Chapter 328 Pan Shu, who has different opinions, the ancient ritual of eating melons

Pan Shu handed Sun Quan a piece of fresh cold melon and advised him softly: "Your Majesty's illness has not recovered yet, so don't get angry. In a few years, if our country accumulates more strength, we will be able to defeat Wei and welcome him."

Princess Dahu returned to Jianye."

Although Pan Shu said so, hoping to welcome back Sun Dahu, in her heart she really didn't want Sun Luban to come back to Jianye again and help King Lu Sun Ba Lai compete with Liang'er for the crown prince position.

Gua is an ancient hieroglyphic character. The two sides of the character resemble melon vines, and the melon vine hangs down from the middle, producing a round and large fruit, which is a melon.

Although melon seeds have been around for a long time, watermelons are native to Africa and came to China across the ocean. It was a matter of the Western Han Dynasty.

China has opened sea lanes with the African continent since the Western Han Dynasty. Starting from the African continent, it passed through Sri Lanka and Nanyang Islands, and finally landed on the coast of Fujian.

During the Western Han Dynasty, watermelon came to China across the ocean along this route. At that time, only members of the royal family and nobles were eligible to enjoy watermelon. However, the name watermelon at that time was not called watermelon, but

Cold melon.

Watermelon was introduced to China. It is said that it was introduced through the Western Regions in about the third century BC, so it was called "watermelon".

The shape, color, nature and taste of watermelon were described by Liu Zhen, one of the "Seven Sons of Jian'an" in the Han Dynasty, in "Fu on Melon" as follows: blue skin with dense texture, plain muscle and red flesh, sweeter than honeycomb, cold and sub-frozen. Because watermelon belongs to the genus

It is cold in nature, so it was called "cold melon" in the Wei Dynasty.

Speaking of which, this melon poem has a lot to do with Cao Zhi. If Cao Zhi had not ordered Liu Zhen to make the poem in a hurry while eating melons, there would not have been such a poem.

At that time, watermelons were still relatively rare in China. "The Biography of Teng Tanggong in Southern History" records: Teng Tanggong of Nanchang "Mother Yang suffered from fever and wanted to eat cold melons, which were not produced by local customs."

Tan Gong cannot visit me, and I am very sad."

At that time, the patient wanted to eat watermelon, but his family was looking for it everywhere but could not find it, which made him feel "sad and sad".

Sun Quan took the cold melon with a wry smile and said, "I hope so. I also hope to bring Dahu back in a few years, just like I brought back my sister Shangxiang back then. But does Shu'er really want Dahu to come back?"

Pan Shu said inconsistently: "Your Majesty, don't worry too much. Although I didn't deal with Dahu very much before, after all, I and she are still a family, and I still hope that she can come back to Jianye."

Sun Quan then recited a poem about cold melons: "The flowing fragrance contains gold essence, so melons are planted in the crown to make them precious.

The three stars are in the corner, and the warm wind is at dusk.

The pillow is curled up on the vine, and the beauty spreads far away.

Huang Huabingye is the author of Qianshi.

Rich, thin and special-shaped, round and square.

Yanghui hair algae, Jiucai mixed kneading.

It was bitter at first, but finally it was sweet.

When ripe, it smells fragrant with orchids.

Blue-skinned honey, Sujidan essence.

He was appointed gardener, and Gongchun was the best.

Throw it into the clear streams, one floats and the other hides.

The ivory mats are more clothed, and the tortoise shell feasts are smoked.

Depending on the number of red jade, you can pick up the blue bottle.

Analyze it with a golden knife, cut it open in four parts and separate it in three parts. It is carried on the carved plate of Lu, and the power of the eyes is fine. It is sweeter than the honey chamber, and cold and arrogant."

There are many kinds of melons, and they are not produced in just one place, but Liaodong, Lujiang, and Dunhuang are the best.

"Book of Rites" once recorded: When peeling melons for the emperor, put them on a fine kudzu cloth; when peeling melons for the kings (princes), put them on a coarse kudzu cloth; when peeling melons for the officials, put nothing on them.

The melons lead to many vivid stories. For example, the melons come and go, and the story of the garrison of Kwai Kau.

There is the story of Song Jinggong's death in the melon garden; there is also the story of Song Jiu, a Liang doctor, who watered melon vines on the Chu border, which led to friendly relations between Chu and Liang; and the story of the First Emperor's secret order to plant melons.

Visit the place, then shoot it with a crossbow, fill the valley with soil, and trap and kill the Confucian scholars.

There is also a story about the Queen Mother of the West who ate the Kongtongling Melon and became an immortal after eating it.

There are also stories of nobles who grew melons to support themselves, or occasionally shared melons with Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty, but were promoted to official positions three times a year. It can be seen that melons are an indispensable fruit in people's lives, suitable for both high and low people.

Because melon has edible and ornamental value, many scribes sang about it in poems, rhymes and other styles, making it enter the palace of literature and shine.

As a result, more and more strange and beautiful and moving stories are attached, making people feel more intimate and never forget to sing their praises after eating.

Liu Zhen's "Gua Fu" is one of the representative chapters.

Its singing of melons reflects the luxurious life of the upper class aristocrats.

They got something for nothing, but what they got was the best-selected melons.

Liu Zhen wrote a short preface before this "Fu on Melon": "Zhen was sitting in Cao Zhi, and the cook came into the melon. Planting life as a poem, to promote success." After being ordered to write a fu, he wrote about melon. Looking at the prospect, his heart is full of imagination,

The image of the melon was created, depicting the typical environment for eating melon, reflecting the luxurious life of the nobles.

Sun Quan tasted the cold melon and continued: "This melon must have been soaked in the clear and sweet spring water in the mountains near Jianye to have such a taste.

It's a pity that I don't have any seats inlaid with ivory here today. The banquet tableware is carved with tortoise shell and has been scented. The table is paved with red jade, and there are jasper wine glasses filled with wine.

And there is no banquet, and we will eat melon after the banquet."

Sun Quan is right to think so. After all, it is only logical for this kind of family and under such environmental conditions to eat rare melons, and it also makes this melon seem extraordinary.

"Cao Pi wrote in "Books with Wu Zhi" "Sinking sweet melons in clear springs".

It can be seen that soaking the melon in clear spring water is the best way to get the best taste.

How unfair it is that workers cannot eat the best food and pay tribute to the rulers. Such small things in life also show class differences.

Naturally, Liu Zhen could not have realized this. Instead, he believed that paying tribute was a natural and logical thing, and there was no irony in it.

Pan Shu said softly: "This is a simple move by Your Majesty. You don't want to be extravagant and wasteful. If Your Majesty wants, you can be as luxurious as Cao Zhi eating melons."

Sun Quan replied: "However, this cold melon was cut into four pieces, divided into multiple petals, placed in a carved color plate, and covered with a cloth made of fine kudzu. However, it complies with ancient etiquette."

Pan Shu answered: "I heard from the female official in charge of storing cold melons in the palace that when the cold melons are ripe, the melon farmers will choose the best melons and pay tribute to the emperor, princes and ministers.

The melon farmers who tended the melons picked the melons and put them in the clean river water. The ripe melons floated on the water and flowed with the water. The bad melons sank into the water. The good ones were collected and prepared to be presented to the court.

It is a rare fruit. I have never tasted it before, but now I can eat this cold melon that is as sweet as honey and as cool as ice jade whenever I want. All this is because I met Your Majesty.

"

The ancients have a long history of keeping bees and eating honey, so compared with the honeycomb (honey in the hive), it is even better.

Sweets are indispensable nutrients for people. Physiological needs and psychological pleasure are integrated into one, so sweetness is regarded as beauty. Nowadays, people think that only by eating cool melon can you fully taste its best taste and bring out its best taste.

sweet characteristics.

Sun Quan looked at Pan Shu on the side and said with a smile: "I am lucky to meet Shu'er."
