678 Admiral Montgomery

The dark clouds seem unwilling to disperse from the city of Cairo.

The whole city is like a dull cage. Under the sky, in the calm, depression spreads silently.

The breath of life is so weak that people cannot believe that this was once a prosperous city. No one can connect the ruins in front of them with the rows of high-rise buildings in the past. The ruins in front of them quietly tell the story of a war.

of baptism.

It was not as if nothing happened here while Montgomery was stationed in Cairo.

In the week when Wavell launched Operation Tomahawk, the Italian Navy conducted two actual combat trainings using the captured aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.

And the goal of their actual combat training is to bomb Cairo, the capital of Egypt, where the air defense intensity is no longer as strong as it used to be!

Rubbles are piled on both sides of the road with mottled shell marks, and there is just enough space in the middle for vehicles to pass. It is obvious that the road has been simply cleared. Silence fills every corner of the air, and time flows so slowly here, but everyone can

Feel the hidden urgency in the air.

The low roar spread so clearly in the air, getting closer and louder, giving people an overwhelming momentum when they got close.

In the distance, the leading black Pentium car appeared slowly like the king of lions with a domineering and domineering attitude, followed by more and more cars. The peaceful street was suddenly broken by these uninvited guests.

In the car, a man wearing a well-tailored colonel-level military uniform took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took out a high-end cigar and held it in his mouth. Seeing this, another man sitting next to him immediately lit the fire respectfully.

"How long will it take before we can drive to the National Defense Hall?" the man asked calmly.

Next to him, the major general who was choked by the second-hand smoke breathed out by the man but did not dare to frown, squeezed out a smile and said: "We're almost there, we're almost there."

"Whoa!" There was a burst of braking, and just a few minutes after the major general said the words, the leading car stopped.

Immediately afterwards, the entire convoy followed and stopped on both sides.

The major general who finally stopped breathing second-hand smoke quickly opened the car door, ran to the other side quickly, and opened the door for the colonel who had just smoked him.

"Colonel, here we are. This is the Cairo National Defense Hall." The major general bowed his head respectfully and said.

"Yes." The man in the car nodded and stepped out of the car: "Let's go and announce Prime Minister Gott's order."

...

Interior of Cairo Defense Hall.

Wavell continued to threaten Montgomery: "Lieutenant General Montgomery, if you refuse to admit your dereliction of duty, then I will have to remove you from your post and take back the command of the Australian and Egyptian troops from you!"

"What did you say?!" After hearing this, Montgomery was so angry that he almost wanted to laugh.

Wavell lost the battle and lost many troops. With great difficulty, Montgomery reorganized the Egyptian troops in the rear, initially equipped them with Italian weapons, and expanded their size. In the end, everything had to be left to Wavell.

What is this? I, Montgomery, have worked so hard for you? Training so many troops, working hard to strengthen the combat effectiveness of the troops, but in the end I have to give it all to you, Wavell, to squander.

Even if you ask people to work part-time, you still have to ask people to take the blame for you.

Montgomery would have a better outcome no matter who took the blame. Even if he took the blame, he would not be severely punished. However, it was obviously not his fault, and he had repeatedly warned Wavell before.

How can it be considered his fault if the words still ring in his ears?

Even if it is a small mistake, Montgomery will not take it for others. In his opinion, whoever is at fault is the one who is at fault. Why should he bear the infamy and responsibility for a mistake he did not make? "I said, I want to take it back from you.

Command, take over your troops. In addition, I will report to London in the name of the Supreme Commander of the Commonwealth Allied Forces in Africa, and report your culpability to the local authorities."

"Report to London?" Montgomery laughed angrily, and said to Wavell with obvious ridicule: "I'm afraid you are still living in a dream!"

Wavell, who had just finished the defeat and had to regroup in a hurry, certainly did not know the situation on the home front better than Montgomery in the rear.

"To tell you the truth, London has fallen, and the current capital has been moved to Belfast on the island of Ireland." Montgomery looked at Wavell like a fool: "General Wavell, you said you wanted to report to London.

, is it to report to the Germans who occupied the place?"

"Lieutenant General Montgomery!" Wavell was so angry that his ignorant weakness was poked. He could only yell loudly to cover up his inner guilt. When he called Montgomery, he emphasized the English word "lieutenant general" very hard, and the implication was clear and unmistakable.

He wanted to use his own level to suppress Montgomery again.

"I want to remind you that I am still your commander, and I will not allow you to be so unreasonable!" Wavell pointed at Montgomery's nose and cursed without grace.

Who knows that Montgomery didn't accept this trick at all. He folded his arms rather disdainfully and looked at Wavell with a sneer: "You have always emphasized that your military rank is one level higher than mine. Don't you know that you are not higher in military rank than me?

What should I say? Or do you know that you are unreasonable and can only use your military rank to suppress me?"

"Shut up!" Wavell, who was once again hit on his weakness, roared furiously: "At least I am still your commander now, you have to listen to me."

"Oh?" Montgomery just snorted coldly, and then stopped answering.

"I finally have nothing to say." Wavell breathed a sigh of relief in his heart. The first level of officialdom is overwhelming, and he has put this theory to use today.

Just when Wavell was about to take advantage of his military rank to pursue and rebuke Montgomery, the door of the conference hall was suddenly pushed open from the outside.

Immediately afterwards, everyone in the conference hall saw a British colonel unknown to everyone, accompanied by a major general wearing an Egyptian military uniform, striding into the conference hall. Behind him, there were about a dozen people with loaded guns and ammunition.

Egyptian soldiers holding Italian weapons.

Obviously, this should be the Egyptian troops commanded by Montgomery.

As soon as he saw these Egyptian soldiers breaking in with guns, Wavell subconsciously turned his head and glared at Montgomery: "Lieutenant General Montgomery, what on earth do you want to do?! Do you want to mutiny!"

"Don't look at me. This colonel was sent by the local government. I just assigned a company to him as a direct guard company." Montgomery glanced at Wavell coldly: "This was not arranged by me.

,However, I think this should be beneficial to me."

He knew the colonel, who was the liaison officer sent by Gott and was responsible for conveying the latest instructions from the government as soon as possible.

After seeing Montgomery, the colonel smiled politely at Montgomery, then turned his head to face the people in the conference hall with a stern expression, and solemnly announced: "The local high command notifies all North African ministries,

Now the new government has moved its capital to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, and Duke Gott, the minister of military affairs, is also the new prime minister. At the same time, Prime Minister Gott's first order after taking office is to promote Montgomery, who preserves the British military power in North Africa, to the top.

Will."

"As for the second order..." the colonel sneered and looked at Wavell, who had just yelled at Montgomery: "Forcibly remove General Wavell from all positions and let General Montgomery take over on his behalf!"
