One hundred and sixty-eight. Changing human nature
The "carriage" was left in the backyard. It was easy to miss the survivors in the carriage, and the church was not too far from the safe house.
In the dark and humid long street, Anna held Lu Li's arm and walked on the street. They were like a pair of lovers.
The reason that made Anna's eyes become more crooked was that Lu Li took the initiative to let her hold her arm - although the reason was that Lu Li needed to spy on the Upside Down City and had to be supported by someone to avoid hitting pedestrians.
On the way to the church, there was a shrill scream that didn't seem to be disguised and pierced the night sky, not far away from them. Lu Li and the others arrived late, and when they arrived, the poor guy had been surrounded by several weird ones. Among them, Lu Li and the others arrived late.
A middle-aged man with a bloody face cursed loudly. It should have had its own flesh and blood, if it hadn't been for the human scream.
Anna showed a hint of fear and panic when it looked over. This was of course fake. Lu Li could almost see the devil's tail swinging behind Anna.
Lu Li acquiesced to Anna's plot. Compared to the previous Anna, the now flesh-and-blood Anna who takes the initiative to do things and express emotions is more like a human being.
As expected, the monster took the bait. It did not dare to disturb the other monsters and secretly followed Lu Li and Anna. Anna deliberately hugged Lu Li and walked into a dark alley not far away.
Weird followed him into the alley, and dozens of seconds later, only Lu Lianna walked out from the other side of the alley.
"How much humanity is there now?" Anna asked softly.
She calculated that after entering the Upside Down City, they killed about thirty monsters. Although they were all as weak as ghosts, they added up to a lot.
"1.2...or 1.3."
Human nature is difficult to quantify, so Lu Li could only rely on intuition to roughly guess. Coupled with the increase in the Doomsday Apocalypse Book, human nature should be around 2.5 ordinary people.
This means that every 50 monsters killed will only increase the number of people. Of course, the good news is that there are tens of thousands of monsters in the Upside Down City.
It's a pity that Anna can't do it alone. With Salvation, she can clear an entire block in less than ten minutes.
Echo Church, this almost 300-year-old cathedral has been renovated several times but it has not lost the characteristics of that period - the towering top of the hat is like an ancient knight's spear piercing the sky, and the edge is carved with demigod stone statues of gods, which is compassionate.
Looking down at the strange figure disguised as a human being.
It was exactly three o'clock in the morning when Lu Li and the others arrived. The clock on the tower jingled, and the long tones of the three bells echoed throughout every inch of the land.
There are rows of tombstones standing behind the low wall, and they are more suitable for this scene than at any time. A figure in a robe was digging with a shovel in the open space next to the church, not caring that the wet soil stained the corners of his clothes.
Lu Li looked up and saw that he was no longer in Upside Down City, so he and Anna walked over.
The figure spotted them, put down the shovel, and stared at the approaching Lu Li from the darkness under his cloak.
"Emma and I are from the same place." Lu Li said directly.
"We have been waiting for your arrival." The figure nodded gently, and then looked at the church door behind him. "They are all inside."
The figure continued to raise the shovel and dig into the wet soil.
Behind him, there were a dozen pits on the brown ground that could accommodate another body.
Without saying anything, Lu Li walked towards the church.
Solemn murmurs echoed in my ears as I approached the church. It seemed to be singing, but also like prayer. The church was dotted with dim lights, and dozens of robed figures with bowed heads sat among the benches. Mass-like whispers came from among them.
Scattered out in time, gathered together, echoed and washed in the echoing church, forming a strange and weird scene.
Frankly speaking, no one would believe that these strangely behaving believers could be human beings.
Lu Li and Anna stood at the door waiting, not disturbing their prayers.
After a few minutes, their whispers gradually became fainter and they entered meditation.
It was hard to imagine that a church with dozens of people would become so quiet. But soon, the silence was broken by the sound of footsteps. The figure on the podium walked among the benches, softly calling for a believer to follow him, and walked towards Lu Li and Anna at the door.
The believer who was called opened his cloak and revealed Emma's face: "Mr. Lu Li, Miss Anna, he is our priest."
She introduced each other.
The priest's old voice came from under the cloak: "Emma told me about your strange ability... That is the talent given to you by God, right?"
"Maybe."
Lu Li really couldn't find a reason why he could spy on the Upside Down City. Maybe it was because of human nature?
Anna stared at Emma with disgust, not liking her betrayal and informing, but Lu Li didn't care. He had no intention of hiding this ability, if they didn't have a conspiracy.
"Welcome, children." The priest opened his arms and said softly.
"But you didn't even show your face." Anna said sarcastically.
"It's just an ugly face." The priest replied slowly and nonchalantly, walking to the confessional in the corner. "Please follow me. There will be some tests before joining."
"We don't plan to join you." Lu Li said.
But the departing godfather didn't hear it, or didn't care... Emma followed behind like a devout believer.
"You make the decision." Anna said gently to Lu Li, who was looking at her.
Lu Li nodded, and because of some speculation, he chose to follow.
The priest walked into the confession room, while Emma stood at the door. Looking at the hazy figure behind the hollow wooden window, Lu Li felt something familiar.
"Just a few simple questions... have you ever believed in gods?"
"No."
"Will you help those in need?"
"meeting."
"Would you sacrifice yourself to save others?"
This question made Lu Li stop answering immediately. At this time, Anna next to him answered for Lu Li: "We can't."
"It's selfish!" Emma said excitedly, her eyes looking at Lu Li and Anna changed from friendly to disgust——
"Emma... don't let your emotions guide your thinking."
The old voice coming from the confessional made Emma lower her head and hide her emotions. The wooden door of the confessional was pushed open, and the priest came out with regret in his tone: "You can't be His people."
"If your ears weren't for decoration, you should be able to hear what Lu Li said." As Emma's attitude changed, Anna no longer concealed her hostility towards them.
The priest didn't care about the conflict and asked gently: "Can I ask you a favor?"
"What."
"There is something strange among us. It is well disguised... Please help us find it."
It wasn't too troublesome, so Lu Li agreed: "I can't do it in the church, so come outside to the cemetery."
A few minutes later, all the believers gathered outside the church, and Lu Li also found out the strange thing among them.
"What are you going to do with it?" Lu Li asked the priest beside him.
"God will punish it for us."
Anna didn't like this depressing atmosphere, so Lu Li didn't plan to stay any longer. Before leaving, he thought of something and asked the priest: "Will you let me remember it?"
