16. Difficult Decisions (Part 1)

The next morning, SHIELD Director Fury appeared in his office on time.

He checked his work schedule today. Well, it was rare that there was no meeting required for him to attend, which meant that Fury might be able to take a break from his busy schedule today and get off work on time.

This made Director Ludantou feel very happy.

Become an agent.

There is still a big difference between managing a special agent organization.

The former can also do tasks occasionally, while the latter's work is to sit in the office.

Merlin occasionally performs some important tasks personally, but Fury hasn't been on the field for almost ten years.

Even during the most intense period of the battle with Hydra, Fury still sat in the office very peacefully.

He had to do that, he had to stay in this building, be a mascot, and stabilize people's hearts.

If one day, even the director of SHIELD has to pull out his gun and go into battle, it means that the organization is really about to end.

More than ten minutes later, the ruthless signature machine Nick Fury finally processed a bunch of documents that needed to be signed.

He looked around and secretly took out a portable electronic scale from the filing cabinet behind him, placed it on the ground, then took off his shoes and stood on it.

Soon, a number that made Furymeng frown appeared on the electronic scale.

"Oh, I'm fat again."

Fury patted his stomach, and he hid the scale with some sadness, then moved his waist and walked to the office window.

He looked at the cold and serious face reflected in the mirror.

That solidified expression is like the whole world owe money to that face.

Fury reached out, pinched his face, and then gave a big smile to the glass.

The director of SHIELD, Nick Fury, who has always been steady, occasionally gets off the line. Of course, most agents cannot see their director's funny appearance.

"Bang, bang"

The knock on the door sounded in the office, and Fury quickly adjusted his expression and returned to his original indifference.

He coughed lightly, put his hands behind his back and said:

"Come in."

The next moment, the office door was pushed open, and Alexander Pierce, who was leaning on a cane, walked into Fury's office tremblingly.

"Pearce?"

Fury looked back at the old boss in surprise and said:

"Why did you come to me?"

"I'll come and take a look."

Pierce sat on the sofa with a smile.

The chairman of the World Security Council is already very old. Compared with more than ten years ago, Pierce seems to have become old now.

Wrinkles appeared on his forehead, his originally gray hair became completely white and sparse, and his waist, which was always straight, bent down.

Even the expression on his face turned into the kindness and kindness that an old man should have.

Only those eyes seemed to be as bright and as sharp as before.

“Is Merlin not here?”

Pierce sat on the sofa with her hands on her cane and watched Fury make coffee for him personally, the old man asked:

"I just went to his office and he was on vacation today?"

"That's not."

Fury replied:

"He went to do a very important 'business' and it might take some time to come back."

"Oh, that's it."

Pierce nodded, and he said:

"This is great. He is still as responsible as I remember. He never refuses the responsibilities he should shoulder. Well, I finally read it right."

"You always say these things to me whenever you come."

Fury walked to the table with two cups of coffee, placed a cup of coffee in front of Pierce, and sat on the sofa on the other side. He said to his old friend:

"I had doubts before that Merlin was your illegitimate child for more than ten years. I have never heard of any disappointment in him from you."

"Because he never disappointed us."

Pierce said with a smile:

"Since I met him, he has not done anything to the point. No matter how difficult it is, he has helped you clear out the Hydra hiding in S.H.E.D.."

"Those damn bastards hid in our shadows for decades, but in the end they were exposed by a young man."

"I didn't say he was bad either."

Fury spread his hands and said:

"Merlin has always been my best assistant."

"So, how about letting him be the chief?"

Pierce suddenly said:

"Let Merlin take over your position and really start commanding S.H.E.L.D."

"A younger leader may make SHIELD more vibrant and take more responsibilities in the field of world security affairs."

"He went to Switzerland for a meeting. My old friends all gave Merlin a good review. Everyone admired this young man who acted more than language."

"Young man? He's almost 40"

Fury was not overwhelmed by Pierce's sudden topic.

He picked up the coffee and said to Pierce:

"Besides, it's not impossible to let Merlin replace the director. He has proved his ability in the position of deputy director, but what about me? Pierce, are you going to let me retire like this?"

"Of course not!"

Pierce blinked at Fury like an old naughty boy, and said:

“I plan to recommend you to the World Security Council”

"It's just like when I was recommended by Ms. Carter. You have to walk my path again. Maybe your relationship with Merlin will be like my relationship with you now."

"this"

Fury was a little hesitant, but he was not very resistant to entering politics. He worked as an agent all his life, and it would be nice to change roles when he was old.

But he was still a little hesitant, he said:

"It's a little too sudden, right?"

"Suddenly? No, not suddenly."

Pierce took a sip of coffee and said to Fury:

"Your qualifications are completely sufficient, and SHIELD, as a subordinate body of the World Security Council, is already in the same system. It is normal for promotion to be within the Council, and no one will object."

“No one is more qualified to serve as a supervisor for S.H.E.L.D. and other institutions in the system than you.”

The old man shook his neck, he breathed a sigh of relief, and turned the topic into a tone of chatting between friends, he said:

"Look at me, Fury, I'm old. I have to walk with crutches now. I can't sleep for 5 hours a night. Last week I twisted my waist and fell asleep during the meeting yesterday. I'm already a little overwhelmed."

"Maybe in a few years, I'll die."

Pierce said to Fury calmly:

"I have to arrange my funeral while I still have time."

"You have sss serum in your hand."

Fury said:

"You don't want to use it yourself"

"That thing has sequelae, Fury."

Pierce persuaded:

"It will make you Alzheimer's disease one day. I don't want to die as a confused person. I advise you not to use that thing."

"Birth, old age, sickness and death are the laws of nature and the order of nature. We should abide by it and maintain it, not break it."

"Okay, order is already your faith, so I won't argue with you."

Fury rubbed his chin and said:

"But I have to think about this for a while, and I can't answer you immediately."

"Pearce, even if I am willing to obey your arrangements and hand over the work with Merlin, it will take a long time for the director of SHIELD to complete the alternation of power."

"So you guys should do it as soon as possible."

Pierce stood up, he shook his waist, and he said to Fury:

"When I can help you with something, hurry up and finish it. Okay, I'm leaving now, you can keep busy."

"Um."

Fury got up and wanted to give Pierce away, but just as the office door opened, Fury's assistant Agent Hill happened to walk towards the director's office with a stack of documents in his arms.

When Pierce passed by, he saw the name on the cover of the document.

Allabray, umbrella

These keywords made Pierce's eyes squint.

The old man suddenly reached out and patted his forehead, as if he had forgotten something important. He turned around and said to Fury:

"Ah, I'm really old and there's something else. I want to tell you, it won't disturb your work, right?"

"No, no."

Fury didn't notice anything, and he and Pierce returned to the office, and Agent Hill placed the documents on the director's desk, turned around and left.

Two more old men were left in the office.

"A few days ago, the Central Park incident, that out of control monster"

Pierce sat on the couch, watching Fury pick up the papers, he said:

"How was the investigation result of that matter?"

"Why did you suddenly care about this?"

Fury asked casually while looking at the documents related to the Umbrella Company:

"I thought you would care about something higher."

"I don't want it either. Fury, I'm an old man. I have limited energy, but there are always some things you can't avoid."

Pierce sighed and said:

"The Sky Eye will be seriously injured in that operation. They had a commando that was almost wiped out. You know that organization was directly obeying the White House."

"So some old friends beat me the lawsuit. They said that SHIELD's combat units hindered the commando's operations, causing serious damage to elite soldiers."

"I personally don't believe this, but I still have to understand the situation."

"Hmph! They still have the face to mention this!"

Fury's expression became cold, and he said to Pierce:

"It is true that our agents stopped the Sky Eye Commando from operating, but the reason is that those guys are disregarding their lives!"

"Our investigation into that matter is over."

"More than 15 witnesses saw the entire process of the commando of the Sky Eye Society shooting at innocent people. I know that the commando on the Sky Eye Society is very diverse, but I am bluntly speaking, they are really dead."

"Our agents saved at least 27 innocent people in that critical moment, and he is the real hero!"

"Oh? Is that true?"

Pierce didn't care about the truth about this matter at all. Speaking of this matter, he just asked again:

"Then what's the truth about this matter?"

"I heard that it was the remnants of Abstergo who were developing some damn illegal biological projects? Why are these bastards just restless?"

"Fry, you have to spend some effort on this aspect, so that those ambitious people can have the opportunity to play."

“We’ve been working hard, Pierce.”

Fury said helplessly:

"There are many projects that we have blocked over the years for illegal biological experiments, but people driven by profits or ambitions have always existed."

"The bio-fortification program has been a very popular trend since the birth of Captain America and is normal to continue to ban it."

"What's more, this is not as simple as you think, Pierce."

Fury said:

"The news you got was fake, and it wasn't done by Abstergo's people."

"Um?"

Pierce's eyes widened and showed a puzzled expression, he said:

"Not them? Who is that?"

"Sorry, I can't tell you, Pierce."

Fury showed an apology and said to Pierce:

"I can't just talk nonsense until things are concluded, but if you do care about it, then after that, I'll hand you a report of the investigation."

"Uh, it's okay, it's okay."

Pierce waved his hand quickly and said with a smile:

"It's me that I was abrupt. Look at me, I used to be an agent, but now I have forgotten the confidentiality regulations."

"I shouldn't ask about these things."

The old man stood up and said to Fury:

"Since the truth of the matter has been found out, I'll leave first. You can continue to work hard. Don't forget to send a copy of the investigation records of those bastards who are careless to the White House."

"Block their mouths and don't let them bother me, the old man again."

"Oh, by the way, I have a new idea about the 'insight plan' and maybe make up for it."

"Pearce"

Fury stood up and sent Pierce to the office door. He interrupted the old man helplessly, and he said to his old boss:

"We've talked about this topic a lot, and I know you appreciate the idea and effect of the Insight Plan. You've always wanted to advance it, but Merlin and I think the plan is lacking."

“We have many better ways to protect order, just look at the kind of serious flaws in the program.”

"Um."

Pierce nodded silently, a light flashed in his eyes, and he said with regret:
Chapter completed!
