Chapter 10 Tanks

"Would you like a sip?" Okunev secretly handed Shulka a bottle of Votka, which Okunev snatched from the officers' mess... before it was blown up.

"No!" Shulka shook his head, he needed to keep a clear head.

"Don't care what they say!" Okunev said: "They are using this method to declare their courage, but a true brave man does not need to and will not do this at the same time!"

"I know!" Shulka replied, and at the same time looked at Okunev in surprise. He couldn't believe that Okunev would say such philosophical words.

However, he was handsome for only three seconds, and Okunev revealed his secret in the next sentence: "What I said was not bad, it was a line from "Liberation"!"

"Oh, yes, it is indeed very good!" Shulka replied.

Okunev is nicknamed "The Actor", which is also his dream.

By this time the Germans had lost patience.

"This is your last chance!" A shout came from the loudspeaker: "There are still ten seconds left, give up resistance, otherwise we will launch a final attack on you!"

There was silence for a while, but no movement was seen, and then the countdown came: "Ten, nine,... three, two, one!"

As soon as "one" was counted, the whistling sound of artillery shells rang in the air.

Shulka instinctively bent down to protect his lunch box... Soon he knew that this approach was wrong. He should not protect the lunch box, but should stuff all the food into his mouth as quickly as possible.

Later, he realized that the more mature approach would be to throw away the lunch box, grab the rifle and hide.

"Boom boom" With the explosion of artillery shells, mud and dust swept from the air like a sandstorm, and then the German bombers also joined the bombing... The Germans installed equipment on the nose of the "Stuka" bomber

There is an air-driven sound device, nicknamed the "Horn of Jericho", which allows it to emit a shrill scream similar to an air raid siren when it dives.

Although this generator would actually affect the Stuka's flight quality and speed, the Germans still insisted on doing it.

Their goal was obviously achieved, because the Soviet soldiers below, including Shulka, couldn't help but feel weak when they heard the roar.

In addition to the bombs dropped, the Germans also installed whistles on the bombs, so that they would make another long, thin whistling sound when they fell from the sky.

The sound always comes from far to near, and then there is a loud "boom"...

This was a nightmare for the Soviet soldiers on the ground who were enduring all this, because they always had the illusion that bombs were falling above their heads and towards their location.

This made many Soviet soldiers unable to help but jump up from their hiding places and run away... They were not all escaping. In fact, most of them were shifting positions without a target to avoid being hit by bombs.

Shulka also had this urge, but he used all his willpower to stay where he was.

Because Shulka knows one thing clearly: the probability of a shell or bomb hitting a person directly is very small. What is more lethal is the scattered shrapnel and the upward shock wave.

Therefore, regardless of the violent storm and turbulent waves outside, Shurka only knew how to lower his body and stay where he was.

Of course this was the right thing to do, because in the smoke and flying dust, Shulka could often see running Soviet soldiers being violently lifted into the air.

I don't know how long it took for the gunfire to stop. Shurka took out the lunch box he was protecting and took a look... The mashed potatoes were still mashed potatoes, but there was more soil and mud, and no beans could be seen.

When I looked up again, I couldn't help but be scared to death. Less than one meter away from me, there was a big gasoline barrel lying across the trench... This was obviously dropped by a German bomber, but luckily it didn't.

It would be blown up, otherwise nothing would happen to Shulka.

Okunev also crawled out of the mud at this time. After seeing the gasoline barrel, the two of them grabbed their guns and ran along the side of the trench for dozens of meters in one breath. Thinking about it, they felt that it was not enough.

They ran away for another ten meters... The gasoline barrels could be detonated at any time on the battlefield, and they didn't want to be burned to ashes.

"The enemy is coming!" someone shouted.

There is nothing surprising about this. The Germans have attacked several times. What is strange is that there is a "rumbling" sound of an engine in the smoke.

At first Shurka thought it was the ringing in the ears after the bombing, or the sound of German cars and armored vehicles.

Until someone shouted in horror: "Tank, German tank!"

Shurka looked away from the crosshair and looked up, and sure enough, he saw several behemoths slowly driving out of the smoke. The barrels were slightly upward, and the dark muzzles were facing forward. The black "Wan" character on the side of the turret made

It adds a bit of power.

6 road wheels, "Plank 3" tanks, three in total.

Shulka believes that the reason why the Germans have not used tanks against Brest Fortress until now and only have three tanks is because their main armored forces have bypassed Brest Fortress and gone straight to their first target city:

Minsk.

The leader of this armored force was Guderian, who is widely known in modern times as the "Father of Armored Forces."

Shulka felt lucky for this... Guderian's armored forces bypassed Brest instead of crushing it, otherwise Shulka would probably have been just a piece of meat on its tank tracks.

But there seems to be no difference now, because the Soviet army in Brest Fortress seriously lacks anti-tank equipment.

As mentioned before, the ammunition depot of the fortress was massively blown up by the Germans at the first opportunity, and the few artillery units also suffered casualties in the subsequent artillery battles and bombings. As a result, the Soviet army only had some light weapons...

…They don’t even have anti-tank guns and anti-tank grenades.

These light weapons may still be effective against the charge of German infantry, but they are obviously unable to deal with the 37mm thick armored "Plank III" tanks. This can also be seen from the dead silence in the Soviet trenches.

At some point, Major Gavrilov was already in the trench. He looked at the tanks with his binoculars and immediately ordered: "Organize a demolition team!"

Everyone knows what a demolition team means, that is, they use explosive packets or cluster grenades to blow up tanks at close range.

This method may indeed be feasible, but it is conceivable that the Germans, who are well-trained and especially experienced in infantry-tank cooperation, will not let Soviet soldiers approach their tanks easily.

As a result, the situation on the battlefield suddenly became very serious... The Germans did not lie, this seemed indeed to be the "final attack."
