Chapter 155 Supply crisis of high-end microscopes

These giants that suddenly announced their reduction plans are undoubtedly optical giants.

Obviously, they are targeting the domestic optical industry.

In the optical industry, this industry circle is neither too big nor too small.

Because the lenses involved are not just as simple as mobile phone lenses.

As mentioned in the previous chapter, the cryo-EM and systems, the development of high-end microscopes such as confocal microscopes are considered upstream industries in the optical industry and are also an industry of precision manufacturing.

Cryo-electron microscopy, the full name of cryo-transmission electron microscope, is a type of microscope. Microscopes are mostly used in the field of biomedical research and are essential instruments for biomedical research. They can be used to clearly see the internal structure of drugs, and medical and biological researchers can

Use cryo-electron microscopy to study genes, vaccines, etc. to facilitate breakthroughs in medicine and biotechnology.

With the development of freezing equipment, cryo-electron microscopy technology continues to make breakthroughs. Currently, this technology is mainly used in the field of biological macromolecules.

There are three main types: cryo-transmission electron microscope, cryo-scanning electron microscope and cryo-etching electron microscope.

But the cost is high, even an ordinary cryo-TEM costs around 6 million dollars.

This kind of cryo-EM can only be purchased by universities, hospitals or companies with strong foundation and financial resources.

Due to the lack of core transmission electron microscopy technology and enterprises in China, it will not be self-sufficient for a long time. The cryo-electron microscopy imported from abroad every year amounts to more than 600 billion yuan.

Cryo-electron microscopy Yingjiang and Xiaori also registered their own intellectual property rights. In addition, the investment is large and the technical difficulties are huge. They are only used in the field of medical biology and the market demand is not high. As a result, no company dares to take huge risks to invest in research and development.<

This is also the dilemma of domestic cryo-electron microscopy so far.

But it not only includes cryo-electron microscopy, but also includes professional optical high-end microscopes such as metallographic microscopes and confocal microscopes.

They are all indispensable instruments for experiments in corporate or university laboratories.

Like a confocal microscope, it can realize real-time dynamic detection of molecules in living cells, optically slice thick samples through a scanning device, and reconstruct the three-dimensional structure of the sample with the assistance of computer post-processing technology.

This type of microscope combines multiple observation methods or related accessories such as bright field, phase contrast, fluorescence and other functions to be realized on one microscope. It belongs to the category of system microscope and is different from traditional biological optical microscopes.

They are more powerful in performance and often produce more accurate results when doing certain biomedical experiments.

In addition, it seems that these optical giants are cutting back not only in the biomedical field, but also in relatively high-performance laser satellite lenses, which all play a major role in the field of aerospace observation.

But the simple fact is that most of the domestic aerospace-grade experimental spaceborne lenses are developed by major domestic universities, so the impact on this part is not great.

The industries most affected now are mobile phones, photography and the medical industry.

Needless to say, the field of mobile phones and photography is nothing more than reducing the shooting experience of electronic products or photography equipment, but for the medical industry, cryo-electron microscopy is an indispensable scientific instrument.

If it is reduced by then, it means that later parts replacement and maintenance will also be subject to certain restrictions. In addition, many domestic universities currently want to introduce foreign cryo-electron microscopy to promote the development of biological and medical technology.

But after these announcements are released, they may affect some of their subsequent plans.

"It seems that many related industries in China will be affected now."

Wang Dalong felt a little helpless.

Although Suiren Technology has not yet been involved in related products and will not be affected for the time being, who can guarantee that their own company, including any other industry, will be able to survive independently?

Even in unrelated industries, that little butterfly may trigger other linkage effects.

So no one should gloat about this.

But the most anxious ones at present are the universities or research institutes that want to introduce this equipment.

Among them is Lingnan University of Science and Technology in Pengcheng.

As one of the key double-first-class universities in China, Lingnan University of Science and Technology is equally strong in biology and medicine.

Therefore, Lingnan University of Science and Technology and the Pengcheng government jointly funded the construction of the world's third largest cryo-electron microscopy center.

The center will purchase six high-end cryo-electron microscopes to study viruses and life genes, playing an important role in the biological and medical fields. It will also provide frozen sample preparation, data analysis and other services to relevant companies and experimental teams.

But only three have arrived now, and the remaining batch will be affected by the recent announcement, which may delay the completion of the center and prevent large-scale experiments.

For this reason, the person in charge of the center is also very anxious, hoping to find other channels to introduce it.

Lingnan University of Science and Technology Cryo-EM Center

Professor Wu is staying in Director Liu's office to discuss solutions.

"Director Liu, what do you think we should do? We still need a batch of cryo-electron microscopes. If they don't arrive, our investment will be reimbursed!"

He looked anxious and walked back and forth.

"I said to me, Professor Wu, don't go around too much. It's useless no matter how anxious you are. I've already reported this matter to my superiors. Now let's see how they respond?"

Director Liu is also helpless. After all, he is the director in charge of this center, but now something like this happens, he is also very worried.

"How can I not be in a hurry? This cryo-electron microscope is very important to us. Without this equipment, we will not be able to carry out any subsequent research!"

Professor Wu replied with a somewhat excited expression.

Director Liu did not reply. He knew that Professor Wu was a pure scientific researcher, and some high-end instruments and equipment were a great help for his research. If these key equipment were missing, then there would basically be no need for a war in the subsequent research.

.

"By the way, Professor Wu, as long as foreign ones don't work, can we seek help from these foreign optical companies? Otherwise, it won't be a problem to wait for a reply from our superiors!"

Director Liu suddenly made a suggestion.

But Professor Wu shook his head, "This is not possible. None of these high-end cryo-electron microscopes have been independently developed by any of us in China."

He is relatively clear about this aspect in China. It is okay to develop mid- to low-end optical equipment in China, but the problem is that cryo-electron microscopy is a high-end optical instrument, and the various professional technologies in it are not that of mid-to-low-end optical equipment.

It can be made up.

"In this case, we can only wait for notification from our superiors."

Director Liu sighed.

Of course, it is not only the domestic family that is anxious, but also the Marine Life Cryo-EM Center in Donglu Province~

They also convened to wait for the arrival of the cryo-EM and sent consultation emails to these optical giants, but there was no response after the emails were sent.

But it makes those old teachers or experts very anxious.
