Chapter 8 Getting better

Five days passed in a flash, and both Cheng Xue and Li Hui were getting better.

Every morning, Li Hui would take Li Heng out for exercise, jog around the village and then come back for dinner. After dinner, he would go to work and come back in the evening.

Cheng Xue teaches three children how to read at home, tidying up this and that, and the day passes.

After drinking the decoction for five days, my body obviously improved.

The last time I came to town with Li Heng, it took half an hour. This time I only had one stick of incense. I also carried more than six kilograms of stuff on me, so I didn't feel tired.

When entering the city, go to Sitong Bank first. Li Hui specifically asked the forest farm manager.

The bank was opened by the Liangyan court. Although the price is higher, it is guaranteed and will not turn the banknote into waste paper in an instant.

With her banknotes in hand, she felt relaxed and started buying.

Different from the last time I came to town, this time I was shopping around, but I wasn’t reluctant to search.

Cotton, cotton cloth, big bathtub, roasted chicken, pork, river carp, vegetables, seasonings, roasted knives...

The forest farm is closed today, so Li Hui asked Dong Cheng and Guo Dake to come over to work.

As modern people, we really can't bear to take a bath every few months. So we decided to remove the kang in the first room at the west end, build a firewall, and turn it into a bathroom.

I bought a lot of meat, and I am grateful for what happened last time.

It was the same mule cart we hired last time. The driver remembered her and said hello:

"My dear lady, she looks more energetic today. Is she in good health?"

"Please bear with me. It's much better."

The driver helped carry everything into the car and went to the steward to register and get the license plate.

They have to record every trip they make, and not everyone can be a driver, so they need to know the details and have a guarantor.

Cheng Xue put cotton, cotton cloth, vegetables and other items into the bathtub.

This not only saves space, but also makes the bathtub stable.

After leaving the city, the coachman chatted with her and talked about a lot of recent events in other villages.

Why did the daughter-in-law from this village go back to her parents' home, the sisters-in-law from that village had a fight, and the house from another village was set on fire when they danced to the great gods...

They talked about all the topics, either the parents were short-tempered, or they were dancing to the gods and inviting immortals.

She just listens and enjoys it, and occasionally expresses her personal opinions.

"The young lady is right. This family is not strong-willed, and the husband's family will not treat their daughter-in-law as their own daughter. Anyway, if the old Zhao family treats my daughter like this, I will definitely not be able to do it."

"How old is the eldest brother's daughter?"

"How can I have a daughter? I have six boys."

Uh...

One more one, you can summon the dragon.

After chatting and laughing, we returned to Wanghe Village. Just like last time, the mule cart took a detour home. I helped carry things into the house and asked for a bowl of water. I guess I talked too much.

Cheng Xue watched him drive away, then went to the study to hide the banknotes.

It’s not clear what the price of a house in the county is, but they decided to exchange it for 500 yuan to spare, preferring more than less.

Regardless of the amount of money left behind, two betrothal gifts, two dowries, and going to Beijing to take the exam all cost money.

The gossip I heard today is basically the mother-in-law trying to tease her daughter-in-law. She has two daughters, and she needs to be capable to support her daughters.

Looking at the medical books on the table, I decided to start studying after I was busy for a while, and first thoroughly read the only book on gynecology.

When women who live in wealthy families get sick, they tend to avoid medical treatment. But if the doctor is a woman, then there is no need to worry, and you can talk about anything.

The study was locked again and returned to the main room. Li Yue was looking at the pork belly on the stove with the corner of his mouth twitching.

"Mom, why did you buy so much meat? It's a lot of money."

By visual inspection, it weighed more than ten kilograms, which was worth more than one tael of silver.

"It's rare that you, Uncle Dong San and Uncle Guo, come to our house for dinner. There's enough meat to eat. What's more, it's cold and we can hold it in. The leftovers are fried with heavy salt. I'll put some in the cooking later to make it more fragrant!" Cheng Xue said as he spoke.

Cut meat.

To make children fatter, you must not just think about it, but put it into action.

"Tangtang, you take Tiedan to pick beans and collect the racks along the way."

"Oh, okay."

Li Yue went out to work, and Cheng Xue brought a big basin, spread it with a thick mat, put Li Huai in it, and asked Li Tian to sit outside and watch.

After weaning, Li Huai obviously eats a lot of food. Although he eats a very simple diet, he can eat less than half a bowl of millet soup with egg yolk in one meal.

Watching the baby while cooking makes me feel at ease.

The braised pork and fish are stewed first, then the remaining meat is fried in a small stove, and the oil and meat are put into the jar.

Li Yue picked back three baskets of beans and two baskets of eggplants, all of which were piled in the yard. Cheng Xue took the pots and went out to pick them, leaving the remaining shredded vegetables and pickled garlic eggplants.

Stocking up on vegetables is a habit inherited from our ancestors, and she can carry it forward and add some variety.

"Hey, Tiedan Niang is busy!"

As the patriarch Li Fang spoke, he opened the door and entered the courtyard. Cheng Xue pointed to the bench beside him and said:

"Second uncle, sit down, what's the matter?"

A full five days passed after that day. I thought the old man could endure it any longer, but he came in a hurry.

Li Fang said "Alas" repeatedly and said sarcastically:

"Talk in the yard? What are your new rules?"

Under Xu Geng's "vigorous publicity", almost everyone in the village knew that the four children of the Li family were named without any genealogy.

Cheng Xue focused on picking beans and eggplants without raising her head.

"The second uncle's talk is really interesting. What are the rules and regulations? Old farmers are so particular about it. If the second uncle is not used to it, let's go into the house and talk. I'm just busy doing it."

"How can I enter the house after you've said all this? Let's just say this."

"Ah, that's okay." Cheng Xue continued to work, still not looking at him.

Li Fang couldn't have an attack and could only sulk secretly.

"That's it. Tiedan is 7 years old during the Chinese New Year. When do you plan to send him to the clan school? What I mean is to send him to the clan school tomorrow. The sooner the better, the less tiring he will be."

Cheng Xue raised her head this time, pretending to be sorry and said:

"Thank you, uncle, but this kid is uncertain and I can't send him away. Yesterday, I filled the rat hole in the barn with water and asked me to give him a good beating."

It is true that the mice holes were filled with water, but she did not fight them, and continued to fill them along with them.

Li Fang rolled his eyes and waved carelessly——

"When you are seven or eight years old, there is no child who doesn't like dogs. Just don't worry about your child..."

"Forget it, I won't give it away." Cheng Xue interrupted him, "If he touches or drops the things in the clan school, I have no money to compensate."

"It's okay, why are you worried about me being there?" Li Fang insisted.

I don’t worry because you’re here!

Cheng Xue curled her lips and continued to shake her head.

"I'm sorry, my second uncle. I'll wait two more years for him to make a decision. I'm sick now and have spent a lot on medicine. If he wants to create some unwarranted famine for me, I can't bear it."

If this old guy hadn't been surrounded by talented people, he wouldn't have been able to be a clan leader or be in charge of clan science. He looks shrewd, but in fact he doesn't have much of a mind. He puts all his little calculations on his face and treats everyone as a fool.

"It's not that serious, you see..."

"Second uncle, I'm really busy today. I won't chat with you anymore. I have to go cook first."

After Cheng Xue finished speaking, she stood up and left without giving him a chance to stop her...
