Chapter 8 The basement guarded by the firefighters

The afternoon sun was obscured by the steaming smoke from Stalingrad, and even the sky became a little darker. In a ruins of buildings formed after the collapse of the building, the three of Wei Ran hid in the cracks of the collapsed ruins.

Through the hole, he secretly looked at the German tanks rumbling past a few meters away and the infantry following the tanks.

"let's go"

After Lieutenant Lev whispered, he carefully lifted the blanket covering his head and crawled cautiously along the collapsed ruins towards another building in the distance.

As the distance got closer, Wei Ran's heart jumped into his throat, because the two tanks that had just passed by them were parked not far away, heading towards a certain location in the city.

They were firing in different directions, and behind the two tanks, there were also a group of German infantrymen who fired from time to time!

"boom!"

A shell almost flew past the edge of the turret of one of the tanks, and hit hard near the gap where they had been hiding. The collapsed ruins stirred up a lot of smoke and dust, and the German soldiers and the three guardsmen who were following the tank were thrown away.

Everyone was shocked.

Lieutenant Lev, who was at the front of the queue, took a breath, sped up, and led the two men behind him forward for dozens of meters before rolling into a trench filled with corpses of Soviet soldiers.

"Stop aiming and leave quickly."

Wei Ran reached out and pressed down the rifle that Oleg was about to raise, urging in a low voice, "This guy is just looking for death. The straight-line distance between them and the German soldiers with their backs turned is less than 100 meters. What a shot!"

No one can escape after being beaten.

The three of them bent forward quickly along the trench. Occasionally, a tank would drive over, and they would immediately lie down among the corpses and pretend to be dead. The rumbling tanks rolled over their heads, and the rolling mud hit the three of them.

Their heads were all over their faces. But they didn't dare to move at all, because the German soldiers following the tanks jumped over the trenches one after another and rushed to the front line.

After waiting for more than ten minutes, until there was no more movement above his head, Lieutenant Lev carefully stood up and took a look, then waved Wei Ran and Wei Ran to continue moving forward.

Under the cover of this trench, the three of them finally managed to get into a three-story building with dense craters on the wall. However, just as Lieutenant Lev, who was leading the way, passed through the damage on the wall, a

The submachine gun was pressed against his head from the side.

Lieutenant Lev stiffened and slowly raised his hands. However, before Wei Ran and Oleg behind him could raise their guns, they were immediately pointed at by another man wrapped in a cloak.

"Come in" one of them whispered.

Lieutenant Lev glanced at the firefighter uniform the other party was wearing, finally let go of the submachine gun in his hand, took a few steps forward, and made way for the two men behind him.

"Uncle Gorsh! Are you still alive?" Oleg suddenly exclaimed.

"Oleg? Are you alive too?" The middle-aged man who originally pointed his gun at Lieutenant Lev responded in surprise, "Where is your father?"

"He died more than a month ago." Oleg, who suddenly met an acquaintance, had a cry in his voice. After all, he was just a boy of fifteen or sixteen years old.

"Put your hands down."

The middle-aged man whom Oleg called Gorsh held Oleg in his arms and said calmly to Lieutenant Lev and Wei Ran.

Wei Ran's tense nerves finally relaxed along with his drooping hands, but at this time, the scene fell into an eerie silence.

"Gorsh, let's go back first." Another person said hoarsely.

Gorsh nodded, but never let go of Oleg's hand. He just walked forward and said, "Come with me. This building is safe for the time being."

Under the leadership of Gorsi, a group of five people walked to the stairwell and then stopped. Wei Ran looked up and saw that the stairs leading upstairs had completely collapsed, leaving only a rope as thick as a finger.

Hanging quietly in the air.

But before his hand touched the rope, he was stopped by the man with a hoarse voice, "Don't touch that rope, there's a grenade tied to the other end."

Upon hearing this, Wei Ran quickly retracted his hand, and at the same time cold sweat broke out on his forehead. But Gorsi lifted a dusty door panel on the floor, revealing a round manhole cover.

The man with the hoarse voice tapped the manhole cover lightly with the muzzle of his gun. After a while, the manhole cover was pushed upward from the inside, revealing the black wellhead.

"Come in quickly." Before Gorsh could finish his words, Oleg was already the first to go in along the ladder at the edge of the well.

Lieutenant Lev hesitated for a moment, and then climbed down the ladder. Wei Yan, who stayed at the end, naturally had no choice but to follow him obediently. When Gorsh got in, the manhole cover above his head was also covered.

The door panel was re-covered, leaving only a gap less than ten centimeters high on both sides of the door panel that seemed to have been accidentally padded with bricks.

Under the dark wellhead, as an oil lamp lit up directly in front, everyone finally saw the structure here clearly.

It was unimaginable that the space under the wellhead was unexpectedly spacious. What surprised them even more was that there were at least seven or eight children, no more than eight or nine years old at most, hiding in it, as well as several children wrapped in clothes.

Wounded man in bandage.

And among these quiet children and wounded people, there was a young woman who was constantly busy.

"This used to be the basement of the fire station. The beautiful lady is nurse Yuna. We rescued her and the wounded from the trenches outside."

Gorsh said this and pointed to the man with a hoarse voice who came down with him. "He is Valery. Like me, he used to be a firefighter here. The other one with the oil lamp is an electrician nearby."

Sergey, tell me now, why did you come here with Oleg?"

"Uncle Gorsh, let me tell you."

Oleg was quite excited and first introduced the identities of Lieutenant Lev and Wei Ran, and then talked about what happened at his home and the mission they were about to complete.

Gorsh frowned when he heard this and motioned for everyone to follow him to the innermost side of the basement. He sat down against the wall and whispered, "I know the artillery position you mentioned. The Germans have deployed several cannons there.

, there are tanks protecting the surroundings, but just the three of you can’t do much even if you get past.”

Lieutenant Lev frowned upon hearing this, "How far is it from here?"

“Less than two kilometers”

Gorsh pointed to the top of his head, "Before this building was bombed down to only three floors, when the weather was good, you could even see the position clearly from the top of the building, but since the Germans discovered us here,

After the artillery observers, the building became what it is now.”

"Comrade Lieutenant, maybe I can do something." A weak voice came from not far away, and then a wounded man with a bandage on his chest sat up with the help of the nurse.

"What can we do?" Lieutenant Lev asked quickly.
