Two hundred and twenty-three. Basement

Whispers and some kind of rhythmic breathing were blocked by the wooden door.

"Aren't we going down?" Anna lowered her voice subconsciously to avoid disturbing some beings in the basement.

"She asked us to hand over the items in the basement to the investigators, but didn't say to go get them."

Lu Li said, returned to the table, picked up the oil lamp, and left the house where the beak masked figure was.

The figure reappeared outside the building. Lu Li walked through the alley among the ruins and came to the adjacent theoretical block. He walked into the faded red paint phone booth and dialed the number.

The waiting time was long, until mist appeared on the glass of the phone booth, the call was connected, and a lazy female voice came out of the phone, like a sleepy voice: "Who is it?"

Head of Belfast Regional Investigator, Rachel.

This week it's her turn to man the base.

"I'm Lu Li."

"...Oh, I remember, black gem, right?"

Ignoring Rachel's strange associations and adjectives, Lu Li told her about the letter from the beak mask figure and the situation in her basement.

"Okay... I know what you are talking about, can you bring it?" The tone of the other person is still lazy. You can imagine a graceful woman lying on her side on the velvet bed, holding the microphone casually.

"No." Lu Li replied.

"I got it...I'll be right over there. Where the hell are my shoes..." Rachel sighed helplessly, a distant complaint sounded from the phone, and then the phone was hung up.

Lu Li put down the phone, suddenly noticed something, and turned his head to look into space.

"It's a woman." Anna's seemingly casual inquiry sounded in the small space.

"yes."

"Is it beautiful?"

"Um."

Anna suddenly didn't know what to say and fell silent.

Walking out of the phone booth, a chill hit his face. Lu Li held up his umbrella and returned to the 16th house in the old warm neighborhood, waiting for Rachel to arrive.

Maybe the matter was not urgent, maybe I had just been woken up and fell asleep again, maybe it was a woman's nature, but an hour later, the sound of approaching carriages came belatedly in the rain.

A luxurious carriage with the family's logo parked in front of the building. A servant in black evening dress held up an umbrella, opened the curtain and bowed slightly to welcome the white arm stretched out from the carriage.

The arm stretched out for a few seconds, but without any help, Rachel had no choice but to lower her head and get out of the car.

She was wearing a gorgeous long skirt that reached calf length, as if she was going to attend a noble ball, instead of going to a gloomy ruined street in a gloomy weather, entering a gloomy abandoned house and walking down to a gloomy basement.

With two crisp sounds, Rachel's heels fell to the ground and she took the umbrella from the servant's hand.

"Hmph..." An unknown humming sound came from the void next to Lu Li.

"Wait for us here." Rachel told the servant, her eyes narrowed slightly and fell on the empty space beside Lu Li.

"My assistant." Lu Li knew what she was looking at.

"uh-huh."

Rachel raised her head slightly and walked into the building with Lu Li.

Back in front of the utility room door, Lu Li stopped and said, "That thing is inside."

Rachel held the doorknob and opened it, and the maliciousness and whispers reappeared. She wiped her palms with a handkerchief nonchalantly and stretched out her hand towards Lu Li.

Lu Li placed the oil lamp handle in his white palm.

Rachel took the oil lamp and stepped into the basement.

"careful."

Lu Li said suddenly, and when Rachel turned back to her, he added: "You are wearing high heels."

Rachel chuckled carelessly and stepped into the basement with an oil lamp.

Lu Li stayed outside the basement door, watching the graceful figure in the light and crisp footsteps walking down the steps and turning to a blind corner that he couldn't see.

Only a faint light extends from the edge.

The silence lasted for dozens of seconds, and suddenly a sharp scream echoed to the ground, merged into nothingness, and disappeared.

After a few seconds, Rachel returned, holding something in her other hand.

As he got closer, Lu Li saw clearly that it was a strange wooden animal sculpture, with its mouth wide open in fear.

"The rest is yours."

Rachel returned to the ground, handed the oil lamp to Lu Li, left a word and a chuckle, turned and left the house.

The disturbing breathing and whispering in the basement had disappeared.

Lu Li turned his head and looked out the window and saw Rachel returning to the carriage on the street, and then the wheels turned and drove away from the building.

"She seems very powerful..." Anna emerged and muttered softly.

"Maybe."

It is difficult for exorcists to distinguish their abilities by "powerful or not". Human beings are fragile, and exorcists are also unable to withstand more damage and have no extra lives. Their abilities depend on the homologous objects and knowledge they possess.

.

The former is usually only applicable to a very small number of monsters that can be directly harmed.

Knowledge represents the true ability of exorcists. After all, when facing a strange thing that can cause instant death, knowing what it is is far more important than anything else.

For example, the Shadow of Stealing Fire will extinguish the light around people and plunge them into dark despair. But if you know what it is, just step on its shadow and it will automatically retreat.

Breaking down a door violently is always the stupidest and most time-consuming thing to do. Smart people will just look for the key - or pick the lock.

There is still an uncomfortable cold atmosphere in the basement. Perhaps the aura of the evil things taken away by Rachel has not dissipated, or perhaps there are other things in the basement. But since Rachel left it alone, it means that the things inside are difficult to harm.

Lu Li.

Holding an oil lamp, Lu Li stepped down to the basement where the temperature was getting colder and colder.

The soles of his shoes stepped on the stone tile floor of the basement. Lu Li looked around and lit the candle on the stand.

The dim candlelight came on, and the basement with two light sources became slightly brighter.

The basement is not very spacious, and there is a chandelier hanging from the low ceiling that cannot be lit.

Lu Li walked to the desk, and something in the corner of the desk attracted Lu Li's attention.

When his eyes fell, it was a diary on the desk. The black cover was covered with a layer of dust. A voice sounded in Lu Li's heart, calling Lu Li to pick it up.

After his gaze paused briefly, Lu Li's attention fell on another part of the desk, a stone box made of black stone.

Shihe Luli was very familiar with it. It was an obsidian-like matt color stone, which was made of deep sea stone.

What is sealed inside seems conceivable.

Several pieces of parchment were spread on the table. The contents on them were messy and unreadable, as if they were just scribbles.

The wooden box in the corner is empty, with only some used tools stacked in the bottom box.

Apart from these, there is nothing else in the basement.

"We don't have any use for these things." Anna sighed in frustration. "And they're not valuable either."

"On the contrary."

Lu Li didn't think so.

"They're valuable."
