Chapter 68: The Missing Ogre

"Yes, I remembered it too." Claire interjected, "The ogre was beaten to death by Musk on the boxing ring. Before he died, he was still like a little kid, crying and calling for his mother."

"Ah? There is such a thing?!" Lisa's beautiful blue eyes widened in surprise, "Musk! That ogre's mother... did she come to you for revenge later?"

"No." Gao Fei shook his head slightly, "If Mr. Mario hadn't mentioned it today, I would have forgotten about it."

"That's right, what happened half a year ago, what do you mean by suddenly bringing it up now?" Claire asked Mario.

"Hey! It's not the task assigned by the eldest brother!"

Mario looked depressed.

"After the fight that day, Brother Umberto asked me to find out why an ogre came to Patos Street, and why no one noticed it before he passed out drunk in the alley near the tavern.

Guy?"

"This is indeed strange." Claire frowned slightly, "Although Pattus Street is a mixed bag of good and bad, it is not a place where ogres can come and go at will."

"That's right! Later, I took a few brothers to investigate this matter, but the result was not smooth and there were still no clues."

"Until this afternoon, two brothers in the gang discovered two drunken ogres near the tavern!"

"These two idiots both insisted that they were their mother's most beloved sons. They started fighting and rolling around like two wild boars, attracting many people to watch."

"When I heard the news, I rushed over to arrest these two drunk ogres."

"I didn't expect these two bastards to be quite alert. They saw something bad and ran away!"

"I took my brothers on a trail and lost track of them near the garbage dump."

"Is this the end? Fortunately, you are still a thief, and you were thrown away by a drunken ogre. I am embarrassed for you!" Claire sneered.

"That's definitely not possible!" Mario glared unconvinced, "I searched carefully around the garbage dump and soon found a hidden path. The big footprints on the mud were definitely made by ogres!"

"I took my brothers to follow the footprints. Guess where we ended up?"

"Stop beating around the bush and talk the talk!" Claire rolled her eyes.

"Mr. Mario, where did you end up tracking?"

Lisa took the words with a wink.

"Ha! You can't imagine that it's actually a workhouse!"

"The workhouse..." Lisa was stunned for a moment, then turned to ask Gao Fei: "What is that place?"

"A place dedicated to adopting orphans and street children." Gao Fei smiled, "You can think of it as a charitable welfare institution."

"Isn't this right?" Lisa looked surprised. "All such welfare institutions should be registered with the church. Why didn't I know there was such an orphanage on Pattus Street?"

"My eldest lady! In your capacity, you only know about the official welfare institution that is part of the church system. The workhouse on Pattus Street is a private charity that does not use government funding and does not raise funds from the church. It is only normal that you don't know.

."

Mario smiled and made fun of the wealthy lady who did not know the sufferings of the world.

Lisa scratched her head in embarrassment and sighed: "I didn't even know there was such a purely privately funded workhouse. The founder must be a rich and kind-hearted person!"

"The founders of Pattus Street Workhouse, Mr. and Mrs. Freddy, are indeed very wealthy and have a good reputation. However, the couple live in a relatively remote place and rarely interact with outsiders."

After Claire explained for a while, she then asked Mario.

"Did you finally catch those two ogres?"

Mario shook his head slightly.

"We followed the footprints to the workhouse, crossed the yard, went out through the back door, and continued to follow until we reached the outside of the Freddy couple's mansion wall, where the footprints disappeared."

"As you all know, Freddy's mansion is very grand. It is built on a hill and is surrounded by a beautiful garden. From the balcony on the top floor, you can overlook the street scene of Pattus Street."

"I knocked on the door and asked the man who owned the house, Mr. Carl Freddy, if he had seen two ogres break into the house."

"Mr. Freddy shook his head in denial, but I was still worried. With my repeated insistence, he reluctantly allowed me to enter the house to search for traces of the ogre."

"I walked around this mansion and couldn't find the ogre, but the suspicion in my heart only increased."

"What do you suspect, Mario?" Claire asked.

"Such a large house is empty and deserted. Apart from Freddy and his wife, there are only three tall and strong young people living there."

"These three young men don't look very smart. They claim to be the adopted sons of Mr. and Mrs. Freddie. The smell of alcohol on their bodies is really suspicious..."

"Do you suspect that two of them are actually ogres in disguise?" Goofy asked Mario.

"That's what I really think. Unfortunately, there is no evidence, and it's hard to offend Freddy and his wife, so I can only leave first. I plan to ask Brother Umberto to come forward and investigate the Freddy family in depth."

"What does Carl Freddy do?" Lisa asked a question that Goofy was also very interested in.

"Carl's father is a maritime immigrant and his mother is a local. Like most second-generation immigrants, Carl became a soldier at a young age and served in the New World."

"It is said that he performed bravely on the battlefield and was honorably wounded many times. He retired eight years ago with the rank of cavalry captain."

"After retiring, Carl Freddy went into business with his uncle. Later, he inherited a large inheritance and the villa on the hill from his uncle. From then on, he lived a good life with no worries about food and clothing."

Mario stopped to take a sip of wine to moisten his throat, and then told the story about Freddy and his wife.

"About four years ago, Carl Freddie was smitten with a woman named Agatha and soon married this tall, plump and beautiful widow."

"Mrs. Freddie was keen on charity. She used the money her husband gave her to create a workhouse and adopt street children."

Having said this, Mario lowered his voice and his expression became a little subtle.

"Oddly enough, Mrs. Freddie's workhouse has been actively adopting street children over the years, but very few of the orphans who have grown up have left the workhouse. They all seem to have disappeared."

"Of course, we all know that the living conditions in the workhouse are terrible, and the adopted orphans are indeed very likely to die young."

"But four years have passed, and only three orphans have grown up safely and stayed with Freddy and his wife. They are the three people I saw in Freddy's yard this afternoon. Is this reasonable?"
