11. Waiting for night to fall

"Thank you so much, Mr. Exorcist, if anything happens to my poor Henry..." Tolkien kept thanking him. If Lu Li's face wasn't too calm, he would have wanted to hug Lu Li to express his inner emotions.

"500 shillings."

Until Lu Li interrupted Tolkien.

A few minutes later, Lu Li walked out of the house with the 500 shillings paid by Tolkien.

A thin figure in a dark dress stood in front of the door, ogling passers-by. Hearing the sound of the door opening, Oliver turned his head in surprise.

"Are you just going to stand here?"

"Have you seen a ghost?"

The two voices sounded at the same time.

"That's right." Lu Li replied. Naturally, he couldn't tell the real situation to someone like Oliver who made money by selling information.

"I don't know about the commission fee..." Oliver made it clear, his two hairy legs entangled together and rubbed against each other.

A 50 shilling denomination was handed to him, and a steady voice sounded: "500 shillings, this is your portion."

"Awesome!" Oliver cheered and jumped up on the spot. Several passers-by subconsciously turned to the bottom of their skirts, and then walked away quickly with pale faces.

Holding the 50 shillings in his hands and kissing him heavily, Oliver stared at Lu Li with an almost fanatical look.

Lu Li stood there, motionless, and his voice was slightly cold: "If you dare to attack me, I will let you go back naked."

"I just want you to experience the customs of Port Rodster. If you don't like it, forget it." Oliver was slightly disappointed, stuffed the money into his chest, and patted it with his palm.

"Very good, we can eat bean stew tonight."

"Aren't you going to make up for the overdue rent?" Lu Li put on his hat and walked down the steps to the other side of the street.

"Well……"

Oliver, who was following behind, was stunned for a moment, and suddenly recalled Mrs. Slav's explanation before going out.

"Old...boss! Are you free now?"

"What's the matter?" Lu Li walked in front and asked without looking back.

"That's it... I still have a lot of commissions there. Do you want to come with me to get them?" Oliver gritted his teeth and chose the former between Mrs. Slav and Boss Lu Li.

"Just bring it over."

"But..." Oliver couldn't think of any other ideas to lure Lu Li there, so he decided to try to tell the truth: "But Mrs. Slav wants to see you!"

"Slavic lady?"

"He is the owner of our apartment, one..."

"I know who she is, I mean, why would she want to see me."

Oliver's mind raced and he made up a random theory: "She wants to help me find out what kind of person my new boss is, um! She does it for my own good."

Lu Li, who was walking in front, stopped, turned around, and looked at Oliver with his unique black eyes.

There was obviously no emotion in those eyes, but Oliver still felt unbearable pressure, which made him almost unable to hold back from telling the truth.

But before Oliver could answer, Lu Li had already retracted his gaze and continued to walk forward.

"Not today."

It was already past noon, and when we came out, the clock in front of the wall showed the time at 1:30. For most local residents, afternoon meant "don't go too far from home", lest it be too late to return home when it gets dark.

Lu Li followed the locals when he came to his hometown, and the same was true in this regard.

Mrs. Slav's apartment is in the Black Gold District, and it takes a long time to walk there and back. Especially since Lu Li has more important things to do.

"Not today..." Oliver murmured in a low voice, and his eyes lit up: "Are you saying it's OK tomorrow?"

"Probably, if I'm safe and sound tomorrow..."

The last sentence sounded like a murmur to himself, but Oliver didn't hear it clearly.

At the end of the street, the two people who went to different places separated.

On Sailor Street, some shops selling food have opened their doors, and the aroma wafts out, blown away by the sea breeze.

Most people here only eat two meals a day: morning and afternoon.

They rarely eat at night.

A meal in the morning can give residents enough energy to work, and a meal in the afternoon is so that they will not be hungry before going to bed. Dinner? It is meaningless and unnecessary. Only rich people or nobles eat three meals a day.

At Mrs. Phillin's Bakery, workers put the freshly baked bread into the display window. Most of them are bran bread with no bran removed and a very hard texture, and a small amount of soft bread made from refined flour.

Some children in ragged clothes and with sallow complexions due to malnutrition gathered in front of the window, greedily sucking in the food coming out of the bakery and swallowing their saliva.

There is still some time before lunch, and the bakery employees are baking bread for sale.

A figure in a black coat wearing a top hat walked into the bakery, his slender body blocking part of the light outside.

The busy employee at the window raised his head and saw the figure taking off his hat. His eyes lit up and he walked over and said enthusiastically: "Mr. Lu Li, what do you want to order today?"

"Two pounds of soft bread." Lu Li said, then thought of something, and added: "Is there bean stew here?"

"We only make bread here, but Mrs. Filling can make bean stew. If you need it, I can ask Mrs. Filling to help."

"It's so troublesome."

"You're welcome, please wait a moment." The employee walked to the back kitchen and said something, then returned to the display window, took out the soft bread that had just been baked in the display window and was still steaming, and put it into a paper bag.

"Mrs. Filming will cook it soon, and we will send it to your detective agency when it is done. The bread is 8 shillings, and the pea stew is 23 shillings. You can give us 30 shillings."

Lu Li handed over the money, took the paper bag, turned around and walked out of the bakery.

The children looked at Lu Li eagerly and tugged at his dirty pants with their fingers, as if they were expecting something.

Lu Li stood in front of the bakery, waved to the children, and opened the steaming paper bag.

"Wow!"

The children cheered and surrounded Lu Li, but they did not dare to get too close and dirty Lu Li's expensive clothes. They carefully took the large piece of bread that Lu Li had broken off and thanked him crisply.

"Thank you Mr. Lu Li"

"You are a great person!"

Some adults passing by looked at him with smiles, and some neighbors who had met Lu Li a few times teased him in a friendly way, saying that Lu Li was showing kindness again.

The residents of Sailor Street are warm and polite.

They did this not only because of Lu Li's special eyes and hair color, but also because of his identity.

Lu Li is the only exorcist in Sailor Street. Just like a doctor or a scholar, everyone may need their help.

As for the children, the reason for their enthusiasm is very simple: Lu Li treats them very well.

Distributing half of the bread to the children, Lu Li returned to the detective agency amid greetings.

Not long after, the bakery staff brought bean stew, and Lu Li could actually taste the spices in it.

Apparently Mrs. Philling put a lot of thought into making this pot of stew.

Lu Li finished the bean stew and bread, washed the lunch box and returned it to the bakery, then returned to the desk of the detective agency.

Sitting in a chair, Lu Li was as motionless as a statue, quietly waiting for the night to fall.
