Chapter 37 The bankrupt old aristocracy

Daniel's hands touched the books, and he started reading from the bottom one by one.

The old butler was waiting with a lantern beside him, but his hand was soft and he was afraid of breaking the lantern and lighting all these treasures, so he kept changing the handheld.

As a senior investigator, Daniel searched very patiently. He didn't know which book Klein would hide the secret in. It might not even be in the book, but he was convinced that this row of bookshelves must be the key clue.

.

Finally, his hand stopped and he held on to a book that he couldn't take out.

"An ancient mechanism? Or was it built in recent times? Do you know that?"

Daniel asked the old man beside him.

The old man obviously didn't know, and his expression was not fake.

Daniel continued to think about how to activate the bookshelf mechanism for the book that could not be taken out. Finally, he moved the book next to it and turned the book ninety degrees. With a crisp sound, the entire bookshelf turned inward.

It turned 90 degrees and slowly opened.

"The master has never talked about this secret room." After the initial surprise, the old man's mood stabilized very quickly.

Daniel took the lantern from the old man's hand and slowly reached in.

There is nothing special inside, just a very simple living room with a sofa, coffee table, and fireplace.

"It seems that the place where Lord Klein meets his guests is actually here."

Daniel checked the sofa and sat down directly after finding that there was no problem.

"Didn't you say there is an office upstairs? So where is the place where your master meets those strange guests?"

The old man lit the candle on the coffee table with a match: "Only one guest was invited into the library by the master. Those guys who looked like thieves met the master upstairs."

While he was talking, Daniel rummaged through the things on the coffee table, then stood up and searched around the corners of the room.

He found a letter and looked directly at the signature on the envelope.

"The guest you are talking about is the noble lady you talked about before? Dame Remilia Lugosi?"

The butler didn't mention the guest, but Daniel guessed it, which made him slightly surprised and opened his eyes a lot.

However, Dardaniel said: "I didn't guess it. There is a letter here signed with Lugosi's name and the seal of their family, but there is nothing in it. Do you know where the things are?"

The old housekeeper didn't even know about this secret room, and certainly didn't know where the master would hide the secretly received letters.

Dardaniel searched again by himself and found the letter that was taken out in the lower grid. The content above was very short and was written by Countess Lugosi to Klein.

The content is as follows:

Keep the chart well and wait until I notify you of the date of departure. The revival of the Besarius family is in sight.

With just this sentence, Countess Remilia Lugosi did not waste any more words.

Fortunately, the key clues inside were captured by Daniel.

Remilia Lugosi mentioned nautical charts and travel, which are most likely related to navigation. And the reason why Lord Klein disappeared is that he went to sea?

Countess Lugosi said that the revival of Klein's family is in sight, which may be a bait to attract Lord Klein to go to sea.

Dardaniel continued to rummage in that compartment, and then searched the room, but found no other letters.

Now there is no news about the Countess missing or going to sea. So, if this is the only and last communication letter between the two parties, Countess Lugosi's tone seems to be asking Lord Klein to wait, but in the end, it is only Lord Klein who follows

His accompanying "knight" disappeared.

Based on this simple sentence, Dardaniel directly deduced the most likely truth:

Baroness Lugosi invited Lord Klein to go to sea. There was a secret hidden in a certain location on the nautical chart. That secret could help the Besarius family revive. But in the end, Klein deceived the baroness and went out with the chart.

.

So, why did he secretly go to sea without telling Remilia Lugosi?

Perhaps the location marked on the navigation map contains gold and diamonds, a large amount of wealth, and if there is one more person, part of it will be taken away, which is why Klein betrayed the Baroness.

The only useful thing in this secret room is this letter. Daniel can't find anything else. Maybe next, he has to visit Countess Lugosi.

"Is there anywhere else? Well, the office upstairs."

The old housekeeper yawned and led Daniel upstairs again.

The office was located at the end of the corridor on the third floor. The old housekeeper took out the old key and opened the lock, pushed the wooden door open, and the scene inside unfolded in front of Daniel.

Klein allowed his servants to clean the house when he was not at home, so the things inside were neatly arranged and very clean.

As before, Dardaniel searched the objects in the room very carefully, and after rummaging through them, he carefully put them back to others, so the speed was very slow, until the grandfather clock next to him rang four in the morning.

"What is this? Why is it locked?" Daniel took out a booklet.

"It's the family's account book. Without the owner's permission..."

"Open it!" Dardaniel suddenly became tough, "My intuition tells me that there must be a secret about your master's disappearance inside."

Intuition is false, but the invisible technique is true. Daniel was able to find this booklet because of the ink he dropped on the ground earlier.

The old housekeeper was very hesitant. Seeing that Daniel was ready to violently destroy it, he could only grit his teeth and take out the hidden key.

Sure enough, after opening the account book, Daniel discovered some interesting contents.

There were several accounts during this period, which were Lord Klein's investments and transactions in various fields. The amounts were huge, and most of them were losses. This shows that the Besarius family's finances are very tight.

Then there are several large loans and some expenditures on foreign affairs.

This foreign affairs expenditure was very interesting. In the middle of the ledger, Daniel discovered that Klein had paid a group of people mercenary fees and asked them to go to Jotun to spread the bounty order for Fanatic Specterfire.

This made Daniel think of those strange guests.

Continuing to scroll down, he also found in the mezzanine of the account room that Klein had to cooperate with the Privy Council to help them organize the underground trading market in Yotun City because of debts.

After the Blackwater Catastrophe, the sudden appearance of the source of fanatical ghost fire made Klein very jealous, so Klein used the black market he built to buy fanatic ghost fire at a low price, and then traded with people in the Privy Council to earn the difference.

Use this to pay off your debts.

This seems to confirm Dardaniel's previous speculation that the disappearance of Lord Klein Besarius was most likely a treasure hunt at sea.
