Chapter 12: Haunted Rumors

After cleaning the battlefield, the two of them and the dog returned to the cabin. It was already dark.

After working hard for most of the night, Goofy, Martin and Hound were all very hungry.

Gao Fei found a bundle of wire in the wooden house, made a grilling net by himself, and placed it on the stove.

Martin broke off a pile of corn cobs, along with large pieces of meat cut from the wild boar, and grilled them on the wire fence.

Gao Fei added two corn stalks to the stove, and soon the small stove was heated up. The pork was roasting until it was sizzling with oil, and the corn also exuded an attractive sweet aroma.

Martin's "seasoning skills" come in handy.

He added pepper and sea salt flavors to the barbecue, and at Goofy's suggestion, he added cheese and syrup flavors to the corn, which instantly filled the house with aroma!

Gao Fei cut off a large piece of fresh pork leg and gave it to the hounds for breakfast. He poured two glasses of water and placed it on the dining table.

Martin moved the roasted corn and pork to a wooden dinner plate and served it to the table.

After looking at the water in the cup, I suddenly had an idea and used the "flavoring technique" twice in succession. The water cup immediately exuded the fragrance of aged wine.

Gao Fei took a bite of the roasted wild boar meat and nodded with satisfaction.

"It's really good. With the 'seasoning technique', even simple meals can become flavorful."

The two enjoyed a delicious breakfast and were about to catch up on their sleep when the hound jumped up alertly and barked outside the door.

Goofy turned around and saw that two horses pulling a caravan were driving towards this side. The driver was none other than Mr. Smith.

"Good morning, Mr. Smith!" Gao Fei stood at the door, took off his hat and waved, "You came just in time, take a look at the prey we harvested last night."

Mr. Smith jumped out of the carriage and ran quickly to the door. At a glance, he saw five wild boar carcasses placed side by side in the corner.

"Mr. Rogge, Mr. Martin, you are really good!" Mr. Smith exclaimed.

The car curtain was raised, and Mrs. Miller jumped out. After checking the prey, she showed a satisfied smile.

"You two little scoundrels are not only good at bragging, you are also somewhat capable."

"Mrs. Miller, how about selling you these five wild boars to pay five months' rent?"

Gao Fei quietly activated the "Lobbying" skill.

Unfortunately, the landlady was too stingy and the test difficulty was as high as 20. The first "lobbying" ended in failure.

"Five months? What you think is great!" The landlady put her hands on her waist, with a fierce look on her face, "Five weeks is almost enough!"

"Wow! You are so stingy!" Gao Fei shook his head repeatedly, "This deal is not cost-effective. We would rather keep the wild boar meat for ourselves!"

"You two plus a dog, even if you eat till you're full every day, you won't be able to eat so much pork. It will rot and stink in less than two days, and it will be wasted!" Mrs. Miller sneered.

"It doesn't matter. I happen to have learned some curing skills. I can make bacon and ham out of the endless pork. I can sell it to the tavern, or I can keep it for myself and eat it later."

Gao Fei answered calmly.

The landlady's face twitched.

Gao Fei noticed that the lobbying DC for deal negotiations had dropped to 15 points, so he struck while the iron was hot.

"Mrs. Miller, five wild boars are worth three months' rent. If you still don't agree, forget it."

The landlady was a little hesitant, then turned back to her son-in-law to discuss it in a low voice, and then said to Gao Fei: "Wild boars can be big or small, fat or thin, so it's unreasonable to count them as one!"

"How to calculate it?" Gao Fei asked.

The landlady raised two stubby fingers: "200 pounds of pork is worth one month's rent! If we hunt wild boars in the future, we can also discount it at this price. How about that?"

Gao Fei was a little moved, but he still had to discuss it with Martin and listen to his partner's opinion.

"We shot five wild boars, and only two of them weighed more than two hundred pounds." Martin said angrily, "If the trade was based on pounds, we would not be in a hurry to hunt wild boars, and let the wild boars dig more cornfields for food.

Wouldn’t it be more cost-effective to slaughter them when they are fat and strong?”

Okay, brother, "Raise the bandits and respect yourself" is very easy to play!

Gao Fei couldn't help laughing.

When the landlady heard Martin's complaints, she was really worried that he was playing dirty tricks, raising wild boars without killing them to maximize profits, so she quickly put on a flattering smile.

"Mr. Wayne, Mr. Page! You can't live on the farm forever. I'll give you a week at most. You must kill all the wild boars!"

"Of course, I won't let your hard work go in vain!"

"In addition to the purchase price we just negotiated, I will try my best to introduce you to business and help you make a lot of money in the future. How about that?"

When he heard "introducing business", Martin was also moved.

"Mrs. Miller, your words are unfounded. You have to reveal first what kind of business you plan to introduce to us?" Gao Fei inquired.

The landlady rolled her eyes, and suddenly her eyes lit up, as if she had thought of some good idea.

"You all know John d'Urberville, the grocer of Pipe Street, don't you?"

"Of course we do. We also owe Mr. Deborah 4 silver thalers for stationery. For such a small debt, he comes to collect debts every three days. It's so annoying!" Martin replied angrily.

"Hey! Don't worry about this small amount of money, I'll pay it back for you!" The landlady suddenly became generous, "The De'Urberville family has been having a troublesome thing recently, and they are trying to hide it so that no one knows about it!

Hehe! They can’t hide it even if they want to, and there’s no way they can escape my eyes and ears!”

"That's right, you are the most well-informed person on our Tobacco Street. Even when a patrolman meets a stranger, he has to ask you about his background."

Gao Fei flattered him casually, and then asked the landlady:

"What happened to the d'Urbervilles?"

"I don't know exactly what happened. I just heard that there are ghosts at work, and the family is restless!"

The landlady grinned happily at the misfortune.

"Roger, Martin, don't you call yourself great detectives? Do you dare to investigate the haunting of the d'Urbervilles?"

"If you can succeed in this business, not only can you earn a lot of money from the stingy old man Deborah, but more importantly, you can make a name for yourself. In the future, the neighbors will ask you for help when they have trouble at home, and the business will be prosperous!

"

"Ghosts...this is not easy to deal with." Martin was a little frightened.

Gao Fei calmly opened the astrolabe, confirmed that he had received the side mission prompt, and knew what he was doing.

"Mrs. Miller, the prospect you painted is so beautiful that I can't help but feel excited."

"Roger, so you are willing to accept my proposal?"

"No problem, it's settled." Gao Fei nodded cheerfully.

The landlady was so happy that she asked her son-in-law to load the wild boar into the caravan and take it back to the farm to weigh it.

Watching the caravan fly away in the dust, Martin couldn't help but turn around and ask Gao Fei: "Brother, are you really confident in dealing with ghosts?"
