Chapter 222 Gold Fan

The second painting is not a scroll or a hand scroll, but a fan.

The shape of the fan is a folding fan known as "elegant sleeves".

The material is gold-plated paper.

The full name of this fan should be: "Folding Fan with Colored Landscapes and Figures on Illumination and Gold Paper".

The content of the painting is relatively simple, with distant mountains and waterfalls and quiet bamboo forests.

A gorgeous woman leads a boy with hanging sideburns and walks leisurely through the bamboo forest.

Several colorful butterflies flew by, and the chubby boy reached out to catch them with a smile, while the woman looked at the scene with a smile on her face, looking happy and happy.

The picture is still and dynamic, full of fun, and the details are perfectly grasped. Even the texture of the butterfly wings is clearly visible.

There is a poem by the author in the upper right corner of the folding fan:

"The spring is fine again today, so I am going downstairs with my son Cao Zhu.

"Spring has been getting stronger recently, and children are growing beside the rocks.

There is an author's signature: "Daosheng".

Added the seal "Daosheng", this is a square two-character Zhuwen seal.

There are nine collection seals: Zijing (gourd-shaped, vermilion), Xiang Zijing (zhu), Xiang's family collection (white), Molin secret play (zhu).

Qianlong's Appreciation (Zhu), Qianlong's Imperial Treasure (Zhu), Sanxitang's Appreciation Seal (Zhu), Yizisun (White), Shiqu Baoji (Zhu).

"It turned out to be Madam Guan's work." Shen Yu cheered up instantly, but after he looked at it carefully for a few minutes, his two eyebrows frowned unconsciously.

Guan Sheng seems to be a male name, but she is actually a talented woman.

She was a famous female calligrapher, great painter, and poetry creator in the Yuan Dynasty.

He has a great background and is a descendant of Guan Zhong, the Prime Minister of Qi.

She is also the wife of Zhao Mengfu, the first person in the Yuan Dynasty and one of the four masters of regular script, known as Mrs. Guan in the world.

Because Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty canonized Zhao Mengfu as the Duke of Wei, Duan Sheng was also called the Lady of Wei.

Duan Sheng and Mrs. Wei (Wei Shuo), the teacher of the calligraphy sage Wang Xizhi, are known as the "two ladies in the calligraphy circle"

She has a clear brushwork and is good at painting bamboos, plums and orchids, as well as landscapes and Buddhist statues.

His calligraphy style is similar to that of Zhao Mengfu, and his writing skills are exactly the same as those of his husband.

According to legend, someone combined the calligraphy works of Zhao Mengfu, Guan Sheng and his son Zhao Yong, who is also a famous painter, into a scroll. After reading it, someone said that Mrs. Guan's calligraphy was the best.

Mrs. Guan once painted "Bamboo and Stone Pictures" on the wall of Zhanfo Temple in Huzhou. It is about ten feet high and five or six feet wide. It is a huge mural.

Mr. Qin sat on the chair, and Pei Yuqin stood behind her and gently beat her back.

Mr. Qin, who was already drowsy, suddenly said: "It is said that Mrs. Guan has an unparalleled elegance in life, and is both talented and beautiful, so she has very high standards for choosing a mate, and she has always been in the boudoir.

"It wasn't until I met Zhao Mengfu when I was almost thirty. You must know that when the ancients were thirty, many people's children were about to get married.

"Zhao Mengfu is as graceful as a young master named Yujia. There are classics that describe his appearance, saying that he has a graceful appearance, and he shines brightly in the palace.

"The two became husband and wife, a match made in heaven and on earth.

"The same is true for you two. You are not only a man and a woman, but you are both talented and beautiful. Isn't it also a match made in heaven?"

Pei Yuqin lowered his head slightly and said nothing.

Shen Yu smiled awkwardly and said nothing.

Zhao Mengfu and Mrs. Guan are a match made in heaven, but their relationship also has its ups and downs.

People born in Guan Sheng are naturally smart and sensitive, with a cheerful temperament.

The middle-aged Zhao Mengfu wanted to take a concubine, so Duan Sheng wrote a poem to his husband called: 'Ji Zi Ang Jun Mo Zhu'

"Husband, the bamboo was first planted when I passed away, and the bamboo has become Lin Jun's future.

"It's hard to make jade look better once it fades. It's better to have flowers fall and bloom again."

This is a slap in Zhao Mengfu’s face. It means that because my appearance is aging, you will take a concubine? Have you forgotten the oath we made to each other?

Then he continued to write a song "Wo Nong Ci": "You Nong and I Nong are so affectionate.

There are many feelings, as hot as fire.

Take a piece of clay and twist it to make you and shape me.

Break the two of us together and mix them with water; twist another you and mold another me.

I have you in the mud, and you have me in the mud. You and I were born in the same quilt, and we died in the same coffin."

When Zhao Mengfu saw her poem, he couldn't help but be deeply moved by Duan Sheng's deep friendship.

From then on, the matter of concubinage was never mentioned again.

"Xiao Shen, do you think this fan is the original work of Mrs. Guan?" Mr. Qin went straight to the point and asked if the painting was authentic.

Shen Yu also shook his head slightly happily, "This fan is just like the previous one by Li Tang. Although the painting is good, it's a pity that it is also a fake."

"Fake? Where's the basis for identification?" There was no expression on Mrs. Qin's face, and it was impossible to tell what she was thinking in her heart.

"Illuminated gold paper is also called mud gold paper and cold gold paper. Many people are not familiar with this kind of paper, but Mr. Qin, you should know about it."

Mr. Qin nodded, "Gold paper was an extremely precious paper for calligraphy and painting in ancient times."

Shen Yu continued: "Gold paper, to put it bluntly, is rice paper decorated with gold powder. The gold characters on the gold list are related to this kind of paper.

"According to ancient records, in the Tang Dynasty, scholars who passed the imperial examination and passed the imperial examination had to report the joy of admission.

"That is, the imperial examination notice. This post is to write the name, place of origin, and specific information of the successful candidate in a post and send it to the person's home. It is also called a post.

"Then what kind of paper is this post written on? It's this gold paper.

"There is an ancient poem that praises: Take a quick look at the top of the light ink list, and no need to block the gold and gold posts.

"The steps for making gold-gold paper are roughly as follows. First, select good rice paper, then apply a special glue on it, and then sprinkle with gold powder crushed by gold foil. Finally, the one with no visible original paper color is the best.

"After that, a special process is used to flatten the gold powder and cover it with alum water, so that a piece of gold-mud paper is completed.

"This kind of paper is cumbersome to process and is cooked paper. Compared with straw paper, rice paper, and silk, it doesn't absorb ink well. It's OK for calligraphy, but difficult for painting.

"Moreover, because it is difficult to make and the cost is extremely high, it is only used by the royal family and dignitaries.

"It wasn't until the Ming Dynasty that the cost of manufacturing gold paper came down. Real gold foil was no longer used, but substitutes were available. Because of improvements in the production process, mass production and application began.

"Mrs. Guan was from the Yuan Dynasty and had a high status, but there are doubts about the fact that she used gold-gold paper for painting, because as I said before, calligraphy on gold-gold paper is fine, but painting is not a good choice.

"Moreover, during the Song and Yuan dynasties, most of the fan paintings were round fans. After the Ming Dynasty, folding fans took over."

Mr. Qin nodded, expressing his approval of Shen Yu's appraisal conclusion, "Xiao Shen, you just said it was a fake. Now you just say that this is doubtful. Is there better evidence to prove that this fan is not the original work of Mrs. Guan?"

Shen Yu spoke hundreds of words in one breath. He was also very thirsty. He picked up the tea cup and took a sip of water and said, "As Mr. Qin said, doubts cannot be used as an absolute basis for identification.

"Second point, this folding fan has a square head and wide ribs. I counted fourteen levels of ribs.

"Fourteen-stage folding fans only became popular in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The folding fans in the Yuan Dynasty were not like this. This is the second doubt. If I were to appraise antiques, I might not buy them at this stage."

"Third point, because the folding fan needs to be opened and folded frequently, there will be some wear and tear around the fan ribs. No matter how well it is preserved, it is useless, just like people will age naturally.

"But this folding fan has no damage at all around the fan ribs, so it's very worthy of scrutiny.

"The fourth point is that the bone of this fan is made of wood. It's hard to say what kind of wood it is because I haven't seen it with my own eyes.

"The wood will expand and contract with the changes of the seasons. Even if it is stored in a fan cover or bag, it will be useless. Therefore, there will be small cracks in the paper around the fan ribs of the handed down fans.

"Sister Qin didn't see it when she zoomed in just now, so I concluded that this folding fan was just made not long ago.

"Finally, there are still some differences between the painter of this painting and Mrs. Guan, because it is a visual appraisal, and each person has his own opinion. Mr. Qin, you are appraising everyone, so you should understand what this junior means."

After Shen Yu finished speaking, he winked at Pei Yuqin, as if asking, "Sister Qin, did I not embarrass you?"

Pei Yuqin looked at Shen Yu with a smile on his face. He was excited, happy, and proud. He was even happier than if he had won a lottery worth tens of millions.
