Chapter 297 First Battle

Yuzhu was very cautious in using his troops. No one could afford to lose, but he could not afford to lose.

If he were defeated and died, the tragedy of the late Qing Dynasty being allowed to be bullied by foreign powers would happen again.

Therefore, when a large army marches, there are always two rows of carriages outside and soldiers inside.

This has a lot to do with the characteristics of the main force led by Yuzhu, the Wuwei camp.

The equipment of the Wuwei camp is all dog-lock flintlock muskets.

This flintlock gun was originally loaded with round lead bullets, its effective range was 60 meters, and its maximum range was 120 meters.

Not having the conditions to modify guns for the time being, Yuzhu devoted his attention to modifying the loading methods of lead bullets and gunpowder.

After testing, the fixed lead bullets with pointed tips and round bottoms greatly increased the airtightness of the gunpowder, increasing the effective range to 80 meters, and the maximum range exceeded 220 meters.

Moreover, the early appearance of fixed ammunition increased the soldiers' rate of fire to five rounds per minute.

Yuzhu once saw a video of a nostalgic performance.

In the video, two well-trained foreigners, after loading ammunition from the front chamber, did not use metal rods to compact it, but slammed the ground with the butts of their rifles.

The advantage of this is that it uses the principle of reaction force to directly compact the ammunition, thus greatly saving the firing time and increasing the shooting speed.

When an advanced weapon appears, in fact, the technical conditions are already available, but people still need to gradually find ways to increase the shooting speed due to lack of knowledge.

Yuzhu had far more insight than anyone else. Under his guidance, the Wuwei Battalion easily overcame the slow process of exploration and allowed the dog-locked flintlock rifles to achieve greater shooting effectiveness in advance.

To put it bluntly, the gun is still the same gun. However, due to the differences in bullets, gunpowder installation, and compaction methods, Yuzhu has achieved a relatively satisfactory range and rate of fire in advance.

You should know that in the British army of the same era, commanders generally required soldiers to put the enemy within fifty yards and then fire together to increase the killing power.

Fifty yards, which is about 45 meters.

In addition to the Wuwei camp, among the 300 green camp soldiers who went out with Yuzhu, there were 150 archers, 100 spearmen, and 50 shotgun soldiers.

When Kangxi conquered the Three Feuds, the Eight Banners soldiers were no longer reliable, and the main force was the Green Camp soldiers.

However, after destroying San Francisco, Kangxi was worried about the threat of the Green Camp, and forcibly reduced the number of shotguns and artillery in the Green Camp in each province.

The Xining Green Camp soldiers simply don’t have artillery.

Since this was the first frontal battle under Yuzhu's command, he thought that during hand-to-hand combat, these green battalion archers, pikemen and shotgunners could act as temporary mobile plugging agents.

Yuzhu had seen the drills of the green battalion shotgun soldiers. The firing rate was at least one round per minute. It was really useless and could only be used as a reserve force.

What is supposed to come will come sooner or later!

When Yuzhu's troops were about to arrive at the small market town of Chahantuolohai, a Mongolian cavalry team of nearly a thousand people blocked their way.

The Mongolian cavalry occupied a hill and took advantage of the situation to attack the Qing army from a commanding position.

Following Yuzhu's order, the soldiers of the Wuwei Battalion quickly formed five rows with one hundred people in each row.

Among them, three rows were in front and two rows were in the back. The accompanying carriages spread out to both wings, protecting the flanks of the entire team.

Yuzhu knew very well that the Mongols' best attack method was frontal attack and flanking.

The carriage blocked the flank, which was tantamount to restraining the Mongolian offensive characteristics in a targeted manner.

Under normal circumstances, if there were no cavalry from the Green Battalion and Volunteer Battalion holding back, the most reasonable way for the Wuwei Battalion to fight would be a square hollow gun array.

During the Battle of Waterloo, the elite French cavalry led by Marshal Ney was frustrated by the British hollow gun array.

The battle ended with the emperor's disastrous defeat and made Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, famous.

At this time, the ten primary and secondary cannons of the firearms battalion's artillery armor were lined up in the entire front formation.

The artillery that Yuzhu brought out were all mother-and-child cannons cast in the 29th year of Kangxi's reign.

The main gun is about 1.77 meters long, weighs 47.5 kilograms, and is equipped with five sub-cannons. The gun is equipped on a four-legged wooden frame with iron wheels on the feet, which can be pushed or pulled.

When in use, place the sub-cannon into the opening on the rear belly of the mother cannon, secure it with an iron bolt, then ignite the sub-cannon, and the warhead will fly out from the muzzle of the mother cannon.

The maximum range of this kind of combined-container cannon loaded with solid bullets is more than three hundred meters.

However, it is enough to deal with the Mongols on horseback and drawing bows.

The commander of these ten cannons is Ulanara Sheding, the commander of the firearms battalion.

She Ding commanded the artillery armors, and after some hurried reloading, they were finally ready.

Yuzhu, who was riding on the horse, could only shake his head secretly and sigh, but could not take the initiative to do anything.

Because, before leaving Beijing, although Kangxi gave Yuzhu the command of the weapons battalion, he did not allow Yuzhu to interfere with the daily training of the artillery armor.

There was no way, after Kangxi became suspicious, he became surprisingly stubborn and difficult to correct.

Xiaoce Lingdunduobu, holding the captured Rakshasa country's monocular telescope, carefully observed the Qing army's formation.

Within the Junggar Khanate, there has always been a saying that great strategies lead to good planning, while small strategies lead to bravery.

To be honest, in the past field battles between the two armies, the quasi-army had more wins than losses.

This is because the Junggar Khanate is right at the throat of the Overland Silk Road and can obtain a lot of firearms from the west.

There were two hundred arquebusiers in the cavalry led by Xiao Celing. The ratio of arquebusiers to cavalry was an astonishing one to five.

Precisely because of the existence of these two hundred musketeers, facing Yuzhu's stop-and-go march, Xiao Celing couldn't wait any longer, so he simply did not set up an ambush and faced the Qing army head-on.

Among Ce Ling's team, except for the two hundred musketeers who were serious quasi-troops, the remaining eight hundred cavalry were rebels from the Kalkanan Right Banner.

This chapter is not over yet, please click on the next page to continue reading! The leader of the rebels, Borjijin Yaku, looked at the neat formation of the Qing army and felt a little guilty in his heart.

"Minhan Nayan, the Qing army's formation is too far away, how can we fight this battle?" Yaku asked, because he didn't want to rush out and die first.

Minhan Nayan is the head of a thousand households in the Quasi Army. The head of a hundred households is Zhawen Nayan.

The elder brother of Xiao Celing, the elder Celing is Tu Mian Nayan, the head of ten thousand households.

Perhaps because he didn't like Yaku's miserly appearance, Xiao Celing said arrogantly: "Habson Khan, you are on the two wings and we are in the middle. Let's go hand in hand, okay?"

What Yakku fears most is that those who lead the battle will be used as cannon fodder. Now that Xiao Celing is willing to lead the musketeers and act as the main force of the attack, he naturally has no objection.

All the khan kings on the grassland were martial arts. Yaku dared to call himself khan, and he didn't care much about the Qing army coming to attack him.

Because, even if the Qing army in Xining recaptures the Kalkanan Right Banner, they cannot stay on the grassland for too long.

Therefore, Xiao Cering took his two hundred musketeers in the center, and Jaku's cavalry force was divided into two. Five hundred people followed him and three hundred people remained on the hills.

The elite cavalry serving as a reserve force suddenly come out while the battle between the two armies is in full swing and catch the enemy by surprise. This is the inherent habit of the Mongols in combat.

Due to their wealth, in Yuzhu's team, officers above the rank of sentry commander (platoon leader) each have a monocular telescope, a pistol, and a command saber.

The officers under Yuzhu could clearly see the big movement of the Mongols coming towards them with great force.

This was the first time that the soldiers of the Wuwei Battalion fought head-on with the enemy.

As the saying goes, if you are a mule or a horse, you have to pull it out and walk around to know who is who.

The Mongols were pressing forward, but the officers and soldiers of the Wuwei Battalion, who had seen blood, showed no signs of panic.

On the contrary, among the green camp soldiers and volunteer rural soldiers, many people's faces turned pale with nervousness and their bodies were trembling slightly.

Yuzhu ignored the Green Camp soldiers and the rural soldiers. These miscellaneous soldiers only played a supporting role, so there was no need to pay too much attention to them.

As the Mongols got closer and closer, Yuzhu sent someone to order Sheding that as long as the enemy came within the range of the cannons, they could fire together.

However, what Ling Yuzhu didn't expect was that Xiao Celing was so cunning that he actually stopped advancing when the two armies were about 500 meters apart.

Yuzhu touched his chin, thought for a moment, and couldn't help but smile.

Obviously, the enemy had seen his artillery and deliberately stopped outside the range of the cannon.

The rebels have no artillery, and Yuzhu's men all have improved dog-lock flintlocks. What's so scary?

"Pass my order, beat the military drums, and the front troops of the Wuwei camp will spread out in line and attack across the board."

"Yes." The messenger who had been waiting for orders, after receiving Yuzhu's order, turned his horse and galloped out.

The commander-in-chief of the former army was battalion commander Lu Wu.

After receiving Yuzhu's order, Lu Wu immediately drew his sword out of its sheath and ordered sternly: "Everyone is here, put your guns on your shoulders, form a battle formation, and advance at a constant speed."

Seeing the Qing army moving, Xiao Celing smiled proudly and said: "Habson Khan, the golden dog has been fooled."

"Habson Khan, when the Golden Dog approaches, take all your men and completely encircle the Golden Dog's right wing, then the Golden Dog will be defeated."

After Lao Nu founded the Jin Dynasty, the Junggar Khanate never recognized the Qing Dynasty as the master of the entire Central Plains. Therefore, Xiao Celing deliberately called the Qing army golden dogs.

"Okay." Jaku smiled happily. All fools know that facing the enemy head-on will cause the greatest losses.

The flank attack is different. You can advance or retreat, and it is extremely difficult to be completely wiped out.

After the discussion was completed, Xiao Celing saw Jaku's secret joy and couldn't help but sneer secretly, what a stupid ass.

Only a fool can't see that Jaku wants to preserve his strength to the greatest extent.

However, Ce Ling quietly entered the hinterland of Qinghai from Gasnur. It was very difficult to supply supplies along the way. He only brought 200 musketeers with him, so he needed Yaku's assistance.

The Mongols want to plot against Yuzhu, and Yuzhu also wants to catch them all in one fell swoop. As the saying goes, tigers want to eat people, and people are harmful to tigers!

When we meet on a narrow road, the brave will win.

This battle can be regarded as Yuzhu’s first head-on battle!
