Macau TV is popular!
In just one week, after the promotion of cable TV operators in various places, Macau TV quickly became popular in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
The most popular one is in Taiwan, because it can only receive the third one here for a long time, and even illegal TV stations can only broadcast some pirated movies and TV series. Taiwanese young people can only describe Macau TV programs as crazy.
Of course, there is another important reason why Macau TV’s programs are accepted by Taiwanese people. 80% of the programs on Macau TV use Mandarin, which is what Taiwan calls Mandarin.
Macau TV's audience is the Chinese group in the entire East Asia, while Nanyang and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are relatively mixed, including Mandarin, Minnan, Cantonese and other types. For example, Minnan, Cantonese is extremely popular in Singapore, Malaysia and other places, and is the daily language of the people.
After detailed consideration and discussion, the production team of Macau TV's program decided to set the main language of the program to Mandarin. The reason is very simple. As a national official language for decades, basically all Chinese can understand it.
Especially in the 1960s and early 1970s, whether it was a movie made in Hong Kong or Taiwan, the lines and dialogues were all in Mandarin dialogues, and the audience in Southeast Asia still watched them with relish.
Until "A Chinese Ghost Story" was released in Hong Kong, less than a week, the number of families watching Macau TV in Taiwan exceeded 80,000, which was almost like a virus.
This situation quickly attracted the attention of relevant departments in Taiwan, but after investigation, it was found that Macau TV was all entertainment programs and did not involve anti-kmt publicity, so it basically turned a blind eye.
Taiwan has been in chaos in recent years. There are kmt factional struggles inside, while the US imperialists are forcing the process of democracy every day. There are also a group of Green Party who are like clowns playing street politics, but intellectuals are still joining in the fun. The Taiwanese authorities are almost out of control over the management of the people, so how can they be in the mood to deal with a satellite TV station that plays entertainment programs?
The Macau TV program had a great impact on the ratings of the Third Taiwan Taiwan. The Third Taiwan quickly reported to the News Bureau, and the News Bureau then negotiated with the law enforcement department. The result was that illegal limited TV stations in Taipei City and some areas of Taipei County were banned, but there was nothing wrong with Taipei's accidental areas. In many places, even the police chief's homes had illegal closed routes. It was a big deal!
The banned Oriental Entertainment Group returned to Taiwan in this way and was quickly accepted by the Taiwanese public.
Macau TV has to play three TV series a day, one in the morning, afternoon and evening. In addition, there are three episodes in the morning and afternoon. There are two episodes in the evening. There are two episodes in the evening. There are two episodes in the evening. There are a classic movie in the evening, as well as eight fixed programs including music, film news, gossip, variety shows, plus a Portuguese news requested by the Portuguese government.
There are many celebrities joining the program, but the production cost is actually not high, because those participating in the recording of the program are all signed artists from Oriental Culture and Entertainment Group, and you can just give them some notice fee. It’s not that Kang Jianfei is too stingy, but for these celebrities, they are on the program to increase exposure and promote new movies and new records. Ordinary little stars can’t even get on. Even if they pay, they are not qualified to participate in the recording of the program.
Oriental Culture and Entertainment Group has so rich resources. The old TV series and movies played by Macau Satellite TV are all purchased in batches at low prices, which is almost no different from being picked up for free. And the Black Horse Animation Company has just produced the first cartoon "Crayon Shin-shi". The first 20 episodes were broadcast on Phoenix TV and became popular in Hong Kong. The cartoons broadcast by Macau Satellite TV are replaying the first 20 episodes of "Crayon Shin-shin-shi".
It can be said that the cost of purchasing programs on Macau TV is extremely low, and since the TV station itself only needs to produce Portuguese news and all other programs are purchased from the outside, the administrative expenses are pitifully low. The advertising fees collected are deducted at any time, and the rest is all pure profit.
There are only more than 100,000 cable TV viewers in Hong Kong, and they are all users of Phoenix Channel (the predecessor of Phoenix Channel was cable TV). In order to allow people in Hong Kong to see Macau Satellite TV, Macau Satellite TV cooperated with Phoenix Channel. After applying for a full half year, Phoenix Channel was finally allowed to change the original cable channel to a Chinese channel, and the third wireless channel after the English channel - Entertainment Channel, broadcasting Macau Satellite TV programs with ordinary TV signals.
Whether it is Hong Kong's Phoenix Channel or cable TV operators in other regions, they can receive a considerable promotional fee and commission. As for how much money they can get, depending on the respective cable TV radiation range and population, Macau TV's expenditure in this regard is higher than the administrative expenses and program production costs of the TV station.
In the first month, even though Macau TV was loved by the audiences in Nanyang and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, it still managed to operate at a loss and lost more than the original Macau TV station.
The Portuguese and Australian government could not sit still. Before they could ask Kang Jianfei for an explanation, Macau TV suddenly announced that it would increase the original advertising costs by triple, the advertising costs during prime time by five times, and the advertising costs of super popular programs by ten times.
Kang Jianfei is not crazy. After the advertising fee of Macau Satellite TV increased exponentially, not only did it decrease, but more and more merchants were willing to advertise. There are two reasons for this. One is that the advertising fee standard was set very low when Macau Satellite TV started broadcasting. The second is that Macau Satellite TV's ratings have been increasing like snowballs. In just one month, the number of viewers in Taiwan alone has exceeded 800,000, and it is still increasing.
Since Macau TV is an overseas TV, it is impossible to enter Taiwan to broadcast programs under martial law. However, Taiwanese merchants do not care about these. 75% of Macau TV’s advertisers come from Taiwan. Because half of Asian viewers have the opportunity to see it, this is much more cost-effective than advertising on Taiwan’s local TV stations.
Moreover, although the largest shareholder of Macau TV is Kang Jianfei, Macau TV is nominally owned by the Portuguese-Macao government, and Taiwan cannot declare it an illegal TV station. At most, it can only be banned in Taiwan. These Taiwanese businessmen can therefore consult Macau TV for advertising without any worries.
Until the summer of 1986, Macau TV's total advertising revenue in five and a half months reached US$18 million, which was due to the small advertising expenses in the first month, otherwise it would have made more money. Macau TV's various cost expenditures (including program purchases, promotion fees and commissions) in the past few months did not exceed US$4 million, and it also made a net profit of more than US$13 million after tax, which is several times more than Phoenix TV's pure profit.
When He Hongsen saw the profit statement, he was so surprised that he didn't know what to say. A TV station that he had no hope at all actually came back to life in Kang Jianfei's hands, and his average monthly net profit was more than 2 million US dollars.
The elite English newspaper of the South China Morning Post commented: "Kang Jianfei is undoubtedly the most successful entertainment businessman in Asia. Every investment in the entertainment industry has made considerable profits. Even the cartoon "Crayon Shin-shirt" of the dark horse animation company has been sold to more than a dozen countries around the world, and Asia has caused a crayon Shin-shirt craze. Investing in Macau TV is one of Kang Jianfei's most classic works, and it is amazing from the content of the program to the promotion and letting go..."
Of course, this is a story later. Macau TV is still just a hot topic now, and it will take a few more months to be super popular.
Hong Kong media are not paying attention to Macau TV now, but Kang Jianfei's new film "A Chinese Ghost Story".
Since "Shushan" opened the eyes of Hong Kong audiences, "A Chinese Ghost Story" is a relatively similar costume drama. Many media have predicted that "A Chinese Ghost Story" may be negatively affected by "Shushan". After all, "Shushan" is really well filmed and audiences whose eyes are raised may not buy "A Chinese Ghost Story".
