Chapter 17 The Past and Present of the Triangle Attack

For Springman, the biggest difference between Winter Sr. and Phil Jackson is that the former "left" the NCAA.

Winter Sr. was less than 30 years old when he started coaching the NCAA in 1952, making him the youngest coach in the NCAA at the time.

After coaching in college for nearly 20 years, he entered the NBA to start his coaching career, and became Phil Jackson's assistant coach in 1985, ushering in the great era of the triangle offense in the NBA.

Now, the 84-year-old Winter is no longer Phil Jackson's assistant coach, but a team consultant for the Lakers.

There are two reasons why Springman chose the elder Winter.

First, Old Winter is a native Texan, so he will naturally have special regard for Texas teams.

Second, their next opponent is Kansas State University.

Although Kansas State University is not as famous as the University of Kansas, it is still much more famous than the University of Texas.

According to our ancestors, they had a Hall of Fame player, Mickey Richmond.

Domestic fans may not be too familiar with him.

This is a star of the same generation as Jordan. Let’s briefly list his achievements:

NBA Rookie of the Year, 6 NBA All-Stars, 1 All-Star Game MVP, 3 Second Teams, 2 Third Teams, member of the 1996 Dream Team, member of the 2002 Lakers Championship, career average of 21 points per game.

Compared with the previous "Batman" Tony Batty of Texas Tech, this is an extremely dazzling existence.

However, even a legendary player of this level still cannot compare with the influence of the old Winter at Kansas State.

Winter Sr. coached at Kansas State for a total of 15 years from 1954 until he left the NCAA in 1969.

In these 15 years, he led his team to the NCAA Elite Eight eight times and the Final Four twice. He himself was also elected as the NCAA Coach of the Year.

It can be said that during those years, Kansas State was the absolute powerhouse in the NCAA, ranking at the top of the power list all year round.

So taking advantage of the opportunity to play against Kansas State, I contacted Old Winter, and with his status as a Texas team, it should be possible to meet in person.

Three days later, the University of Texas hosted Kansas State University.

Kansas State University's current strength ranks high in the Big12 League, and the team's star player is junior Kadir Martin.

Martin was selected to the second team of the big12 last season and has a strong scoring ability.

According to history, Martin was unsuccessful in the draft after four years of college, but he made it to the NBA through his own efforts. He can be considered an inspirational figure.

This game was quite intense, but Durant scored consecutively at the critical moment, and the University of Texas won the game 71-61.

According to the technical statistics after the game, Durant scored a game-high 27 points, and Lin Ying had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

After the game, Springman found the head coach of Kansas State University and contacted the elder Winter via his phone.

Old Winter was more enthusiastic than he thought.

The triangle offense is very successful in the NBA, but now no one except the Lakers is using this tactic, not even Kansas State.

Because this tactic has very high requirements on team configuration and tactical literacy.

In a sense, it is a bit like a single lineage.

So if someone is willing to learn, Old Winter is naturally very happy, because this means that his life's hard work can be passed on.

The communication went very well, and the two were scheduled to meet in two days.

After confirming the time, Springman found Durant and Lin Ying, and he was going to take the two of them to meet the old Winter.

If they can get the "teaching advice" from the old Winter, it will definitely be helpful for the two of them to master the triangle offense.

Lin Ying was still a little excited when he heard that Springman was going to take him to see Old Winter.

There is a saying that seeing is worth hearing a hundred times.

In the past, he only used a term for the triangle offense, which was no different from Princeton's, run-and-gun, and pick-and-roll tactics.

But after watching the game between the Lakers and Bulls before, and watching it with a research attitude, I realized how awesome this tactic is.

It's like you saw a great painting and now you have to meet the artist who painted it!

Moreover, the place where Springman and Winter agreed to meet was also very interesting. It was an indoor arena in Los Angeles.

This is so close to asking Old Winter to teach Durant and the others how to play the triangle tactic!

Old Winter has gray hair and a bloated face full of wrinkles, just like a Western man in his 80s should look like.

But he still seems to be in great spirits.

In history, this man lived to be 96 years old, almost a century old. He is definitely considered to have the longest life among NBA players.

Regarding Springman's direct behavior, Old Winter said... he liked it very much!

He was originally willing to teach, and Springman also brought the players, which was a lot more convenient.

And I have heard about Durant. He is one of the top three high school students in the United States. He has shown top scoring talent so far this season. It is difficult not to pay attention to him.

He was a little surprised when he saw Lin Ying. He thought Springman would bring a traditional big center.

However, in the subsequent chat and presentation session, Old Winter gained a new understanding of Lin Ying.

And the figure of another big man soon appeared in his mind.

Toni Kukoc.

"They're perfect for this tactic."

After realizing this, he also gave Springman a reassurance.

Then, he started to teach me step by step.

The triangle offense is a systematic offense.

According to Old Winter's explanation, it is an offensive tactic based on "interpretation and reaction".

This sounds a little hard to understand, but in layman's terms, it means reading the opponent's defense, then establishing a reasonable triangle, and looking for scoring opportunities.

This is a concept, and based on different positions and end points, it can be roughly divided into four types of attacks, namely: Low.Post, Pinch.Post, Corner.Pnr and PnrBlind.Pig.

Translated into Chinese, it's post-ups, weak-side horns, corner pick-and-rolls, and blind pigs.

Of course, these are four basic tactics. Just like the concept emphasized by the old Winter, the triangle offense is not a fixed position, but needs to be read and reacted.

Therefore, many detailed tactics have evolved based on these four basic tactics, which are endless.

Then based on the technical characteristics of Durant and Lin Ying, Old Winter focused on Low.Post, which is the tactic of low singles.

The style of play that Lin Ying saw with Jordan in the low post and Kukoc holding the ball at the top of the arc was actually one of the evolved tactics of low post singles.

The only difference is that the one originally placed in the low position has been changed from the inside line to the outside line.

As Lin Ying thought before, this tactic is to bring out Jordan's destructive power in the low post.

Of course, Old Winter was not just talking about this point that Lin Ying had in mind. He also talked about a lot of details about this low-post attack.

Because as he said at the beginning, the core of the triangle offense is to read and react, so reading is the prerequisite.

Just like ordinary people playing basketball, the low-level players must first think about what techniques to use to launch the offense, while the high-level players choose what techniques to use to attack based on the defense.

So when to let Durant move inside, this is a very detailed matter.

Then if you can't use this tactic, it doesn't matter. You can switch to the triangle offense at any time.

What Old Winter then talked about was Corner.Pnr, which is the corner pick and roll.

Corner pick-and-rolls are generally a tactic used by the first and third positions.

This requires the first position to have certain breakthrough and shooting abilities, and the third position to have good passing ability.

To be specific, refer to the history of Pippen and Cole of the Bulls, and Odom and Fisher of the Lakers.

This tactic is launched at a 45-degree angle. Position 1 gives the ball to position 3, and then uses the pick-and-roll receiver at position 3 to pass the ball to start the offense. You can go to the corner to shoot a three-pointer, or you can use the basket.

The pick-and-roll at position 5 can break through and score, or go inside and directly break through and score.

Or follow the sentence, read and react, and choose the most reasonable offensive line according to the opponent's defensive focus.

Then, just like the low post attack, this tactic does not necessarily have to be initiated in the first or third position.

He has the ability to break through and shoot. Augustin can do that, and he is also the No. 1 player.

But the role of the third position can be played by Lin Ying at the fourth position, because Lin Ying's passing ability is better.

Moreover, he also has a stable ability to shoot open shots from outside, which can create greater offensive space for the first position.

The characteristic of this tactic is that Durant does not have to participate, and can be used when Durant is resting off the court.

With just a few simple tactical explanations, Lin Ying felt that the door to his new world had been opened a lot again.

Moreover, he also realized that the conclusion he came to after watching the video analysis was still one-sided.

The real triangle offense is not just a superstar isolation tactic, it is far more complex and advanced than imagined.

Teaching knowledge and solving doubts is indeed different from simply reading theoretical books.

An afternoon passes very quickly. If possible, Lin Ying hopes that time can go slower.

But Old Winter was old after all, and his energy was almost exhausted after explaining to them all afternoon.

And by the time he finished explaining, his view of Lin Ying was completely different from when he first arrived.

This thing is just like a real class. After the teacher finishes the class, he can naturally tell the difference between good and bad students.

Specifically, when leaving, Old Winter not only gave Lin Ying a copy of the book he brought, but also wrote his email address on it.

"If you have any questions, you can email me."

This is Chiguoguo's preference.

But there's nothing wrong with it, gold always shines.

Springman's previous appreciation for Lin Ying and now Old Winter's preference are all proof.

Or you can understand it as a kind of talent, a tactical talent.

Just like in many fantasy novels, Lin Ying's technology tree is different from others.

However, since there are fewer people cultivating different technology trees, it is naturally easier for them to gain favor from similar people.

Once you have the theory and understanding, then comes training.

It is not that simple to master the triangle tactic.

Just like in history, after a series of assistant coaches failed one after another, Phil Jackson once said that he was not surprised.

Because triangle tactics require a lot of basic training to improve players' ability to read the game, passing ability, tacit understanding, etc.

This is by no means as simple as "being chased, falling off a cliff, surviving a catastrophe, and learning magical skills" like in the novel.

However, half of the daily training content for Lin Ying and Durant is basic training, so they get started much faster than others.

Barnes' sophistication is also reflected at this time.

The team is practicing the triangle offense, but he just doesn't use it, just plays it...nothing.

He was not in a hurry to use the team's new tactics in the game, because he knew that if he lost using the new tactics, it would greatly dampen the players' enthusiasm for training.

This is just like holding back your ultimate move. If you don't hold it in properly, the progress bar won't be released.

And Barnes also has the capital to hold back big moves.

The University of Texas has a good record recently and cannot beat Kansas, but it is still very confident when facing other opponents.

Time flies, and in the blink of an eye, one month later.

In the past month, the University of Texas played a total of 6 games, including 2 invitational games, with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss.

As the tacit understanding of the new starting lineup increases, the team's competitiveness is also constantly improving.

And with this wave of good results, their ranking in the big12 division has also reached the third position.

It was at this time that Barnes began to lay out the triangle offense.

In the first game in February, the University of Texas and Texas Tech ushered in their second confrontation of the season.

This time it's on Texas Tech's home court.

It was in this game that the fans in attendance saw the triangle offensive tactic again in an NCAA arena after many years.

Although this triangle offense was a little different from what they had seen before, it was equally effective.

Lin Ying's passing ability, Augustin's three-pointers and breakthroughs, and even James' cutting ability were all very well demonstrated in the game.

Of course, what gives fans the biggest visual impact is Durant's huge lethality in the low post.

Originally, in the NCAA, because the venue is small, it would be difficult for you to play low-post games as comfortably as in the NBA.

But the triangle tactic solves this problem.

After Wendell trapped Texas Tech's center, Durant got a lot of low post opportunities under the basket.

With his height and wingspan as an absolute No. 5 player in the NCAA, and his confrontation that has been significantly improved compared to the beginning of the season, he has great advantages in playing opposite forwards and defenders.

Even if Wendell doesn't block anyone there, Durant can easily cause damage when facing the opponent's center after turning around.

"He's playing like Michael Jordan!"

Even the home commentator couldn't help but sigh after seeing Durant's performance.

In the end, Durant scored 35 points, setting a new season high and leading the team to successfully avenge Texas Tech.

"He called me Michael! Michael!"

In the passage back to the locker room after the game, Durant shouted to Lin Ying with excitement on his face.

Durant's excitement is understandable. Jordan is a god-like existence in the minds of basketball players.

Although maybe the commentator said that more because he was reminded of Jordan's low post scene when the Bulls were playing.

But no matter what the reason is, being compared to Jordan is already a high compliment.

Lin Ying couldn't hide his excitement and nodded.
