Chapter 1105 1100 [Ming Dynasty Monk and Taoist]

On the day the Dunhuang suicide note arrived in Beijing, there was no disturbance.

The next day, the monk, Taoist priest, and doctor were called.

In the Song Dynasty, the Senglu Academy and the Daolu Academy were merged into the Sengdao Si by Zhu Guoxiang. They were affiliated to the Ministry of Rites and were at the same level as Honglu Temple. They were in charge of national religious affairs, including Manichaeism and Nestorianism, which were also under the Sengdao Si.

The top leader is the doctor, who oversees all the teachings.

There are Senglu Office, Daolu Office, and Zalu Office. The chief officer of each office is Yuanwailang, and they are all served by serious Jinshi officers. The deputy second officers of each office are served by practitioners of each religion.

The monk, Taoist priest, named Mao Kui, is almost eighty years old and refuses to retire even if he lives.

When Li Bao conquered Fujian, Mao Kui was already the transport envoy to Fujian in the former Song Dynasty.

He collaborated with Fuzhou officials to surrender to the Ming Dynasty, but he was never reused. He also escaped corruption cases time and time again, and he is still active in his seventies and eighties.

This man also practiced Buddhism and Taoism, advocating that Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism were one family. Ju Ming had asked him to manage religious affairs for more than five years.

If six years is up, it's really time to retire.

Even if he didn't apply, Ju Ming would force him to retire. Why would he still occupy an official position at such an age?

Mao Kui came to the Hanlin Academy on crutches. When he saw Zhu Guoxiang, he was obviously stunned, and then he bowed and greeted: "Your Majesty, Mao Kui, pay homage to His Majesty the Emperor!"

Zhu Guoxiang smiled kindly: "Old sir, sit down quickly."

"Thank you, Your Majesty."

A junior official from the Hanlin Academy had already brought the chair and took Mao Kui's crutch to help hold it.

Zhu Guoxiang said: "Here are some scriptures from various religions. You can ask the monks and Taoists to make a copy, and then decide whether to publish them after studying them. Some scriptures may cause criticism."

"Criticism?" Mao Kui couldn't understand.

Zhu Guoxiang took out a stack of scriptures: "For example, these are scriptures from the Third Order Sect, which were banned many times during the Sui and Tang dynasties."

Mao Kui has been managing religious affairs for many years, so he naturally knows what the Third Order is, which is a branch of Buddhism in the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

This religion advocates asceticism. Monks can only eat one meal a day, and it must be food obtained through begging. When monks see passers-by, they must bow to passers-by and call on the world to give alms to monks. After a monk dies, his body is placed in the wild for birds and animals to gnaw on.

Eat and use your body to give to living beings. Oppose the creation of Buddha statues. All living beings are true Buddhas. When chanting Buddha, only remember Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva...

Since the third-level teaching scriptures were banned, Mao Kui only heard of his name and did not know the specific teachings.

A Hanlin official handed over the scripture, and Mao Kui took it with both hands and read it carefully. Before he finished reading it, he was horrified and said: "No wonder the Sui and Tang Dynasties wanted to ban this religion. This is a Buddhist heresy."

What I mentioned before are just the rules and practice methods of the third level religion.

The real reason why the Third Order Sect is banned is that it believes that starting from the Sui Dynasty, it has entered the Age of Ending Dharma, and it belongs to the world of dirty land after the destruction of the Pure Land... It has a bit of a heretic flavor.

During the Tang Dynasty, although the spread of the Three-Level Sect was prohibited, it was still regarded as a branch of Buddhism in the "Zhenyuan Buddhist Records". Starting from the Song Dynasty, the Three-Level Sect was officially expelled from Buddhism.

Zhu Guoxiang said: "The scriptures of the Third Order Sect, as well as Manichaean and Nestorian scriptures such as "Maniguang Buddhist Dharma Rites", "The Three Weird Mengdu Praise of Nestorianism in the Great Qin Dynasty", even if the monks and Taoists do not take it,

When you go out to spread the word, you should also make a copy and keep it."

"I obey!" Mao Kui stood up tremblingly.

Zhu Guoxiang said: "Take them all. Even if the scriptures of each religion are not unique, the contents must be carefully compared. There may be individual words that are different from the current ones, which are worthy of careful reference and verification by practitioners of each religion."

Naturally, Mao Kui couldn't take it away by himself. More than 90% of the twenty Dunhuang suicide notes were Buddhist scriptures.

The guards of the imperial city helped the Hanlin Academy servants to move boxes of scriptures for each teaching into the car and transport them to the monks and Taoist yamen.

The painters and the eminent monks of Shazhou have already sorted it out and classified the rare scriptures separately.

Returning to Sengdaosi, Mao Kui first read by himself.

He picked up a copy of the "Ten Chantings of Bhikkhu Precepts". He didn't pay much attention to it at first, but when he saw the year and month of the copy, he sat up straight and became cautious in his movements.

This is a manuscript from the first year of Jianchu in Xiliang (AD 405)!

Even if the content is the same as the current precepts, the date of its copying alone is enough to serve as a temple treasure or family heirloom.

After putting the book away, Mao Kui picked up another one.

More than ten minutes later, Mao Kui's hands were already shaking.

There were two Taoist scriptures placed in front of him, one was "Laozi Xiang'er Commentary" and the other was "Laozi Huahu Jing".

They are all Taoist books that have been lost long ago and only exist in legends!

Mao Kui opened his mouth to call for someone, but found that his mouth was so dry that he couldn't make any sound. He drank a sip of the already cold tea to moisten his throat and then said: "Call all the heads and officials of each department, immediately!"

The chief officials of the Sengdao Department were all Jinshi, so naturally they worked in the Yamen every day.

However, the adjutants are all practitioners and usually live in Buddhist temples and Taoist temples. It will take some time to call them here.

An hour later, all officials from the Sangdao Department gathered in front of Mao Kui.

The current adjutant of the Taoist Daoist Office is called Huangfutan, who is a disciple of Xue Daoguang. He was a famous doctor in Shandong, and he fled to the southeast. While practicing Taoism in Tiantai Mountain, he went down the mountain to treat people.

Historically, Zhao Gou's biological mother suffered from an eye disease that could not be cured by any imperial doctor, but was finally cured by Huangfu Tan. He did not want to stay in Hangzhou, so Zhao Gou sent him to Qingcheng Mountain to manage the Shangqing Palace. After his death, he was buried in the Qing Palace on Qingcheng Mountain.

Tianshi Pond (a tombstone was unearthed in later generations).

There are many high Taoists nowadays, such as the Sa Shou Jian Sa Celestial Master.

However, Ju Ming particularly disliked Master Sa's nagging. Master Sa himself knew it, so he voluntarily left the capital and went south to continue practicing Taoism. His chemistry became more and more sophisticated. He was especially good at gunpowder and thunder.

Learn all kinds of illusions!

Huangfutan was a disciple of the Jindan Nan Sect, and had a somewhat romantic relationship with Emperor Zhu. Because of his superb medical skills, he was employed at the Imperial Hospital, and was even a professor at Luoyang Medical College.

With the addition of various buffs, Huangfu Tan became an official in the Monk and Taoist Department. Because all his superiors were civil servants, he himself was the Taoist priest with the highest official position in the country.

"I want you to bet?"

"I changed the Hu Jing?"

Huangfutan, who was a profound Taoist, usually behaved calmly, but at this moment, he was dumbfounded and was stunned by these two Taoist scriptures.

Mao Kui said: "These two Taoist scriptures come from the secret room of the Shazhou Buddhist Cave. In addition, there are some Taoist scriptures. You can find some Taoist priests to copy them together and send them to all Taoist temples across the country for study."

Next to him was Monk Zhenhui from Mount Wutai, the younger brother of Monk Zhenbao, the anti-gold leader of Mount Wutai. He was critically reading the scriptures of the Third Order Sect.

"They are all heresy! They are all apocryphal!"

Master Zhenhui tore it apart with great force, tearing several pages of the third-level teaching book into pieces.

When he continued to tear up the book, Mao Kui quickly stopped him, grabbed Master Zhenhui's hand and said, "Master is in trouble."

Master Zhenhui then gave up and clasped his hands together and said, "Amitabha, this poor monk has violated the precept of anger."

Mao Kui said: "His Majesty the Emperor has issued an order. Although it is inconvenient to disseminate the third-level teaching scriptures, copies must still be copied and kept in the Sengdao Department. As for the originals, they must be sent back to the palace for collection. You tore them off... you can only glue them again.

stand up."

Want to send it back to the palace for collection?

Looking at the pages of scriptures that he tore into pieces, Master Zhenhui looked a little embarrassed.

Mao Kui added: "More than ten carts of Buddhist scriptures were brought back from Shazhou, and the master was asked to convene monks to compare them. After all, many of them are ancient scriptures. If there are differences in words, eminent monks from various Buddhist sects can study and debate them."

"That's the truth." Master Zhenhui said.

There was also a religious figure at the scene, but he was a Nestorian monk from Liangzhou. He not only assisted the civil officials in managing Nestorianism, but also managed Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism and other other religions.

Nestorianism is very important. After all, the largest force in Mobei, the Kelie Tribe, most of its members are Nestorian believers. Moreover, there are also many people in the Hexi Corridor and Xinjiang who believe in Nestorian Christianity.

The Ming Dynasty was reforming Nestorianism.

Good Nestorian teachings can be retained, such as not recognizing Mary as the Virgin, not worshiping idols but only crosses, not recognizing any purgatory, academic staff not eating meat, allowing ancestor worship, opposing transubstantiation, Christ having human nature, etc.

.

What needs reform most is that the Dean of Academic Affairs is elected. Instead, the Dean of Academic Affairs must be elected first and reported to the court for approval before it can take effect. The academic affairs system of each diocese must be brought under the jurisdiction of the court!

This reform must be written into the Nestorian scriptures. All Nestorian Christians must know that the Chinese emperor is the ruler of the world and has the right to appoint academic administrators at all levels.

As for where the emperor's power came from, let the Nestorian monks make up their own stories, and they must be well-founded.

Nestorian monks from the original Xixia Kingdom have now compiled several versions, but Ju Ming is not very satisfied.

If the compilation is not good enough, the Nestorian officials in the Monk and Taoist Department will have to get out!

Master Zhenhui quickly sent a telegram, asking eminent monks from all provinces across the country to come to Luoyang to study the ancient scriptures together. More than ten carts of Buddhist scriptures were enough for them to sort out and study them slowly.

Huangfutan summoned Luoyang Taoist priests, first transcribed "Laozi Xiang'er Commentary" and "Laozi Huahu Jing", and then printed them with movable type and distributed them to Taoist temples across the country. There were not many Taoist scriptures left, so he first communicated with Luoyang Taoist priests

We will study it together, and if there is something special, we will call Taoist priests from all over the country to discuss it.

As for other religions, eminent monks can study them, but they cannot publish them.

Whether it is Nestorianism, Zoroastrianism, or Manichaeism, all must be reformed according to Emperor Zhu's wishes.

After the reform, the scriptures of various religions will be uniformly printed by the imperial court and disseminated through local academic staff. They will even be sent to the Anxi Protectorate and the Mobei Kelie tribe who believe in Nestorian Christianity.

Ju Ming originally planned to ban all of these religions, but later found that it was not necessary.

Various religions have coexisted harmoniously in the local area for hundreds of years. Followers have intermarried with each other, their teachings have merged with each other, and they have even joined forces to fight against the expansion of the Desert Cult.

In such a situation, it is only necessary to provide guidance, and it would be unsightly to forcefully ban it.

With the imperial examination opening the way, can various religions still be able to compete with Confucianism?

There will definitely be a scene in the future where a Nestorian puts down the Bible, picks up the Analects of Confucius and reads it at night, comprehending the benevolence and righteousness of Confucius.

Or a Zoroastrian, who has "Avesta" on his bookshelf, but is immersed in the "Book of Songs" at his desk. He wants to understand why "Guan Guan Ju Jiu" is not about love, but Zhou Li, and it also

It is related to the two hexagrams of Qian and Kun.

The scene was too outrageous, yet extremely realistic.
