Chapter IX Dual Military Status

The United States in the 1940s was the world's most developed industrial country. After the outbreak of the Pearl Harbor, factories across the United States opened their full capacity to produce wartime materials. Aircraft carriers and destroyers, fighter jets, bombers, tanks and jeeps, and a large number of artillery, firearms and ammunition were continuously produced. They were loaded with free wheels from docks on the West Coast and the East Coast toward Britain, the Soviet Union, India and every place that needed U.S. aid supplies.

China's ports have all fallen into the last land channel of rival foreign aids. The Yunnan-Vietnam Railway has also been interrupted. Only air channels can be left to use American supplies to transport them to India first, then loaded on C47 transport planes and transported them to Kunming through the dangerous Himalayas Hump route. Then loaded them to various war zones across the country.

Every barrel of gasoline and every box of bullets was sent through hardships and was sent in the name of renting or aid. The Chinese government did not need to spend a penny on it. These rare materials would appear in the black market the next day. Americans are aware of these situations, but they turned a blind eye to the overall situation.

Lieutenant Colonel Chanders seemed to have obtained Nirvana after experiencing the torture of the detention camp and the famine behind enemy lines. He became selfless and selfless, especially in the distribution of aid supplies. He was deeply trusted by Lieutenant General Stilwell, the immediate boss.

The distribution of US aid supplies Stilwell is the real master of his own country, but he spent most of his time in India or Kunming to command the army to allocate fighter brigades. This kind of matters such as gasoline, food, and fodder must be handed over to the quarantine officer to take charge, so Lieutenant Colonel Chanders became the person with the right to sign and make decisions.

Lieutenant Colonel and Tang Enbo have a grudge, but it is not realistic to say that a drop of gasoline is not given when you hear that you canned food. After all, this is aid for the US affairs. Tang Enbo's troops are fighting in Henan, which is the front line battlefield. Henan is lost to Tongguan and cannot protect it. It is dangerous. So what you should give is still to give. However, Chanders asked Tang Enbo to sign and follow up every barrel of gasoline. For this reason, several lieutenants were sent to Tang Enbo's supervisor. In short, they tried every means to find trouble for Tang Enbo.

Tang Enbo was Chiang Kai-shek's beloved general and sent a special trip to complain, but Chiang Kai-shek had no choice but to even he could not order Chanders, and the commissioner himself was also in extreme pain and anxiety because the hateful US Chief of Staff Stilwell was determined to put the Chinese team under his command and wanted to put the chairman under his command. This was something that could not be allowed.

Military power is the most important thing in China. Losing military power is no matter how high your prestige is, it is useless. Chiang Kai-shek, who was born as a principal of Huangpu, understood this deeply. If he had not mastered the Huangpu student army, what would he do to compete with veterans like Hu Hanmin and Wang Jingwei for the first time.

The head can be cut off and blood can flow. Military power must not be given, especially to an American.

China needs the US material assistance from the US, the US needs the Chinese battlefield to hold back the Japanese forces. Both sides have common goals, but they have been bumpy and bumpy talks. The United States originally promised to maintain 500 fighter jets in China. 5,000 tons of supplies per month, but the Air Force did not have enough supplies. The US side decided that the Chinese people have no right to participate in the distribution of materials. This made the Commission very distressed.

Stilwell is a stubborn old American man. He despises the chairman very much and even gave the chairman privately a nickname called Peanuts Chiang Kai-shek is not unaware of this, but he still maintains his demeanor on the surface because he needs US aid so much. This level of demand even exceeds the United States' demand for China.

So the chairman could only coax Tang Enbo away by doing it perfunctorily

When she returned to the inner room, Soong Mei-ling asked if Stilwell made you angry again when she saw him frowning. Chiang Kai-shek said that Stilwell was more than just Stilwell Americans said freedom and equality on the surface, in fact, they were not equal at all. Just want China to help them unconditionally but don’t want to pay the price. It’s really hateful.

Soong Mei-ling thought for a while and said: "We need a contact person with good relations with the US to lubricate the bad relationship between the two sides."

Chiang Kai-shek said: "Isn't Ziwen in the United States? He is a top student at Harvard University who is proficient in English yet is helpless."

Soong Mei-ling said: "Ziwen is not a soldier and a soldier, so he has the strength to deal with him. I have a choice. He graduated from West Point Military Academy and is proficient in English. Stilwell has been in 20 years of friendship. Lieutenant Colonel Chanders is a roommate in West Point. He has a life-saving grace to ask him out of the mountain and will surely open up the situation."

Chiang Kai-shek snorted coldly: "I know who you are talking about but I don't know if he wants it."

Soong Mei-ling said: "Zikun is a person with some temper but a temper, and often has real skills. Those villains with no temper are quite powerful. They are a lot of people who are not timid. It's useful. I think Zikun is willing to come out of the mountain."

Chiang Kai-shek sighed: "For the sake of the country, I have to do this."

...

Lieutenant Colonel Chanders did not forget that it was Chen Zikun and Jiangbei's elders. They saved food to rescue themselves. The grace of water should be repaid with each other, let alone life-saving grace.

A US C47 transport plane at the Jiangbei Countryside Field Airport swaying and landed. The military transport plane transformed from DC3 passenger plane was sturdy and strong. The tires were huge and boring on the simple runway. It slowly stopped. A large number of pale and thin soldiers surrounded it and moved a heavy cardboard box with foreign words from the cabin. A soldier was dizzy because he had not eaten enough. He had no strength to pay attention. The cardboard box landed and rolled out dozens of iron cans from it.

Colorful pictures of meat cubes printed on colorful canned paper are eaten

A few hungry soldiers who couldn't stand it, pulled out the bayonet and pried open the can, hurriedly took out the pink minced meat piece inside and stuffed it into their mouths. The smell of meat made them burst into tears.

Not only do you eat meat, but you can't eat such good meat during the Chinese New Year

This is a gift from Lieutenant Colonel Chanders for a whole plane of SPAM lunch canned meat. This food is pork, starch and salt and spices made of very greasy and salty but very hungry

The soldiers who ate lunch meat soon squatted on the ground and vomited. Their weak stomachs could not stand the stimulation of this greasy food and showed a violent reaction.

A colonel from the Military Commission came with the US military transport plane. He came to Chen Zikun with a special trip. This was a letter written by Chairman Jiang. The words were sincere and sincere. Chen Zikun was originally a little resentful, but when he thought that the conflict between China and the United States would affect the overall situation of the anti-Japanese war, he agreed without hesitation. But before going to Chongqing, he had to do something.

The carrying capacity of C47 is 26,000 pounds, equivalent to 28,000 kilograms of lunch meat. He sent life-saving food to the hungry Jiangbei. Chen Zikun ordered people to put the lunch meat into a big pot and cook it into porridge with sorghum rice to the victims. This food is more protein and fat than simple grains.

Seeing the victims eating the soup cooked by lunch meat with their own eyes, Chen Zikun put down the stone in his heart and gave the command to Chen Qilin to return to Chongqing on C47

After Chen Zikun arrived, the Military Commission immediately issued an order to restore his active position. He is still the new position of a first-level general in the Army. He is the chairman of the Sino-US Liaison Committee. The Military Commission can report directly to the Chairman at any time.

Shortly after the appointment, Stilwell flew from Kunming to Chongqing to meet Chiang Kai-shek to streamline the troops and replace the incompetent commander. Chiang Kai-shek patiently introduced him to the new Director Chen Zikun of the Sino-US Liaison Committee.

"Oh it's you." Stilwell was very surprised when he saw Chen Zikun. The two shook hands first and then hugged Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling looked at each other and smiled and felt that this move was right.

But the facts prove that Stilwell is a soft and hard-working stubborn person, and he does not recognize the legality of the China-US Liaison Committee.

"The Chinese theater has been established. Your country has military delegations and diplomats in our country. I don't think there is still a need to add institutions." Stilwell refused Chiang Kai-shek's request without hesitation.

However, he turned his mind and looked at Chen Zikun: "Chen can work in my staff and serve as my senior assistant."

Chiang Kai-shek breathed a sigh of relief and just put someone in. It doesn’t matter what the position does not matter. Of course, the US does not recognize it. It doesn’t matter if it is its own unilateral diplomatic agency.

So Chen Zikun transformed into a senior assistant to the chief of staff of the Allied Chinese theater.

That night, Stilwell refused all social engagements and invited Chen Zikun and Lieutenant Colonel Chanders to have a meal at his apartment. Spam lunch, meat, macaroni, coffee and red wine. The meal was simple and warm.

Stilwell said: "Chan, I tell you the truth about peanuts. I know very well that he wants to get along with the troubled waters, but he doesn't understand you. You are a real American. From your heart to your body, you won't be like those borers. What I said is right? My old friend."

Chen Zikun said: "Joe My accusation is to coordinate your relationship with China, in fact, I am willing to do this. If you are always having trouble, it will only make the Japanese happy."

"No, no, no, you don't understand what I mean. I don't object to having a good relationship with Chinese people, including peanuts, but only if they have to do what I said. Your appearance will alleviate the current tension. But you are appearing as an American and speaking from our standpoint."

Chen Zikun was puzzled: "But I am a Chinese-class person."

Stilwell said: "It was before, it's not now, I'll call you to join the US military From now on, you'll be a US Army officer."

Chen Zikun said: "Joe, you won't let me be your second-class orderly, right?"

Stilwell said: "You are a Western Point dropout and have not been awarded the rank of the U.S. Army and have not joined the reserve service. So I can only start from the lowest level. But as your commander, I have the power to promote your rank based on your ability and performance. So you start from the captain. I believe that when the war is over, you will wear the general star."
