Chapter 3 Settlement

In terms of urban construction alone, Cape Town in the 19th century may not be as good as some towns in remote mountainous areas of the Republic in the 21st century. The buildings on both sides of the streets are dilapidated and dirty, the shops have almost no signboards, and there are almost no signs on the whole street.

A building with more than three floors, this is still the relatively prosperous Adélie Street in Cape Town.

Ordinarily, Cape Town, as the capital of Cape Colony, should be quite prosperous. In fact, when Rock walked out of the hospital gate, it was just ten o'clock in the morning, but there were almost no businesses open for business on both sides of the street, and there were very few pedestrians on the street.

Unfortunately, most of the people were in ragged clothes. Rock even saw some white people without shoes, just stepping barefoot in the mud mixed with horse dung.

Looking at the high leather boots issued by the police station on his feet, Rock finally had his first impression of the nineteenth century. The world was not friendly to Rock, but it was not bad either.

The police station where Rock works is not far from Jonathan Jackson's hospital. Just walk along the street and turn left for two blocks. You can already see the large vermilion iron gate of the police station from a distance. This is Cape Town.

Government Street in the center of London is where most of the city government agencies are located. Next to the police station is the oldest church in Cape Town. Opposite is the Government Street Public Park. The environment of the street is pretty good, and there are roadside facilities.

The oil-fired street lamps are specially lit every night. The ground of the entire street is paved with blue strips of stone. It may have been raining in the past two days. The bluestone slabs are wet and look like a light ink landscape painting.

This finally gave Rock some hope for his future life.

Rock doesn't want to work in an environment full of sewage and mud all day long.

Although Rock's rank in the Huayong Camp was corporal, when he came to Cape, Rock had to start from scratch, so now he is just an ordinary police officer.

Of course, the appointment of ordinary police officers will not alarm the police chief. In fact, Roark only needs to report to his immediate supervisor before he can rejoin the job. The supervisor responsible for managing Roark is named Austin Burns, who is also a white British man.

He had served in the colonial army and was said to be somewhat related to the Chief of Police, August Russell.

Austin Burns has been in trouble recently. He is responsible for the security of the port area, which was originally a lucrative place, but at the same time the security situation is also the most complicated.

The defeat of the British troops on the front line has led to a sharp deterioration of the security situation in Cape Town. In the past week, there have been many attacks on patrol officers in Cape Town. Austin Burns's men suffered heavy losses. The entire Cape Town Police Department has six police officers.

Patrol officers were killed, four of them Austin Burns' men.

In order to strengthen the ability of patrol officers to fight back when they are attacked, Police Chief August Russell decided to equip all patrol officers with weapons. However, this caused problems again, because before this, most police officers had no experience in using weapons at all.

Therefore, patrol officers also need to receive training in the use of relevant weapons. Otherwise, patrolling with guns on the streets will be equivalent to delivering weapons to rioters, which will cause greater chaos.

"Sir, Luo, who was hospitalized after being attacked some time ago, is back. He requested to return to the team." Austin Pence's assistant Beerbohm reported.

"Okay, you can figure it out." Austin Burns was not in the mood to deal with these matters, not even in the mood to meet Roque.

"Yes sir." Beerbohm's face showed an expression that he knew he had.

"Wait a minute, Luo? He seems to have served in the Huayong Camp?" Austin Burns suddenly remembered Luo Ke's resume.

"Yes, sir, Luo once served in the Huayong Camp. His military rank was corporal. Corporal is also the highest military rank a Chinese can get in the Huayong Camp." Beerbohm knew Luo Ke's resume very well. In this regard, he was better than Austin.

Pence is more competent.

"Bring him to see me." Thinking of the batch of Webley revolvers in the warehouse that were about to be equipped with patrol officers, Austin Burns suddenly became interested in Rock.

Soon, Rock was standing in front of Austin Burns.

It has to be said that in terms of police appearance alone, Rock is almost impeccable. After all, his height of 1.8 meters is outstanding even among white people. Rock is not like most Chinese police officers and Indian police officers.

He shrank in front of his superiors and did not dare to express himself. At the very least, while standing at attention, Roark dared to look Austin Burns in the eyes. This allowed Austin Burns to feel Roark's confidence without feeling provoked.

.Roark grasped this measure very well.

"Relax, Corporal. You have served in the Huayong Camp. I want to know what you know and whether you have any experience in using a revolver." Although Austin Burns had a little appreciation for Rock, Rock still

It's far from enough to make Austin Pence look at him differently, so Austin Pence is straightforward.

This question is too broad and difficult to answer, and Austin Pence seems to have ignored the fact that there are more than 30 Chinese police officers in the Cape Town Police Department. They are all from Huayong Camp, but their English is not very good.

Although they have all received simple English training, their English proficiency is not high enough. Under normal circumstances, a Chinese police officer may not be able to fully answer Austin Pence's question in English.

Of course, this is no problem for Rock: "Sir, I received complete infantry training at Huayong Camp and have excellent shooting results, but I have not received pistol training. All our equipment is Martini Henry rifles."

Rock told the truth and did not exaggerate his experience. Austin Burns once served in the colonial troops, and the equipment of the colonial troops was no secret to Austin Burns.

"Okay, get back to work, Corporal." When Austin Burns couldn't get what he wanted, he immediately felt disinterested.

Roque didn't take it seriously. This is the attitude of superiors towards subordinates these days. Don't expect to get much humanistic care from superiors. What's more, Roque is Chinese and his status in the police station is not even as good as that of Indians, at least most Indians.

He is fluent in English and can flatter his superiors fluently.

Returning to the patrolman's lounge, Rock did not remember to ask the sergeant to assign work. Instead, he first went to find his former partner Kunal, with whom Rock still had an account to settle.

As you can tell from his name, Kunal is an Indian. A week ago, Rock and Kunal went on patrol together. When they were attacked, Kunal ran away immediately, leaving Rock to face each other alone.

There were six or seven people, but Rock was brutally beaten.

Ordinarily, with Rock's skill, he might not be able to fight, but the Rock of the past was not the Rock of now. He did not dare to kill when facing a white man, and as a result, Rock almost lost his life.

Now that Rock has recovered, those attackers will talk about it later, and Kunal must settle the account first.
