Chapter 1,470 Rosetta Stone

Most Egyptian scripts have radical symbols.

This kind of writing is often engraved on temple walls, religious monuments and papyrus. The main users are monks and scribes.

Such Egyptian hieroglyphics had an important influence on future alphabetic writing.

At different stages of ancient Egyptian history, Egyptian hieroglyphics underwent many changes in response to the needs of social life.

The priestly script appeared in the Middle Kingdom, and the civil script appeared in Egypt in the later period.

During Roman rule, Coptic writing appeared again.

This is an Egyptian script written with modified Greek letters.

Due to various historical reasons, ancient Egyptian writing failed to develop into alphabetic writing.

However, ancient Egyptian writing had an important influence on the formation of the Phoenician alphabet.

Around 1500 to 1000 BC, the Phoenicians who emerged on the east coast of the Mediterranean traded with the Egyptians.

At this time, the learned Phoenician monks rewritten the simple hieroglyphs into orderly letters to help their trade.

Due to the difficulty of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, and with the demise of ancient Egypt, this writing gradually became dead writing and was completely forgotten by people.

So, how was this kind of writing discovered in modern times?

This has something to do with the slate in Chen Wenzhe's hand!

Chen Wenzhe suspected that the stone slab in his hand was something similar to the Rosetta Stone.

Even Chen Wenzhe suspected that this might be part of the Rosetta Stone?

The Rosetta Stone is extremely important for the study of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

It is precisely because of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and the success of some people in interpreting Egyptian hieroglyphics that the entire history of ancient Egypt is revealed to us.

In fact, this kind of writing is very easy to recognize because the characteristics are very obvious.

For professionals like Chen Wenzhe who like antiques, it is really not a problem to know a little bit of hieroglyphics.

For example, oracle bone inscriptions and bell and tripod inscriptions are difficult to identify.

Besides, erudition should be the standard for antique appraisers.

Chen Wenzhe knew that there are three types of fonts for holy scripts, inscription style, monk style and popular style.

The inscription style was originally a popular and elegant style, and later became a solemn style carved on the stone walls of pyramids and temples, as well as painted on stone tools, pottery and other utensils. It is also the general name of the three types of fonts.

The appearance of the symbols resembles pictures, but in fact most of them have lost their pictographic function.

The epigraphic font is a decorative regular font, while the monk font is a practical cursive font, mainly used for religious writing. The internal structure of these two fonts is exactly the same.

Popular style is also called epistolary style or folk style, which is a simplified form of monk style.

Now that he has recognized it, the origin of the slate in his hand is not simple, so how did this kind of thing appear in China? It was actually bought by Li Tianqiang?

To put it bluntly, the discovery of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs was quite accidental.

That was more than three hundred years ago. It seems that in 1799, when Napoleon led his army to Egypt, one of his officers, Bouchard, led his soldiers to build fortifications near Rosetta City and discovered a piece of black basalt.

Broken monument.

The same inscription is engraved on the stele in two languages and three fonts.

The top is ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, the middle is ancient Egyptian cursive hieroglyphics (also known as folk script), and the bottom is Greek characters.

This is the famous stone tablet that was later called the "Rosetta Stone" by the world.

If you want to truly understand the culture and history of ancient Egypt, you must understand Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Therefore, after the news of the discovery of the "Rosetta Stone" was published in the "Egyptian News" newspaper at that time, it immediately attracted the attention of scholars from various countries.

They all tried to decipher the text on the tablet, and the Greek text on the tablet was quickly understood.

The text in the middle of the stele was quickly confirmed to be the folk script of ancient Egypt.

However, although scholars can understand the meaning of hieroglyphics and folk scripts with the help of the Greek text on the stele, they still have not solved the mystery of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Surprisingly, Champollion, an 11-year-old French boy, was determined to uncover the secrets of the ancient Egyptian writings on the Rosetta Stone.

He wanted the stone tablets to speak and tell people the secrets of ancient Egypt.

He worked diligently for 21 years to read Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Champollion discovered that when ancient Egyptians wrote the names of kings, they would add a box or put a thick line under the name.

There is also text framed with lines on the "Rosetta Stele". Is it the name of the king?

After continuous exploration, Champollion finally read through the two hieroglyphics of King Ptolemy and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt by comparing them with Greek.

They can be spelled out from right to left, left to right, or top to bottom.

Champollion was convinced that the graphic symbols in hieroglyphs, in general, represented the consonant symbols of pronunciation.

After hard work, in 1822, this mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics, which had been puzzling for more than 1,000 years, was finally solved by Champollion.

It turns out that the inscription on the "Rosetta Stele" is a letter of gratitude written by monks in the Egyptian city of Memphis in 196 BC to the then king.

This king was Ptolemy, the pharaoh of the Fifteenth Dynasty.

Shortly after he ascended the throne as king, he canceled the taxes owed by the monks and opened up new sources of revenue for the temple.

He took special protection measures for the temple, which brought a series of benefits to the monks.

So he quickly won the respect of the monks, so the monks wrote this letter of gratitude and engraved it on this black basalt stone with two words written in three fonts.

The small city of Rosetta is world-famous because of this stele that solved the mystery of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

However, this famous stele is no longer in the city. It is collected in the British Museum in London.

Chen Wenzhe knew that it was normal for such a famous stone tablet.

However, it would be very interesting to suddenly find a broken stone slab the size of a palm with an inscription that looked very much like the inscription on the Rosetta Stone.

Chen Wenzhe naturally wanted to confirm whether this was part of the "Rosetta Monument".

Therefore, he naturally used the recall skill.

Of course, it was impossible for him to read the history of this stone slab from beginning to end in front of Li Tianqiang and Chen Xingchen.

Therefore, he chose modern times, that is, the historical fragments where this stone slab was discovered, to watch.

Looking at it this way, he really easily discovered the historical truth.

Once you choose a time period, you can easily discover something.

Because the marker was so obvious, the first thing Chen Wenzhe saw was a group of soldiers.

They were digging or something, and suddenly there was a clang, and a soldier's shovel hit something hard.

He leaned down, touched it with his hand, and immediately started shouting in surprise.

Although he couldn't hear what he shouted, Chen Wenzhe clearly saw that they found the stone box where the treasure was buried.
