030 Pacific Railroad

The little fat man looked like he didn't eat.

Li Mu was still very alert. He shook the knife in his hand at the fat man and asked with a smile: "Is there anything wrong?"

What's up?

Damn you are eating and drinking here, and we are still hungry. Even if you don’t care about others, don’t you care about me, the prince?

I can only think about this, and I can never ask questions. The little fat man knows very well. If he really asks this, Li Mu might even dare to answer, "Don't care, don't care."

Not that it is not accurate, it is simply certain.

So the fat man immediately smiled on his face: "Li Mu, hehe, let's discuss something--"

Yo--Liang knows Li Mu’s name, why don’t you keep silent now?

"Hungry? It's easy to say--" Li Mu gave the little fat man a sincere smile, which made the little fat man creepy.

Perhaps thinking of Li Mu's virtue, the fat man turned around and left without saying a word. After a while, Lao Zheng came over with an expression on the execution ground. Then Li Mu paid half a pound of beef, ten big cakes, two apples, half a bottle of red wine, and a hundred dollars more in her mother's purse.

This business is really cost-effective!

However, Li Mu did not do anything at all. After thinking about it, Li Mu ordered Lao Yan to give Old Man Chen a copy, and even if the others were left alone, they wouldn't care. It would be better to let them hungry for a while, and they would remember to starve.

After dinner, Chuxue came to put the table in hand. Li Mu and Mike were temporarily out of the mood to chat. They sat on the chair to rest. Only then did Li Mu have the opportunity to appreciate the original ecology of the 19th century America.

After the War of Independence, the United States began its westward movement, which has been around for nearly a hundred years.

In this century, the U.S. territory has grown from about 800,000 square kilometers in the first thirteen states to the current fifty states, with a total area of more than 9.3 million square kilometers, nearly twelve times. The population has also grown from 3.9 million when it was first independent to 42 million, which has also increased by nearly eleven times.

It is worth mentioning that among these 42 million people, there are about 150,000 Chinese.

As early as 1785, when the United States had just been independent, three Chinese sailors came to the United States on a sailboat of the "Goddess of Wisdom". However, until the mid-19th century, Chinese people rarely came into contact with information about the United States, so naturally they had no interest in immigrating to the United States. After the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, many participants of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement were sold to Americans as slaves, which opened the curtain for Chinese immigrating to the United States. In 1849, there were only 791 Chinese people entering San Francisco, and by 1850 it increased to 4,025. After that, gradually increased. By 1873, the number of Chinese immigrants recorded by the U.S. Immigration Bureau was 150,000, which did not include the descendants of early immigrants and the unknown number of black households.

One thing is certain that the number of black households is definitely higher than the number of immigrants to the United States through formal channels, and may be much higher than.

There are currently 42 million people in the United States. This number sounds like a lot, which is more people than the United Kingdom and France, but most of them live on the economically developed East Coast of the United States. Only those who cannot survive on the East Coast will choose to go to the West Coast to participate in the development of the west coast. In this way, there are actually not many people on the West Coast of the United States now, and it is even more inconspicuous in this vast territory.

The scenery outside the car window confirms this. When the train just left San Francisco, there were fields and houses on both sides of the railway. After passing Stockton, the road gradually became desolate. Outside the car window, large areas of primeval forests and endless wilderness were passed. Occasionally, there were scattered houses, which meant that humans had begun to develop difficultly.

It has to be said that the United States is indeed a paradise at this time. Large undeveloped areas give wild animals a good living and reproductive environment. Large groups of bisons often appear outside the car windows. The train was even forced to stop less than two hours after leaving Stockton because the train hit a bison to death. The bison's corpse was crossed on the rails and the train could not move forward. The bison's corpse must be removed. At the same time, the train must be inspected and repaired to make sure that the train was not damaged before we could continue on the journey.

The train Li Mu and his friends are now riding on the Pacific Railway, and the Chinese have made great efforts to build this railway.

About ten years ago, in 1862, Lincoln, then President of the United States, approved the first bill to build the Pacific Railway, which stipulated that the United Pacific Railway and the Central Pacific Railway jointly undertake the construction of the transcontinental Pacific Railway. The starting point of the United Pacific Railway is Omaha, Nebraska, and the starting point of the Central Pacific Railway is Sacramento, California. The two companies pave the railway east-west.

The Pacific Railway is the first railway that runs across the North American continent. It was once rated by the British BBC as one of the seven industrial miracles in the world since the Industrial Revolution. The Pacific Railway has made great contributions to the economic development of the United States. In a sense, it is this railway that has made the future United States.

When Lincoln decided to build the Pacific Railway, he valued the significance of the Pacific Railway to the United States. At that time, the Civil War had already ignited, and this railway had important strategic significance for the northern United States.

But at the same time, there are also many difficulties in building the Pacific Railway. The Pacific Railway is more than 3,000 kilometers long and crosses the entire North American continent. It is the world's first intercontinental railway. This railway, which is regarded as a miracle in the minds of Americans, was extremely difficult under the conditions at that time. Among them, the steep terrain of Mount Syraine Nevada, with an altitude of 2,100 meters, was the most difficult to build the Pacific Railway.

The Central Pacific Railroad, which was in charge of the western section, initially hired Irish people. At that time, a large number of Irish people arrived in San Francisco with ships every day, but these people were unable to adapt to the dangerous and exhausting road construction projects. These Irish people were drunk, fought, and continued to demand increased wages. Even so, hundreds of Irish workers escaped every day, and the slow progress of the project could only be described as a snail - in the first two years, only 50 miles of steel rails were laid in the western section.

With no choice, Clauke, an executive of Central Pacific Railway, suggested hiring Chinese workers. This proposal was approved by senior executives of Central Pacific Railway, and the first batch of 50 Chinese workers joined Central Pacific Railway.

Almost beyond everyone's surprise, although these 50 Chinese workers all look short and thin, they are hard-working and brave when working. Moreover, Chinese workers are not as free and casual as white workers, and they like to drink and cause trouble. They are following the rules and regulations, are flexible in mind, and can learn a lot of work.

Soon, Central Pacific Railway Company, which tasted the sweetness, decided to recruit Chinese workers on a large scale.

In order to create convenient conditions for Chinese workers to immigrate to the United States, the Central Pacific Railway Company even lobbied the US government to sign the "Pu'anchen Treaty" with the Qing government in 1868. The treaty stipulates that China and the United States cross-recognize that citizens of the two countries have the right to voluntarily immigrate to each other's countries, and that Chinese people can go to the United States at will.

Look, the Qing people at that time had already enjoyed visa-free treatment.
