15. Merlin's new partner [47/100]
The next morning, Merlin arrived at the S.H.E.L.D. headquarters building in downtown New York as promised.
The specific location of this building is confidential, and from the outside, it does not look like a secret institution at all, but rather like more and more high-rise office buildings nowadays.
As far as Merlin knows, there are three office buildings like this in SHIELD in New York City alone, each building responsible for handling different matters.
Fury has always wanted to find a place around New York to build a real headquarters belonging to S.H.E.L.D., but it was difficult.
Not to mention the funds needed to build a new headquarters, it is difficult for Fury's proposal to be approved by Congress just because of the nature of the secret work.
But in 1995, things have changed.
At Pierce's proposal, SHIELD transformed from a National Defense Organization to an operation and logistics organization under the World Security Council.
In other words, the institution where Merlin is located begins to turn from the shadow to the front desk.
Secret work has become one, not the whole of S.H.I.E.L.D. As a large, ostensibly established international organization, it is not normal to have its own office building in the bustling New York City?
According to the recent rumor that Merlin heard, Fury's proposal for the new headquarters has begun to be discussed in Congress, and it is said that the possibility of approval is very high.
It is said that Fury has named the new headquarters building that has no shadow yet.
He was going to call it the Trident Building.
Well, this is very consistent with the naming style of Fury, who has always been a little bit second.
Of course, Merlin doesn't care about these things. It has been three years since he entered S.H.E.L.D., but he has worked in an office building for almost a handful of hours.
From the day Merlin became an agent, he seemed to be wandering outside the main structure of SHIELD.
Fury needed Merlin to deal with some sudden paranormal phenomena for him, and paranormal phenomena are well known to be mysterious. These matters that cannot be known to ordinary people need to be kept confidential. Even Merlin's name was sealed in those secret files.
Many staff members didn't even know that there was such a person in the senior management of SHIELD.
Those who really know Merlin's existence are very interested in this mysterious level 5 agent.
You know, the most advanced agent inside SHIELD, that is, Nick Fury himself, is only a level 6 agent.
Merlin, wearing a gray suit, was dressed like a young and promising senior salesman with a handbag and frameless glasses.
He walked into an elevator without any noticeable moment. The moment the elevator closed, he took out his identity card and brushed it in a secret groove of the elevator. A small green light lit up on the elevator panel, and Merlin's fingers rhythmically pressed 6 times.
"Clang"
With a light sound, the elevator that had been rising slowly immediately accelerated. After 40 seconds, Merlin arrived at the 34th floor of the building and was almost approaching the top floor.
"bite"
With a light sound, the elevator door opened.
A busy work scene appeared before Merlin.
Men and women in black uniforms were busy at work stations, walking around holding documents in their hands, or constantly typing on the keyboard with their hands and fingers.
In the conference rooms on both sides of the corridor, there are meetings being held. On the large TV hanging on the wall, there is a world map marked with many red dots, which seems to represent what is happening around the world at this time.
The early morning sun shines along the glass on the high floor into the huge office area, reflecting a busy scene.
To be honest, the first impression this place gives Merlin is not like a secret organization, but like a busy business company.
Meilin reached out and pushed his glasses, put his left hand in his trouser pocket, and his right hand held his handbag and walked towards the inside of the office.
This strange guy who suddenly appeared naturally attracted the attention of these internal affairs agents. Many people were watching him where Merlin walked. There was also a more vigilant guy who had already picked up the phone. But just as the agent was about to make a call, he was pressed on the phone with his hands.
"Sir Merlin."
A voice sounded behind Merlin, and the bald internal agent Japas Hitville shook his finger at the alert agent, then tidied up his clothes and walked quickly towards Merlin.
The latter turned his head and looked at him, and a smile appeared on his calm face.
"Long time no see, Hitville."
"Yeah, indeed."
Hitville also had a smile of reunion of old friends on his face. He made a "please" gesture to Merlin and whispered:
"I rarely see you here, sir. Come with me, your office is in front."
Hitville gestured to the others and signaled them to continue working. Then he led Merlin to a quieter high-end office area.
Merlin noticed that the nameplate on Hitville's chest had changed, he said:
"Are you a Level 2 Agent now?"
"Yes, I just promoted a month ago."
Hitville said:
"I still have my blessing. After participating in the operation to overthrow Kohler, I received internal commendations from the organization and then promoted. Of course, I am far from being a leader."
"You can't say that."
Merlin shrugged and said to Hitville:
"Although I rarely come here, I also know that the promotion of the internal agent is slower than the field agent. The ability to promote so quickly shows your ability. Speaking of which, Hitville, I still have a few assistants. Do you want to transfer to the field agent and try it? I think you are also suitable to run around the world with me."
"Uh, let's just forget it."
Although he knew Merlin was joking, Hitville subconsciously touched his bald head. It seemed that the last half-demon incident had a considerable psychological impact on him.
After walking for a few minutes, he took Merlin to an office by the window. The door of the office was marked with the name "Merlin Riley" and was called "Special Operations Supervisor".
Hitville turned around and said to Merlin:
"This is your office, sir. It has been a long time ago, but you haven't come over, it's been idle, but don't worry, we have someone who is responsible for cleaning twice a week, so it's clean, just like the new one."
Merlin nodded, took out his ID card, and gently swiped the door lock, and the office door opened.
"By the way, sir, I have already received the information from the director. Your assistant will come to your office to find you later."
Hitville looked at the watch and reminded him:
“About 15 minutes later.”
"Well, yes, I'm here for this today."
Merlin walked into the office and said without looking back:
"Go and do your business, Hitville, I might leave in the afternoon. To be honest, the atmosphere here is really depressing."
While complaining, he placed his handbag in the drawer of his desk.
Merlin reached out and opened the black computer in front of her. There was a blocked interface on the screen. Merlin needed to enter her identity ID and password. This thing was distributed together when he joined the company, but in the past three years, except for the period when he was in the office of the European branch, Merlin used it very few times.
It is now 1995, and the new generation of personal computers has begun to become increasingly popular. The latest computer in front of me is more advanced than Merlin's European branch.
He opened his email address first, and earlier today, Agent Hill had sent him a revised Imperial Organization evaluation report.
Merlin clicked on the report and picked up a glass of cold water from the water dispenser next to him. While drinking water, he began to browse the evaluation report of the magical reform.
Just as Fury reminded, this evaluation report, which was originally sufficient, had many secrets, and covered with specific photos, was modified into a large, general, specious article.
In the report written by Hill himself, only a trace of "secret" was shown at key positions. This document guides ordinary people to ignore the real core elements by exaggerating some external facts about the imperial organization and the imperial plan, as well as some outdated confidential information.
All information about Raton, kong and Skull Island has not appeared on the file.
Godzilla was known to many people because of the dismantling beams against the Kerry not long ago, so this mysterious monster could not be simply ignored.
Hill simply posted the truth about the Lawton incident during World War II and the 1954 Bikini Atoll nuclear bomb test to prove Godzilla's existence, and used a long speech to convince those security representatives that the Imperial Organization had always mastered the laws of Godzilla's activities.
Anyway, it took Meilin 10 minutes to read the report and he found that this thing was perfect.
Agent Hill's writing skills are far above Merlin. She spent one night perfectly completing Fury and Merlin's new requirements for the report.
After Merlin finished reading it, she felt that there was nothing he needed to modify or make suggestions for this thing.
So he thought about it for a moment and replied to Hill, with only four simple words on it:
"Great! Come on!"
And just as Merlin finished writing the email, the rhythmic knock on the door rang in the office.
"Come in!"
Merlin leaned against the office chair and shouted softly.
The next moment, a familiar face appeared in front of him.
Phil Colson, wearing a black suit, walked into the office with a little nervousness, but when he saw Merlin sitting on an office chair, the young man with a slightly tall hairline stood there.
Merlin was also stunned.
He didn't expect that Fury's new partner was actually Phil
It was his former younger brother.
Since the end of the Kerry incident, Merlin has been deliberately keeping a distance from Phil. He is worried that the dangerous work he is doing now will involve Phil.
He also planned to find an opportunity to give Fury some advice to arrange Phil into the internal affairs system, just like Hitville, to do some logistics and management affairs. But unexpectedly, Phil continued to choose the future of field agents and operation experts in a stubborn manner.
This made Merlin a little angry and a little panicked. Is this a coincidence, or is Fury discovering his potential relationship with Phil?
Logically speaking, this won't be possible. He clearly hid it very well and had never disclosed the existence of the Colsons family to anyone.
But Merlin is not angry now, and she is even more reluctant to reject her new assistant in person.
Because, behind Phil, there is a newcomer.
It was a woman, a young woman with black hair and about 1.70 in height. Her cheeks had obvious signs of oriental people, and she had short hair, and she was wearing a black uniform like Phil, and she looked very capable.
But those smart eyes mean that this is a very thoughtful newcomer.
Like Phil, she held the file bag in her hand and looked at her new boss with a hint of curiosity.
“Don’t you introduce yourself?”
Merlin held a pen in his hand and lightly tapped on the table. After his glasses, his eyes became sharp, and he looked at the two young people in front of him, like an interviewer.
He acted like he didn't know Phil at all.
But Phil was not panicked. He glanced at the lady beside him. These two people should be friends whom the secret service academy knew. The lady nodded to Phil as if she was encouraging him.
Phil took a deep breath, placed the file bag in his hand on Merlin's desk, then took a step back and began to introduce himself.
"Hello, Chief Merlin, my name is Philip.j. Colson. I'm from."
Merlin listened carefully to Phil's self-introduction on the surface, but in fact, she was thinking about Phil's stay or not.
As one of the only level 5 agents in S.H.I.E.D., he certainly has the right to refuse Phil's entry. He is also somewhat sure that he can convince Fury to transfer Phil to civilian position.
But doing so is risky, which will make Fury doubt his intentions. Merlin knows very well how smart and hard to deceive a soul hidden under Fury's appearance.
Secondly, with his understanding of Phil's personality, even if he fired him, Phil would still find a way to continue to become a field agent. He had a stubborn personality since he was a child, hiding under the appearance that always smiled.
People, that's it. The more you deny someone, the more they want to try harder to prove themselves.
So instead of letting Phil follow other field agents, it is better to put him at your own hands.
This way, it is much more convenient whether it is protection or training.
Merlin's eyes changed for a moment, and he seemed to have made up his mind.
He reached out and knocked on the table, interrupting Phil's introduction. He raised his head and looked at Phil, and he said briefly:
"It's OK. Welcome to my Agent Team, Phil Colson."
"Now, please introduce your lady around you to me what your name is?"
The girl sitting on the side probably didn't expect that Merlin would ask her so directly. The expression on her face was a little surprised, but soon, she immediately stood up and replied in a calm and crisp voice:
"Report to the sir, my name is Mei, Melinda Mei."
"Well, tell me about your own experience."
Merlin picked up Melinda's file while listening to her introduction.
But he just looked down and his eyes changed suddenly. On Melinda's file and in the recommended position, there was a name he was very familiar with.
Page Carter!
This girl was actually recommended by Ms. Carter, just like him and Fury!
