Chapter 256 Surprise victory

"Boom boom boom..."

Three explosions sounded at the station at the same time.

The explosive power of the 81mm caliber mortar is no worse than that of ordinary mountain cannons, but it does not have as strong penetrating power.

A blazing bonfire happened to be commanded by the artillery shells. When the explosion ended, the location of the bonfire had turned into a crater. Burning wood and shell fragments were flying around like goddesses scattering flowers, killing the Japanese and puppet soldiers who were squatting and resting next to them.

Knock down.

Screams soon sounded around.

They were caught off guard and were attacked, and the artillery shells specifically hit the place where there were several bonfires and the largest number of Japanese and puppet troops.

The result of the battle was very great. At least ten Japanese and puppet soldiers were killed and fell to the ground in a bloody state.

There were seven or eight wounded people lying there, squirming, and letting out bursts of heart-rending screams.

"Boom boom boom..."

Three explosions went off again, and the impact point was nearby.

The Japanese and puppet soldiers who had just regarded the three explosions as accidents finally understood this time, and subconsciously lay on the ground and shouted: "The enemy is attacking, the enemy has artillery, get down and take cover!"

The well-trained Japanese soldiers lay on the ground with their heads in their hands. The puppet troops were everywhere, and the entire camp was suddenly in chaos.

Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe was awakened from his sleep when the first round of explosions sounded.

After a while, he got up from the cot, put on his military uniform and rushed outside, screaming as he rushed.

"Bageya Road, what happened outside? Where did the explosion come from?"

As soon as he opened the tent curtain, the deputy rushed over with a gust of cold wind: "Enemy attack..."

"Sir, we were attacked by the enemy, and the enemy was equipped with three mortars!"

"Then why are you still stunned? Order the mortar squadron to counterattack immediately. We have twelve mortars, aren't we a match for their three mortars! Counterattack now!" Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe shouted happily instead of angry.

He had a feeling that those who were shelling the garrison must be the Eighth Route Army who ambushed his forward troops in the afternoon. As expected, they did not miss the opportunity to attack the garrison at night tonight.

The only thing that Watanabe didn't expect was that their night attack would start with artillery, which was so unexpected.

He hesitated and continued to order: "This must be a conspiracy of the Eighth Route Army to attack us at night!"

"Order the security forces to strengthen their vigilance. I suspect they will send out infantry to attack us while our station is under shelling and in chaos."

"Now I am even more sure that the Eighth Route Army operating around us is more difficult to deal with than I thought. They used artillery to attack us at night and did not follow common sense at all, making us unable to defend ourselves!"

"Boom boom boom..."

The mortar squadron not far away quickly began to counterattack, leaving Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe for less than two minutes.

"Sir, the Eighth Route Army's artillery fire has stopped..." the adjutant reported with a frown.

"The security troops and secret sentries did not notice anyone approaching our station. Could it be that the shelling just now was just a bluff by the Eighth Route Army, and they simply wanted to sneak attack us with mortars and kill our troops!"

"It's possible!" Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe replied with a frown. Faced with the Eighth Route Army, which didn't play its cards according to common sense, he was a little confused.

He frowned and continued to order: "The security forces need to be more alert, and the artillery is on standby~"

"If the Eighth Route Army really just wants to use artillery to sneak attack us, as long as we kill their artillery, the threat will be lifted!"

"Boom boom boom..."

After waiting for ten minutes without any movement outside the station, Watanabe was just about to return to his tent when the explosion went off again, and it was nearby.

"Baga, we are being targeted by the Eighth Route Army artillery. Protect the brigade captain and move immediately!" the adjutant's expression changed and he shouted.

Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe broke free and came to protect his subordinates: "Why panic? The impact point is still far away from here!"

"Order the artillery to counterattack immediately, and the security forces will continue to strengthen their alert!"

Just like before, the three mortars fired only three rounds before stopping, and no trace of the Eighth Route Army's sneak attack troops was found near the station!

"Do these Eighth Route Army troops really plan to use mortars to sneak attack us? Do they have so many artillery shells?" Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe frowned and looked puzzled.

Then he ordered with a serious face: "Tell the mortar squadron that if the Eighth Route Artillery has another bombardment, be sure to kill them. You must wait for my order before firing!"

This time, they waited for almost half an hour before the shelling began.

After the previous two experiences, Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe did not panic this time. He rushed out of the tent and raised his binoculars to search for the Eighth Route Army mortar positions in the vast darkness around the station, waiting for the mortar squadron to counterattack.

"Everything..."

The mortar squadron took only one minute to launch a counterattack this time, but Lieutenant Commander Watanabe was not happy at all.

As soon as the shelling stopped, the captain of the mortar squadron rushed over panting and reported with a guilty conscience: "Sir, the Eighth Route Army artillery is too cunning!"

"They fired three rounds of artillery shells and then retreated. It only took half a minute. But we needed at least a minute to lock the opponent's position and set up new shooting elements before firing. By then, the Eighth Route Artillery had already retreated!"

"This humble position has not completed the task. Please punish me, sir!"

Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe asked with a stern face: "Is there any other way?"

"There is a way!" The squadron leader hesitated and replied: "Send artillery observers to find their artillery units, and report their positions to us when they set up new artillery positions. The artillery squadron can then fire before they finish firing the artillery shells and transfer them.

Through the numerical advantage of artillery, a burst of artillery fire will kill them!"

The deputy captain next to him hesitated and suggested: "Sir, do you think it doesn't need to be so troublesome?"

"Send an infantry group directly to attack, find them, and kill them!"

Watanabe frowned and asked: "What if the Eighth Route Army sets up an ambush position around their artillery? Not only will our attack troops not be able to destroy their artillery, but we will also fall into a trap and be killed by them!"

"Is the Eighth Route Army as powerful as here?" the deputy captain asked with disbelief.

Watanabe shook his head and reminded: "Don't underestimate the enemy!"

"I have studied the Eighth Route Army. The reason why the Imperial Army was defeated by them time and time again was because they underestimated the enemy many times and they seized on the loopholes. Then they launched fatal attacks on the Imperial Army and finally defeated the Imperial Army!"

"They are different from other Chinese armies. They only fight hard. They are better at using strategies and winning by surprise. We must be cautious about this!"

The deputy captain still didn't believe in Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe's judgment, but the rank of a senior official was overwhelming. Faced with Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe's caution, as a subordinate, no matter how dissatisfied he was, he could only execute the order.

Then he replied: "Immediately send out artillery observers, let them find the Eighth Route Artillery active around us, and then send a signal to the artillery to guide the artillery position!"

Lieutenant Colonel Watanabe shook his head cautiously and replied: "You can't send signals!"

"Whether it is a signal flare or a signal gun, it is too obvious. We can see it from all directions, and it will also expose the observer and be attacked by eight directions!"

"Let them bring the radio directly there and confirm the specific location of the Eighth Route Artillery through the radio!"
