One hundred and forty-four. Changes in identity

The illusion of Midnight City is not real.

But the story is not false.

Perhaps the seawater once flooded the beach, but when the tide receded, traces may still remain on the gravel.

In the depths of primitive darkness, the outline of the World Tree is like a lighthouse, silently guiding the direction.

The latent image potion does not work in Midnight City because undead souls with absolutely no good intentions lurk in the shadows. With his humanity replenished, Lu Li releases the dreamer, wandering on the dividing line between reality and dream, traveling underground.

The dormant shadows on the surface were revealed at the edge of the dream halo. As he approached the giant tree peacefully, Lu Li emerged from the ground and emerged in a collapsed and dilapidated mansion. Looking ahead through the damaged and crumbling ceiling, he was leaving

The giant tree is still some distance away. The miscalculated distance and speed cause some deviations in the scene imagined by the dreamer.

Lu Li corrected the scene again, confirmed that there was nothing strange around him, and then submerged into the ruins again.

Two minutes later, Lu Li arrived at the outer edge of the World Tree, the World Peak Observation Deck.

This was once one of the most famous attractions in Midnight City. It is said that when the weather is clear, you can even see the majestic World Ridge Mountains. This is of course false. Even the Alchemy Tower cannot overlook the World Ridge Mountains thousands of miles away, let alone only about three meters away.

A ten-meter-high observation tower.

But regardless of the observation tower owner's commercial praise here, this is indeed the best angle to observe the World Tree.

Even withered and withered, the branches of the World Tree still hold up the sky like the Optimus Pillar. The giant tree is dark and pitch-black, but there are patches of fire under its feet. The outlines of ants are as small as wandering around the roots. The sand, gravel and soil are covered by a cart.

The cart was rolled out and mounds of earth were piled up around the giant tree.

Earth dwellers occupy this place.

Lu Li looked down at the foot of the giant tree. The scene in front of him was not surprising. Since the profit-seeking earth dwellers cooperated with the swamp to devour Midnight City, they would not miss the legacy left behind.

The knowledge that humans had paid a heavy price for from the Exorcist Era to the Dark Ages was like scraps being moved out of the giant tree one by one. Lu Li could only watch and could do nothing.

At most, make a mental note to ask the Swamp Mother to hire White Gloves to acquire the valuable knowledge scattered in the old sewers when you return.

Since the earth dweller's sacred weapon did not appear when he was captured, it was probably sheltered here.

Unable to take the risk of sneaking into the giant tree, Lu Li took one last look at the ants moving under his feet, retreated into the shadows behind him, stepped down the floor, and submerged into the ground.

Walking through the rock formations that silently spoke of tens of thousands of years, Lu Li broke into a mole hole that suddenly existed underground.

The cave is so low that one can only stand inside with folded waist. There is no exit to the outside world. A skeleton wrapped in rotten clothes lies quietly next to the fluorite that seems to have existed forever. Next to it are discarded bones that have been corroded into rotten wood.

Iron pickaxe.

Lu Li discovered the cutting marks on the rock wall and the pile of stones half-buried with empty cans behind him. He then followed the pile of rocks blocking the passage and walked upwards, emerging into a basement soaked in water.

Holes blocked by sand and stone appear in the walls where the masonry has been knocked out.

Lu Li seemed to see something strange approaching on the surface. A desperate man wielded a pickaxe and dug a tunnel in the basement. He piled the excavated sand and rocks behind him to form a cave that followed him. Unfortunately, this whimsical thought in extreme despair failed.

.He didn't last long enough to escape, and the cave became his tomb.

Lu Li, who appeared in the basement, suddenly returned the same way he came. It was not that he wanted to bury the bones, but that the cave reminded Lu Li of some truth that could still be verified.

At the end of the street in the distance, firelight emanated from the foot of the Giant Tree Academy.

Lu Li got into the ground before the strange things around him came and moved quietly towards the depths and the Giant Tree Academy in the distance. He had to control the distance carefully so that he would not be discovered by the earth dwellers' sacred weapons because he was too close to the surface, nor would he be too close to the surface.

Go deep underground and get caught in the swamp.

Fortunately and sadly, the Giant Tree Academy left behind enough wealth that even after several months, the earth dwellers have not emptied the giant tree, and the dark space between the giant tree and the swamp has also been temporarily shelved by them.

This is Lu Li's best chance to sneak into the dark space.

In the dark cave like a mine tunnel, Lu Li stepped out of the rock wall and away from the tree hole connecting the giant tree and the swamp. He changed the dreamer into an oil lamp and walked forward along the empty and quiet passage.

Following the route in his memory, Lu Li came to a gap that was blocked by gravel and painted with special paint to blend with the rock wall.

Lu Li's guess has been verified.

Now, I just hope it's not too late.

The dreamer reappeared, and a hazy halo shrouded Lu Li as he stepped into the gap between the rock formations and came to a space inlaid with fluorescent light that illuminated a dimly lit village.

Different from the two visits in the fantasy world, Lu Li no longer needed the latent image potion. The dream that blurred reality was enough to protect Lu Li from the attacks of the residents who gathered around him, but it also blocked the cluster consciousness lingering around him.

The residents surrounded the dreamer, and the dreamer wrapped Lu Li. Lu Li walked through the village and came to the core altar of the underground city.

Awaken the silver-haired girl who is sitting beside the earthen pot in peaceful contemplation like a statue.

"Who are you?"

Margaret asked the trespasser in the dungeon nimbly.

"Exorcist Lu Li."

"I've heard about you..." Margaret observed Lu Li: "Did you arrive unexpectedly, a commission from the Holy Light Team, or are you looking for treasure?"

"None of that."

Margaret knows nothing about what is happening in the outside world, whether it is the fall of the city in the middle of the night or the illusion.

Lu Li didn't explain yet, he just wanted to take her away.

"If you can come here, then they can't stop you." Margaret nodded in agreement, picked up the earthen jar next to her, and walked towards Lu Li with bare feet.

The residents wanted to stop Margaret and isolate them, but Lu Li seemed to be floating on the edge of the world. The halo of the dream covered the residents in the way but did not harm them. He came to Margaret and was included in the dream.

"There has been a sudden change in the swamp. It is almost impossible for you to go back to the old sewer through the swamp." Lu Li looked around at the numb residents surrounding him: "Wait for me here. I will help you go back to the old sewer after the matter is resolved."

"They don't believe you."

Margaret holding a clay pot translates for cluster consciousness.

"It doesn't matter what you say."

Lu Li shook his head gently and explained the facts: "You can't stop me. You have no choice but to believe."

Leaving the dungeon without being blocked, Lu Li took Margaret back the same way.

"According to legend, you are just a human being." Margaret asked during this period, observing Lu Li with her quiet eyes.

"Indeed I am."

After passing the peak of the world, Lu Li surfaced briefly, allowing Margaret to see the current Midnight City.

The dream faded and Lu Li returned to his black cat form.

"Alienation potion?" Margaret turned her attention to the ants at the foot of the giant tree: "Are those earth dwellers?"

"Well, this is the truth you have to accept first: Midnight City has fallen."
