047. Fish

This is the real top of the food chain in this grassland.

Such thoughts emerged in Lu Tan's increasingly blurred consciousness.

He saw that the group of fish did not directly collide with the bus, but surrounded it, like hunters waiting for an opportunity, and would launch an attack if Lu Tiao made the slightest mistake.

The babble in Lu Tiao's mouth seemed to be the key. Even these behemoths could not resist the invasion of babble, but obviously their tolerance was slightly higher. As long as they were not close, they would not be affected very much.

I don’t know who couldn’t stand it first.

In the torment of his brain being burned out, Lu Tan saw a scene that was rare in his life.

In that vast grassland with no survivors, the grass more than three meters high was swaying, and the green light was like the sea, reflecting the dark and deep sky.

In the silent grass, countless black shadows wandered out, as if appearing out of thin air, and gathered towards the bus.

Those are all fish.

Fish with slightly different shapes soar in the sky, just like their ordinary counterparts living in the water shuttle among the aquatic plants.

Lu Jian didn't count their number.

He only looked straight ahead.

In the rearview mirror, Mary's throat was torn apart and there was no movement at all. On her body, weeds were slowly growing, assimilating her flesh and blood into a hotbed for nurturing itself.

Shi Shi's eyes were bloodshot. He covered his ears with his hands and huddled on the ground. Blood was already flowing from his nostrils, glasses, and mouth.

The two rat men in the car, something inside their bodies stirred up and finally reached their limit.

Bang——

The two bodies exploded, limbs flying, staining the entire carriage yellow.

Lu Tan saw this scene and got some inspiration.

He closed his mouth.

The maddening murmur suddenly disappeared, and the entire grassland fell into the noise of only the rotation of the engine and the friction of the tires.

In this moment of peace, Lu Tan called out.

"Throw these bodies out!"

He shouted at the stone.

Almost at the same time, Lu Jian pressed the crowbar against the accelerator. The crowbar, as if integrated with itself, delicately pressed against the pedal and was fixed, keeping the bus running forward at maximum speed.

He quickly walked back, picked up the rat man's broken head, and threw it out of the window.

When the ugly head flew out of the window, it did not fall in a parabola. Instead, it seemed to be suspended in the air as if the ground had lost its attraction, and was quickly thrown away by the high-speed bus.

In the unseen night sky, the head instantly attracted the attention of the fish. For a moment, the grassland boiled, and more than ten fish gave up traveling with the bus and turned to gnaw on the delicious rat head.

Lu Jian continued to throw the body parts of the two rat men out of the window, causing the fish to chase them and tear them apart in mid-air.

He last saw Mary who had stopped breathing.

This middle-aged woman's body is already covered with weeds, like a girl surrounded by flowers.

Lu Tian muttered an apology silently, lifted Mary's body and threw it out of the car through the door.

Finally, the few fish following the bus gave up the chase and circled around Mary's body. You took one bite and I took one bite, pecking at Mary's body and decomposing it in an instant.

Shitou looked at Lu Kan with fear and awe in his eyes.

"Stay away from me."

Lu Tan said, raised his hand, wrapped his fingers around the buds emerging from his eyes, and pulled hard.

The ivy-like bud suddenly twitched, struggling and squirming like an iron worm, causing Lu Tian's intraocular pressure to rise and his right eye to turn red.

But Lu Tan showed no mercy, he just wrapped it around his hand and pulled the sprout out completely.

The new shoots with young leaves twisted in Lu Tan's hands, and he threw them out of the car.

Returning to the driver's seat, Lu Tiao picked up the crowbar, sat on the seat, held the steering wheel with his left hand, and pulled his left upper arm with his right hand. He pulled out the vegetation protruding from the wound bitten by the rat man like a trick,

Throw it out the window.

At the same time, the ravings originating from the distant stars sounded again in Lu Tiao's mouth.

"■■■■■——"

The waiting vegetation on his body shook and trembled and stopped growing. Whether it was an illusion or not, even the fluorescence of the grass on the roadside around the bus began to dim.

Shitou sat in the last row, covering his ears and trying hard to endure Lu Tiao's murmurs.

Lu Jian saw that in front of him, not far away, the fluorescence had disappeared.

For the first time, he wanted to see the darkness so much.

After a while, the bus drove out of the grassland.

In other words, Lu Jian saw that the grassland was shrinking.

It was like a living creature, moving towards the area on the left side of the bus.

"I see...just like the rat tide moves periodically, the grass will move on its own."

"The extremely active grassland, soil, air, and fish form a special ecosystem."

"The Skaven... took advantage of this ecology?"

Lu Tan, who had stopped mumbling, was thinking about it before his brain cooled down.

"These rat men themselves don't seem to be affected by the grass, just like the fish. Could it be said that there is some kind of symbiosis between the two?"

"The rat men are responsible for attacking passing vehicles, and the grass will digest them, and finally become nutrition for the fish. And the nutrition needed by the grass may come from the fish flying in the sky?"

In the wilderness of the abandoned city, these ecologies seem to be a whole of their own.

Lu Tiaotong could understand why "Hound", a bounty hunter, and Mary, a biologist, had no knowledge or warning about this grassland.

Because I am afraid that none of the travelers who have witnessed this strange "creature" has survived.

"You're lucky."

Thinking of this, Lu Tan said to Shi Shi who was huddled in the passenger seat.

"You are witnessing a unique ecological structure in this ruins."

"Lucky?"

Shitou found Lu Jian's statement unbelievable.

Lu Tiao's murmurs still lingered in his mind, and he always felt that there was a voice that kept echoing in his ears, and that some kind of knowledge that Shi Shi didn't understand was trying to change the structure of his brain.

This made Shitou look livid, as if he was motion sick, and wanted to vomit, but there was nothing in his stomach.

"...I have read in a book before that the rat people were originally humans."

In order to try to ease the pain, Shi Shi recalled what he had read.

"They once owned a city, back in the days when the ruined capital was not yet the ruined capital."

"That city is even more glorious, more prosperous, and more lively than the abandoned capital. It is a real city of hope."

"They relied on the mines in the center of the city to unearth rare ores, and used these ores as fuel to build huge machinery."

As he spoke, Shi Shi's tone became calmer, and the pain seemed to go away. He could feel that his confession and memories were reaching some kind of harmonious consensus with the chattering words in his head. He even felt extremely wonderful.

I want to pour out everything on my mind at once.

"But they dug down, and dug down, and finally they found something terrible."

"Overnight, the entire city collapsed and became ruins."

"People thought this city had suffered a disaster and no one survived, but in fact, they all survived."

"Survived and was dominated by that terrible thing, turning into a creature that cannot see the sun."

"They became rat men."

Hearing this, Lu Tan turned his head slightly.

He saw that this young man, whose face was covered with blood, and who had experienced a life-and-death adventure while yearning for the abandoned city, had a cold and strange smile on his face.
