Chapter 1348 Prepare for the future

Things have changed. In the past, the Chinese army was suppressed by them with artillery fire, making the sky unresponsive and the earth ineffective, and was eventually wiped out.

Today is finally their turn to experience this for themselves, which can be regarded as retribution.

The shelling went away as quickly as it came.

In the blink of an eye, it stopped, and the attacking hundreds of Eighth Route Army troops also approached less than fifty meters in front of the formation.

The team leader watched the whole process and was anxious in his heart, but there was nothing he could do about it.

As long as they attack more than twenty meters forward, the soldiers at the front can throw grenades into the position, causing a devastating blow to the men in the trenches.

"Counterattack! All the troops who can still move on the position should counterattack. The attacking troops must be driven back." The commander of the company ordered hurriedly.

"The troops on the second line of defense also joined the battle to provide fire cover for the troops on the first line of defense."

"All artillery fire, ignore the Eighth Route Army's artillery counterattack, concentrate all artillery to attack their attacking troops."

"The Eighth Route Army does not have many troops to attack us. As long as we cause a lot of damage to them, they will lose their offensive capabilities."

The commander of the regiment made very careful arrangements, putting all available troops and firepower into the battle and repelling the first round of the garrison's attack at all costs.

But the reality is cruel.

Just like they used to attack the Chinese army with artillery fire.

In the face of absolute firepower superiority, no matter how good the strategy and tactics are, they are all in vain and meaningless. At most, they will only allow themselves to struggle for a while longer.

The second line of defense was also the position closest to the top of the mountain. As soon as the light and heavy machine guns mounted on it started firing, shells rained down overwhelmingly.

There are trenches as bunkers. If they squat in the trenches, the damage caused by the rain of shells to them will be very limited.

But in order to provide fire cover for the first line of defense, most soldiers stretched half of their bodies out of the trenches, at least half of their heads.

Mortar fragments flying close to the ground don't have eyes.

Regardless of whether it's the body or the head, as long as it's in front of you, they will put it on them.

Either the head is bleeding, half of the head is cut off, or a bloody hole is made in the body...

Only a few rounds of artillery shells rained down, and the second line of defense was submerged in artillery fire.

"Captain, we can no longer let the troops on the second line of defense shoot." the chief of staff reminded heartbrokenly.

"They are more than 100 meters away from the Eighth Route Army's attacking troops. The Eighth Route Army's artillery can fire boldly without worrying about accidental damage."

"If we continue to fight like this, the troops on the second line of defense will be destroyed before the Eighth Route Army attacks."

The commander of the regiment was very aggrieved and ordered: "All troops on the second line of defense are hidden!"

"No, leave one-third of the troops to stay in the hidden position, and the remaining two-thirds of the troops will push back thirty meters and dig a trench."

The chief of staff was puzzled and reminded: "Go back thirty meters and you will reach the top of the mountain."

"We have to dig even to the top of the mountain!" the commander ordered without hesitation.

"Without the second line of defense to provide fire cover, the first line of defense will definitely not be able to hold on for too long. With just the trench we are in, it is impossible to hold on until reinforcements arrive."

"Dig another trench on the top of the mountain for defense. As our retreat, it can buy us at least two hours."

The chief of staff suddenly reacted and quickly agreed: "The commander of the unit is wise, and I will make arrangements now for my humble position."

"Shoot, shoot at the Eighth Route Army in front!" On the first line of defense, the Japanese second lieutenant held his command knife high and squatted next to a heavy machine gun, waving it and shouting.

"Da da da……"

The machine gunner immediately took the order to fire, and the two Eighth Route Army soldiers who were caught in the crosshair fell to the ground.

"The Eighth Route Army is coming from the left, kill them!" the second lieutenant continued shouting, holding up his command knife.

The machine gunner immediately turned his gun and put the three Eighth Route Army soldiers who were close at hand into the crosshairs.

After finishing, he was about to fire when a string of heavy machine gun bullets came towards him.

Several bullets hit the machine gun, causing sparks to fly and making a pleasant metallic collision sound.

More bullets flew past the machine gun and penetrated the machine gunner's body.

A machine gun position was filled with casualties in an instant, and the second lieutenant squatting next to him was not spared either. He was shot in the chest, his eyes were round, and his face was full of resignation.

The same battle takes place in every corner of the battlefield.

On the battlefield, whether they were Japanese soldiers or puppet soldiers, if they fired a bullet and killed an Eighth Route Army soldier, they would immediately attract ten or even twenty times the number of bullets from the Eighth Route Army.

No matter how powerful the Japs are in combat, they cannot withstand the overwhelming bullets flying towards them.

Within five minutes of the exchange of fire between the two sides, the Japanese were defeated. All the survivors were huddled in the trench half a man deep. It was difficult to find a chance to raise their heads to fight back. They could only watch the Eighth Route Army continue to approach them.

As for the puppet troops, they have been cowardly from the beginning.

If a few Japs hadn't ruthlessly chopped off the heads of two people and forced them to fight back, they might not even have the guts to raise their guns and shoot.

Even so, they huddled in the trenches and fired blindly. As for where the bullets went, only God knows.

There were several sections of trenches that were not connected to each other, and it was even worse. There were not many Japanese and puppet troops in them. After the offensive firepower killed some of them, there were even fewer Japanese and puppet troops left.

There was nothing we could do against the oncoming Eighth Route Army.

"Throw a grenade..."

The orders of the Eighth Route Army commander sounded outside the trench.

The Japs didn't quite understand what they heard, but they could guess a little bit.

The puppet soldiers heard this clearly, and their faces turned pale.

He didn't care about anything, he kept his body as close to the bottom of the trench as possible, held his head in his hands, and prayed that no grenade would hit him.

As soon as they finished these actions, more than a dozen blinding grenades flew towards them.

"Rumble..."

The explosion sounded right next to them, deafening, and then they heard several screams in the trenches, from the Japanese and the puppet soldiers.

"Boom boom boom..."

The explosion had no intention of stopping once it started. While a large amount of smoke and dust was rolled up in the position, many Japanese puppet troops were killed and injured.

The attacking troops thirty meters away took the opportunity to launch an assault and approached the trench as quickly as possible.

"I surrender..." As soon as the explosion stopped, a voice sounded in the trench.

The soldier who was about to continue throwing grenades stopped decisively.

When I rushed into the smoke-filled position, I saw a dozen living puppet soldiers kneeling in the trench with their heads in their hands, and all their weapons and ammunition were thrown outside the trench.

Some of the few Japs were killed by grenades, and some were killed by them, otherwise their surrender would not have been so smooth.

The commander of the unit witnessed the entire battle with his own eyes. Unexpectedly, the first line of defense was broken through without even resisting a single attack by the Eighth Route Army. His face was full of despair.
