34. Eternal Life

Darwin Harris has a good name and a good family.

He lives on Venus in a vast plain: the low area of the Atalanta Planitia.

Like most conservative Venusian citizens, the Harris family has rarely left this millions-square-kilometer plain.

Therefore, local citizens will be trapped there for their entire lives and become more conservative at the same time.

As one of the first two planets colonized by humans, the atmosphere of Venus is far less open than that of Mars. This may also be related to the vast land of Venus and the sparse population. It is also related to the fact that the sun rises or sets every 100 days.

The planet's slow rotation allows humans on it to communicate slowly.

Darwin was born into such a planet and into such a family. The pastures and grasslands at home were enough for him to inherit his father's legacy and live a life of food and clothing.

However, the reality is always somewhat different from imagination.

His parents immigrated thirty years ago. For citizens who lived in this area at an extremely slow pace of life, thirty years ago was probably the same as thirty days ago.

That's a new neighbor who just moved in.

So when Darwin was old enough and started attending elementary school, he found that there were no enthusiastic children in the school.

Those children who had known each other for a long time excluded Darwin. Those in the small circle of girls who had known each other for a long time prohibited anyone from approaching Darwin.

Children are always like this. There is no distinction between good and evil. They only think about two things when doing anything: "This is fun. That is not fun."

Isolating an out-of-town kid? This game is awesome.

So Darwin spent his elementary school years alone.

Of course his parents are aware of this kind of thing, but they know better that this kind of thing needs to be solved by themselves. The intervention of family members will only make things worse.

When he reached high school, he thought things would get better. He would have friends with whom he could keep company, and he would also meet a girl he liked.

In the end, he found that he still thought too much.

Darwin began to suffer bullying.

All men are created equal - don't be fooled by this sentence from the 18th century work, the Declaration of Independence. In fact, at the time when this sentence was born, slavery was legal. Human trafficking was protected by the government. Women

There are no human rights.

However, humans have been working hard in this direction since the 20th century.

After hundreds of years of educational evolution, human beings have just emerged from this state of bullying others. But there will always be some minor problems, such as Darwin's classmates - and their tutors are not very good.

So he was bullied badly in high school and began to never communicate with anyone. He stayed in his room all day and relied on games to survive.

Then 10 years passed.

On this day, at the age of 25, he had become an adult male in the Federation. His grades prevented him from receiving a college education. One day, he heard that an organization called the Eternal Life Society was recruiting members. This was posted by someone in the chat group of his high school classmates.

.

Of course he won't attend.

Just two weeks later, he received an interview notice, and the Eternal Life Society informed him that he would take the space elevator to an address in the floating city in the atmosphere at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning.

There is no doubt that it was his high school classmates who signed up for him.

They are not doing good for Darwin, they just do this kind of thing all the time - such as putting Darwin's contact information on gay dating websites, and signing up Darwin for the school's exploration activities that go 10,000 meters underground.

He wasn't going to go originally, but because of something that happened last night, he decided to attend the interview.

He wants his parents to be proud of him.

"That's why I hate coming to Venus."

After sending away an interviewer, a petite woman with blond hair and wearing a dark gold dress crossed her chest and complained at the interview table. "She is old-fashioned and self-righteous. She thinks she is a shepherd of the aristocracy."

After speaking, she rolled her eyes at Joyce beside her: "Don't remind me, I know this can't represent everyone. But please let me vent."

Owen on the other side shouted: "Next, Darwin."

The door was pushed open, and a young man who was a little cautious and walked very slowly walked into the room.

He sat on the chair and only dared to touch his butt a little.

Irving looked through Darwin's delivery materials and then raised his eyebrows: "You didn't write this, did you?"

Darwin stiffened and answered with great difficulty: "My classmates like to tease me."

"I understand." Owen closed the document and raised his chin. "Then just leave."

Darwin nodded stiffly and walked towards the door with heavy steps.

He held the doorknob with his hand, opened a gap, and then closed it again.

Darwin mustered up the courage to ask: "Can I join permanently...?"

Darwin, who had forgotten his name, was so nervous that he almost fainted.

"It's the Eternal Life Society," Owen reminded.

"Can I join the Eternal Life Society...?"

"Okay." Owen put the information aside. "Tell me about you, why do you want to join the Eternal Life Society?"

The woman who complained earlier did not appear to be sarcastic.

Darwin walked back to his chair without sitting down. That would make him even more nervous.

"I want to help my parents."

Owen nodded: "Most of us think so, are there any others?"

"Can I tell a story?"

Owen made a please gesture.

Darwin told the story of being bullied since childhood and becoming autistic and introverted.

He has always wanted to escape reality. Until late last night, Darwin was playing an augmented reality game in the bedroom. One level was so difficult that he couldn't pass it no matter what.

I was angry and anxious, but my parents didn't dare to make any noise while they were sleeping next door.

Until one time he finally passed it successfully, and the joy of overcoming the difficulty made him yell with all his strength.

The father was awakened by the shouting and rushed into the house. Seeing that his son was just playing games, he complained: "I have to work tomorrow."

Darwin apologized, but he was still excited and started to show off: "I just successfully landed in Normandy, with only minor injuries!"

After he finished speaking, he calmed down. Father doesn't play games and doesn't know what Normandy is.

But this did not prevent his father from being happy for him. He shouted outside the bedroom: "It's okay, my son, my son has landed in Normandy!"

"What a great son." The mother's shout came from across the room.

Afterwards they went back to sleep, and Darwin went to sleep too.

When he got up at noon the next day, he saw a cake sitting in the kitchen with the words: "You landed in Normandy" written on it.

"They want to be proud of me." Darwin burst into tears, his swollen eyes showing determination. "So I want to make them proud of me."

The blonde woman said: "So you are a loser, a loser, Luther, and no one cares about your waste?"

"...Yes." Darwin sniffed and rubbed his sleeves randomly over his eyes. The buttons of his sleeves scratched his eyes and left a red mark. "Not anymore."

"A man of courage."

Joyce nodded and said.

"Welcome to the Eternal Life Society.
