Chapter 86 Ceremony Fourteen

After the best original movie script, it is naturally the best adapted movie script. The award presenter is Jin Yong and Qiong Yao, who are unmatched in the Chinese literature circle. Not only that, these two are also distant relatives who have been associated with each other - Jin Yong's cousin is Qiong Yao's aunt.

Jin Yong was in full swing around 19RU, and the performance of the Ming Pao newspaper group was booming. Taiwan lifted the ban on his martial arts novels, and mainland officials also repeatedly gave him green branches. TV series adapted by his novels such as Michelle's version of "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" and Adam Cheng's version of "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" all caused a sensation in Hong Kong. Thousands of people competed to watch it. Movies such as "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" directed by Chu Yuan broke the box office records in Taiwan, and even the movies sold at the cinema, which was unprecedented.

Qiong Yao was a little embarrassed. In 1976, she cooperated with Ping Xintao, the boss of Crown Publishing House, and established Superstar Film Company. She filmed two novels adapted every year, which were released during the Spring Festival. Unexpectedly, the good times did not last long. In the late 1970s, the "living room, dining room, and cafe" movies that had been popular in Taiwan for more than ten years suddenly became unpopular. The critics criticized her novels and film backgrounds, the characters were not in the world, and misled the teenagers' views on love. The heroine Lin Qingxia was once again plagued by the emperor and had no intention of acting. The eight-year extramarital affair between Qiong Yao and Ping Xintao was repeatedly exposed by the media, which seriously affected her popularity. Therefore, by 1979, Superstar Film Company had already been in a turmoil and lost a lot of money.

No matter how criticized the work is, Jin Yong and Qiong Yao are both one of the most successful literati entrepreneurship in modern China. Who wouldn’t envy both fame and fortune? Even if literati are despised and disdainful, they are extremely yearning for it. Therefore, when the two appeared, they were very popular and applause was not inferior to Zhang Ailing.

"Good evening everyone, I'm Cha Liangyong."

"I'm Qiong Yao."

"It's a great honor to attend this event tonight. This is a movie event. When I was young, I also entered the film industry and wrote scripts for them at Great Wall Film Company. However, writing scripts was very hard, so I ran away in just a few times." Jin Yong's words caused a burst of laughter, and he continued: "I feel very embarrassed to invite me to present the awards to the Golden Star Awards, because I am not as hard-working and serious as Ms. Qiong Yao, and I adapted the work into a movie by myself. I'm very lazy. Whoever likes my novels, I always say ok, take it and edit it yourself."

"Mr. Jin Yong is too modest. Your works are popular in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Countless readers are fascinated by it. The film company is waiting in line for adaptation." Qiong Yao has probably been attacked too much recently, full of resentment and complained: "I am different. No one likes my novel now, so no one helps me adapt it. I have to do it myself, and I work hard and labor. I really envy Mr. Jin Yong. I can sit firmly on the Diaoyutai and watch the clouds rise and fall."

"Actually, I think that's because you have too high requirements for adapting your own works." Jin Yong is an old man and said versatilely: "It's harder to adapt a novel into a script than an original script. Why? Because the original script is to build a building on a flat ground, you can build any way. The adapted script is to decorate in a ready-made building. Every resident has his own requirements and to meet everyone's ideas, so it's very difficult. Ms. Qiong Yao dares to modify her novels in person. This kind of courage is something I don't have, and she also makes it very good. After reading the novel, readers will go to watch movies, and after watching the movies, the audience will go to read novels again. It's really amazing."

"Mr. Jin Yong is joking. I don't have that good ability." Qiong Yao probably felt that he was too ruthless just now, so she gave in, then changed her sight and said, "Mr. Jin Yong, you and I are both members of the jury, but after we vote, we don't know who won the prize. Why not guess before the award, who will fall in this trophy?"

This is the first time that the jury members talked about the inside story of the review. The audience was curious and sat upright and paid attention to it.

"According to the rules of the Golden Star Awards, I can't tell everyone who voted for that vote." Jin Yong said with a smile: "But based on the reactions of the judges during the movie watching, I think it should be the mainland movie "Little Flower" that won the award. What do you think?"

"I think it's director Chu Yuan. Miss Zhang Ailing told me that she likes the original and adaptation of "The Dream of the Little Building". Of course, I also like this movie very much."

"Chu Yuan is a very powerful director, and I like his works very much." Looking up, Jin Yong also held Chu Yuan's hand in hand and said, "Let's put the suspense here, let's take a look at the list of shortlisted movies first."

"The best adapted film script at the first Hong Kong Film Awards, the shortlisted are:

Chu Yuan, "The Remaining Dream of the Small Building"...

Qin Yu, "Full Moon Scimitar"...

Previous article, "Little Flower"...

Zheng Quan, Jin De-sun, "The Gunshots of the Bureau of Secrets"...

Zhong Ling, Hu Jinquan, "Legend of the Mountain"..."

"Chu Yuan, is the very popular director in Taiwan?" Wang Yang asked: "I heard that every movie has a box office of over 10 million in Taiwan?"

"Yes." Shen Chong nodded and introduced: "This person is a versatile person, including Cantonese, Mandarin, costume, fashion, martial arts, and romance films, and he is very talented and talented director."

After pausing, he said again: "Old Wang, actually that Qin Yu is Chu Yuan's pseudonym. He occupied two seats on this shortlist."

"Since that's the case, why use a pseudonym on the shortlist?"

"It is very difficult to collect all the film materials released by the three regions of the Taiwan Strait within one year." Shen Chong explained patiently: "The Preparatory Committee for the Academy Awards can only produce a list of shortlisted film workers based on the subtitles printed on the movie copy, so as to avoid many unnecessary troubles. If one crew member checks the real name and pseudonym, it will be impossible."

Wang Yang nodded and said, "The objective conditions limit, so it can only be like this."

As soon as he finished speaking, he heard Qiong Yao announce the winner: "The Best Adapted Film Screenplay of the First Hong Kong Film Awards, Chu Yuan, "The Remnant Dream of the Small Building"."

"Now Chu Yuan finally got proud." After applauding, Shen Chong said to Wang Yang: "Old Wang, you know, the Hong Kong film industry only recognizes money, not art, and not education. Only directors with very good box office results have the capital to shoot their favorite movies. Chu Yuan has been filming martial arts movies for three or four years, earning tens of millions of dollars for Shaw Brothers Film Company. Last year, he finally got the opportunity to shoot a movie he liked. As a result, the box office of "The Dream of the Little Building" he made only more than 100,000 Hong Kong dollars, and he would have lost to death. If it weren't for his excellent box office results before, he might have been unemployed now."

"The box office is so poor, which means the audience doesn't agree with it." Wang Yang asked in confusion, "How can he win the award?"

"The quality of the movie "The Dream of the Little Building" is very good, mainly because it is not well promoted." Chen Chong felt that he couldn't explain it clearly for a while, so he had to say vaguely: "Hong Kong is different from the mainland. The mainland is hungry and people watch it if it is a movie. However, Hong Kong has two or three hundred movies released every year, and the supply is oversupply, so publicity is very important. If the publicity is not good, no one will watch it."

When Wang Yang heard this, he thought something, while Chen Chong watched Chu Yuan come to the stage to receive the award with interest. He and these two award presenters had some connections.

Chu Yuan's original name was Zhang Baojian. His father Zhang Huoyou was a very famous Cantonese opera and film actor in the 1940s and 1950s. He was known as the "Four Big Students" of Hong Kong Cantonese films together with Wu Chufan, Zhang Ying and Li Qing. Chu Yuan entered the film industry very early under the influence of his father and wrote the movie script under the pen name "Qin Yu".

In 19UU, when Chu Yuan was 2019, he directed his first film in his life, "Pity of the World's Parents' Heart", which is the most classic movie in the era of Cantonese fragments. In 1999, Hong Kong Radio and Wen Wei Po jointly held a "Hong Kong Classic Film Election" event, which consisted of thirteen film groups to select 50 Chinese-language films that were released in Hong Kong, and have achieved success in artistic or entertainment, and have a profound impact on Hong Kong's livelihood, culture and international status as candidate films. Audience and readers voted to select ten classic movies. Among them, "Pity of the World's Parents' Heart" ranked ninth and was the only U0s movie among the top ten. It shows the quality of the film and the high talent of Chu Yuan's film.

However, in the 1960s, Cantonese films were shoddy and low in quality, and the audience was lost in large numbers. By about 70 years, they were no longer able to survive. Cantonese film companies went bankrupt one after another, and the Cathay Pacific Film Company, which Chu Yuan belonged to, also closed down in 1970, renting the studio and theater chain to the newly established Jiahe.

Chu Yuan made many RU movies in the past ten years from UU to 70, and is quite famous. He had filmed a love movie called "Yu Lou Chunxiao", which made Qin Xianglin, a newcomer who had been engaged in martial arts films. So a Taiwanese film dealer came to him and asked him to film "Deep Courtyard" adapted by Qiong Yao's novel. Chu Yuan was quite excited at the time. Not only did he go to Taiwan to inspect the actors and outdoor scenes in advance, but after returning to Hong Kong, he also worked overtime to shoot Cathay's last Cantonese movie. Unexpectedly, he had just finished the work he had in hand, and he said that "Deep Courtyard" had been on film for several days, so you should not go to Taiwan again...

This was a bolt from the blue, and Chu Yuan was deceived, so he was unemployed for more than half a year. It was not until the end of the year that he defected to Shaw Brothers and returned to work.

I don’t know if Qiong Yao was involved in the change of players on the spot back then…

After two years of quiet dating between Shaw Brothers, Chu Yuan made a big splash in 1973 with "Seventy-Two Tenants" and surpassed Bruce Lee to the annual box office rankings. He was about to become a big director. Unfortunately, five movies he made in succession, whether it was a remake of popular TV series or a remake of popular novels, each of which was a big loss, and he was crying and had no face. Shaw Brothers had always only recognized the box office and not the person. By 1975, he had no drama to shoot and was refrigerated.

Then Chu Yuan hid at home and thought about it, and finally figured out two movie truths - in this world, there are only two movies that are always watched by people, one is comedy and the other is action movies. He is not good at comedy, so he set his sights on martial arts novels and began to adapt Jin Yong's novels. Starting from "The Legend of the Condor Heroes", "The Legend of Condor Heroes", "The Book and Sword Revenge", etc., and wrote the outline and story summary of the division, he went to find Run Run Shaw, who asked him every time.

He went to a Shanghai restaurant for dinner, read the script while eating, and shot him after reading it. In this cycle, Chu Yuan revised Jin Yong's novels and did not get the opportunity to film, so he had to change Gu Long. After more than nine months, he said to Ni Kuang, "The Meteor Butterfly Sword is derived from "The Godfather". If you want to remake, go and shoot this one." After getting the opportunity to film "The Meteor Butterfly Sword", he finally became a hit and became the hottest martial arts director in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

In short, neither Jin Yong nor Qiong Yao were Chu Yuan's destiny. Chu Yuan in turn was quite helpful to the careers of these two. Qin Xianglin, one of the "Two Qins", became the protagonist of Qiong Yao's movies. He filmed "The Finale of the Legend of the Condor Heroes", which made Jin Yong's novels popular in Taiwan.

Chu Yuan is the only person among Shaw Brothers' "Four Famous Directors" who remained unchanged. Among the four movies filmed in 1979, except for the poor performance of "The Lou Can Dream", the other three martial arts movies were well-known. Among them, "The Two Sexy" received more than 4 million yuan, ranking in the top ten in the annual box office rankings, and it also broke Shaw Brothers' box office record in previous years in Taiwan. Therefore, he went up to win the awards, and the audience was very proud of their face and the applause was very lively.

"Thank you, thank you." Chu Yuan took the trophy from Jin Yong's hand, held it in his hand, and said with emotion: "I have been filming for many years and have made almost 0 movies. "The Dream of the Little Building" is one of my personal favorite works. I didn't expect the box office to be so bad. Fortunately, it was recognized by the jury and did not make it unknown. This award means a lot to me."

"I hope that the holding of the Golden Horse Awards will give Hong Kong literary and artistic films some space to survive. Don't let everyone film movies just for the box office. After filming, people are tired and exhausted. In the end, nothing can be filmed well. Movies are for people to relax and entertain, and are a tool for dreaming. They should not be produced in batches like canned fish."

"Of course, this is just my personal small complaint. It is definitely not a complaint about Uncle Six. The Shaw family has a big business and has to support thousands of employees. They have to pay millions of water and electricity bills every month. If you don't try your best to film, you have no choice but to do your business. Moreover, I can keep filming and filming this "Little Building Remnant Dream" is also a chance given by Uncle Six. I am very grateful to him. Without him, there would be no Hong Kong movies now."
