinjiang on the charge of not following the military order."

"What then?" Tang Jian continued to ask.

"Then, Tang Jian retreated from Lushun without authorization and fled back to Weihai Guard in a panic. The emperor ordered Tang Jian to go to Beijing to take the crime. Unexpectedly, Tang Jian disobeyed and fought with the Beiyang Army in Zhili. You said that on land, the navy could beat the army. In the end, the Beiyang Fleet lost, lost the Weihai Guard and fled to Fuzhou. Not to mention that Tang Jian actually colluded with Li Jingfang to rebel. Now, Tang Jian relied on the Beiyang Fleet and Li Jingfang to collude with the Yangtze River, and competed with Yuan Shikai's new Beiyang Army."

"I don't believe this!" the middle-aged man pouted and said disdainfully.

When the uncle heard that someone didn't believe it, he immediately straightened his back and said, "What I said is true. My relative was in the capital and saw the imperial list with his own eyes. In the past few days, Yuan Shikai and Tang Jian were fighting fiercely on the Yangtze River! The Qing Dynasty may be in chaos again."

"Haha, uncle, I heard you were fighting fiercely on the front line of the Yangtze River. Then why are you going to Shanghai? It's a war zone?" Tang Jian asked.

"Young man, you don't know this. There are many foreign concessions in Shanghai, and the concessions are protected by foreigners. They will never dare to fight to Shanghai any longer!" The uncle said proudly.

"Oh, thank you!" Tang Jian ran to his position just now and closed his eyes to rest.

"Hey, I tell you, I don't believe it. I don't think Tang Jian can do such a thing. Don't forget that Commander Tang Jian is our national hero!" the middle-aged man argued.

"Hehe, you can't believe this anymore. This emperor list is what the emperor said. Do you even believe it?" the uncle retorted.

"Okay, I don't believe it anyway. I only know that Commander Tang and the Qing fleet have been winning battles. If you want to say that Yuan Shikai is treason, I believe that Tang Jian is treason, hehe, I don't believe that I don't believe that he is beaten to death!" The middle-aged man immediately retorted, and then hid in a corner and stopped talking.

The uncle was bored, so he packed up the straw under his seat and slept in his clothes.

Gradually, the night on the sea began to fall. From the small vent, Tang Jian could vaguely see the stars in the night sky, the waves outside the cabin were continuous, and snoring sounds were everywhere in the cabin, and the lower-level warehouse was still filled with strange smells.

Although Tang Jian kept his eyes closed and resting when he returned to his position, he was actually not calm inside. He kept pondering the uncle's words carefully.

Although this uncle's words cannot be 100% true, they are still credible.

Nie Shicheng was exiled, Weihaiwei was occupied by the Beiyang New Army, the Beiyang Fleet fled south to Fuzhou, and Li Jingfang rebelled. One thing sounded so incredible, but all this seemed to be happening.

Tang Jian was thinking about the connection between these things over and over again. The biggest possibility was that the political situation in Beijing was violently turbulent, and the biggest suspicion was Yuan Shikai.

But Tang Jian has known Yuan Shikai for nearly ten years. Tang Jian became famous because of Yuan Shikai, and Yuan Shikai reached the peak of power because of Tang Jian. The two can be said to be dependent on each other. They have been together for many years. They are not brothers but are even more like brothers. Tang Jian saved Yuan Shikai's life in North Korea!

Although Yuan Shikai had the greatest suspicion, Tang Jian did not dare to make a conclusion before there was any definite evidence, so everything would be clear when he found the Beiyang Fleet.

Thinking of this, Tang Jian fell asleep deeply.

Seven days later, Tang Jian arrived in Shanghai successfully. Through various relationships, Tang Jian found the German Minister Jack who was working in Shanghai.

Jack said that Tang Jian is now wanted by the Qing government, and Yuan Shikai is actively dispatching troops. He will be in the north, such as Nie Shicheng's tens of thousands of Beiyang New Army in the northeast, as well as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Zhili, Shandong and other places, and now gather in Jinan, Shandong, and ready to go south at any time. Along the Yangtze River, Feng Guozhang and Duan Qirui will each be stationed in Wuhan and Anqing areas.

Upon hearing this news, Tang Jian's suspicion of Yuan Shikai was confirmed. In the current Qing Dynasty, only Yuan Shikai could do it.

Tang Jian asked about the reactions of other countries again. Jack said that because most of the interests of Britain, the United States, France and other countries were south of the Yangtze River, the countries did not want the Qing civil war. Now the parties are matching up for peace talks. Since Germany and Tang Jian had a secret agreement, Germany still supported Tang Jian in secret.

Finally, with Jack's help, Tang Jian drove south from Shanghai on a German warship. On the afternoon of the third day, Tang Jian successfully arrived at the Fuzhou Shipbuilding Bureau.

After arriving in Fuzhou, Tang Jian saw the Longwei covered with bullet marks on the dock, and many other warships of the Beiyang Fleet were under maintenance.

When Yan Fu saw Tang Jian, he immediately knelt down, burst into tears, and blamed himself: "Commander, Yan Fu is sorry to the Beiyang Navy! I am ashamed of the commander's trust!"

Tang Jian helped Yan Fu up, but he patted Yan Fu's shoulder heavily. When Ye Zugui and other captains saw that his commander had finally escaped safely, they all rushed up excitedly. Tang Jian shook hands with them one by one, indicating that everyone should not be too excited.

After everyone calmed down, Tang Jian immediately summoned all the officers of the Beiyang Navy to hold a meeting in a warehouse in the Fuzhou Shipyard.

After everyone sat down, a kind of sadness filled the entire conference room, and many people's eyes were slightly red, looking at Tang Jian quietly.

Tang Jian asked Yan Fu to talk about what happened to the fleet these days when he was not in the Beiyang Fleet.

Yan Fu wiped his glasses and slowly told the story of what happened after the Beiyang Fleet broke through with grief and anger.

That day, Yan Fu led the Beiyang Fleet to successfully break through the Russian mine formation and successfully break through the Russian Pacific Fleet.

Unexpectedly, before returning to Weihaiwei, Yan Fu and his team met Chu Zhaoliang's submarine force on the Bohai Sea.

It turned out that day, after receiving Tang Jian's order, Chu Zhaoliang returned to Weihaiwei and Zhang Zuolin to guard Weihaiwei to prevent the Russian fleet from taking advantage of the situation.

After receiving the order from Tang Jian for help, Zhang Zuolin went north to Tianjin to ask for help, preparing to ask for help from Yuan Shikai. Unexpectedly, Yuan Shikai intercepted Zhang Zuolin halfway, and Zhang Zuolin did not know his life or death. However, Zhang Zuolin sent a message to Chu Zhaoliang at the last moment, saying that the court might be unfavorable to Weihaiwei. After receiving Zhang Zuolin's news, Chu Zhaoliang immediately transferred important personnel from Weihaiwei.

However, halfway through the transfer work, Yuan Shikai ordered the Beiyang New Army general Li Chun to lead a division to surround the Weihai Guard. Li Chun also took out the emperor's imperial edict, saying that the Beiyang Navy commander Tang Jian colluded with Russia and plotted to rebel, and let the Beiyang Fleet guarding the Weihai Guard accept Li Chun's advice to peacefully accept Weihai Guard.

The Beiyang Navy should not believe Li Chun's words. Under Chu Zhaoliang's leadership, the Beiyang Navy in Weihai Acropolis fought desperately. During the battle, the experts from Beizhu Island were safely sent to the freighter to Fuzhou, but all the laboratory equipment in Beizhu Island were destroyed.

During this period, Liu Wenqing's Nighthawk airship was ready to resist, but before Colonel Liu Wenqing's air force took off, Yuan Shikai's spy hidden in the air force burned all the airships in a fire.

Seeing that all the airships were destroyed, Colonel Liu Wenqing was forced to take all the remaining air force to help the navy defend the Weihai Guard. In the end, the Beiyang Navy was outnumbered, so Chu Zhaoliang had to order a retreat. At this point, the Weihai Guard fell into Li Chun's hands.

After Chu Zhaoliang withdrew from Weihai Guard, he found the Beiyang Fleet that broke out on the Bohai Sea and told Yan Fu about the situation of Weihai Guard.

After repeated consideration, Yan Fu decided to ignore Yuan Shikai's order to let the Beiyang Fleet return to Weihaiwei, and then led the Beiyang Fleet south to Fuzhou.

After the Beiyang Fleet went south to Fuzhou, Yuan Shikai immediately sent a telegram to the whole country, saying that the commander of the Beiyang Fleet colluded with the Russians, causing the Northeast to fall into the hands of the Russians, and also defected with the Beiyang Fleet.
