Chapter 18 Where are you, my lord?

Chapter 18 Lord, where are you?

As a farmer in a riverside village, Darren never thought that he would be able to spend the night in the lord's castle.

In the past, even looking at it from a distance would result in scolding from patrolling soldiers.

Although the reason of the soldiers was to prevent someone from sneaking in after being familiar with the castle, Darren stubbornly believed that this was the arrogance of the soldiers.

Now I am also someone who has lived in a castle. This was Darren's first thought after getting up.

Although I just built a big bunk on the ground and slept with many villagers.

He felt that his life was almost complete.

If his pregnant wife gave birth to a son, he would have no regrets in life.

Darren's life is that of a typical river farmer.

As a child, he played in the countryside with friends who had no surnames, and did not receive the same education as the children of the knights.

They didn't even have clothes that fit him, either too small or too big - because he grew up too fast and his parents couldn't afford to buy him new clothes every once in a while.

When Darren could pick up wheat ears, he began to work in the fields with his parents.

Not only do you work on your own land, but you also work on the land of your lord.

When he was a child, he didn't understand why the lord didn't have to work if he owned the same land.

Why does the lord live in a beautiful castle?

When he grew up, he understood that this is life.

When he understood this truth, his parents found him a wife.

She is also a wild girl from the next village. She grew up in the countryside like him.

For commoners, the marriage only needs to be witnessed by the godfather, and there is no need to report it to the school.

Relatives helped build a few wooden houses, and he and his wife's small family became stable.

After his marriage, he received a small piece of land from his parents. Although the food produced by this fertile land was enough to feed him and his wife, it was only enough to feed him.

If there is a child and another mouth opens, the family will be broken up.

There was no way, his parents also had to eat, so they couldn't give him more land.

Fortunately, there were enough small workshops in the river, specializing in producing various small things for the nobles of King's Landing, so he joined a certain workshop and started working.

Start saving money for the children who will join his family at some point in the future.

Save money so that your children can live a better life in the future.

Their workshop made wooden beds with exquisite reliefs, which were carefully carved by skilled craftsmen. He and several villagers were responsible for the work.

He couldn't imagine what kind of person would sleep on such a wooden bed, which could be called a work of art.

At least Darren will never be able to sleep on such a bed.

The price of dozens of silver deer is not something a small farmer can afford.

After each bed was made, he and three strong farmers carried it to the small pier in the village, and then put it on the boat that had been waiting there.

It was a very large ship, the largest that Darren had ever seen in his life.

Then they disembarked and watched it go away to King's Landing, a city that Darren would never be able to visit.

It is said that the ship first went down the Red Fork River, all the way to the mouth of the Trident River, then skirted the Crab Claw Peninsula to the Narrow Sea, passed Dragonstone Island to Blackwater Bay, and finally arrived at King's Landing.

It is said that there are thousands of such ships in King's Landing, coming from different areas such as Old Town, White Harbor, Lannister Port, Seagull Town, and even Pentos and Volanti across the Narrow Sea.

Ships from free trade ports such as Si, Myr, and Braavos.

These complex terms came out of the mouth of a certain old master, and then took root in Darren's heart.

He didn't want to visit these towns and harbors - he knew he had no chance - but he wanted to remember them and tell them to his children in the future.

Although they haven't met yet.

When he thought of his children, he thought of the new ax he bought.

After being robbed by bandits, the lord brought it back.

The ax he planned to buy was used to chop down trees.

The tree was cut down to get wood, and the wood was used to make a small bed for the child.

Darren also secretly learned some craftsmanship, thinking that his children could sleep on a bed with exquisite reliefs.

He did it himself.

Darren can't make his own life better, but he can make his son's life better.

Let your son receive some education and at least know more words than his own name.

Let your son wear some decent clothes and be decent.

Let your son know some things outside, know that the Red Fork River is a tributary of the Trident River, know how prosperous King's Landing is, and know that there are places like Pentos and Braavos.

It would be better if my son could visit these places when he becomes an adult.

His son has been there, which means he has been there.

"Come out quickly, they're here again." The soldier's shout interrupted Darren's reverie.

He stood up, picked up his ax, and followed the soldiers up the city wall with the villagers.

The Blackwood family's soldiers left part of it last night in the evening, and now they are here again.

"It looks like they have arrested someone." The soldier stood in front, looked around, and said to the farmers.

Darren couldn't see what was going on under the city wall because he was in a low position and could only stand at the back.

"Open the door quickly, or I will kill her." A rough voice came from below the castle.

"They captured a woman," the soldier continued.

"Your lords have run away, why haven't you opened the door yet?" asked a rough voice.

"Don't open the door until he comes back. This is your order." Amber in gray robe replied.

Darren recognized him. He was the steward of the lord's castle. He sometimes went to the village to collect taxes on behalf of the lord.

"I don't want to kill anyone, but you are not cooperating. If Master Brynden makes a mistake, my whole family's lives will be at risk. We are all civilians, why bother me?" The rough voice continued to persuade me to surrender.

.

Gray-robed Amber was unmoved. He turned around and directed some people to go to the east and some to go to the south, with bows and crossbows.

Half of the people followed the order and left, and the ground of the city wall suddenly opened up.

"This is your choice, I didn't force you." The rough voice sounded quite impatient.

Then there was a woman's scream.

It looked like something terrible had happened to this poor woman and Darren prayed silently for her.

He was assigned to stay here. After hearing the screams, he came forward and lay down on the wall like the soldier, Gray Robe Amber, to watch.

"Susan, what's Susan?"

When Darren saw it, he instantly became panicked.

The person tied up at the foot of the city was his seven-month-pregnant wife, that honest river woman.

"Let him go and don't touch her." Darren shouted excitedly.

After hearing this, the officer in silver chain mail—the owner of the rough voice—smiled evilly and brought down the riding crop he held.

Susan screamed again.

Darren's heart also screamed and throbbed violently.

He thought of the lord who cut down the bandit leader with three swords.

If the lord was here, these bastards would not dare to do this!

Lord, where are you?
