Chapter 454 Control the Congress!

Once the slave owners' ambitions are truly realized and slavery is extended to the entire United States, not only will the booming industry and economic development in the northern United States be destroyed by slavery, but every civilian in the United States may be

Those who are unable to repay their debts may even be directly abducted and turned into slaves!

Under American slavery, there were not only black slaves, but also a considerable number of white slaves in the plantations of southern slave owners!

Some of them were unable to repay their debts and were forced to work as slaves to their creditors; some were poor immigrants who wanted to go to North America but lacked travel expenses.

Immigrants who lacked the ability to defend themselves, such as frail beggars and children, were often forced or tricked into becoming slaves.

Criminals who committed serious crimes in Britain, and even poor people who committed minor crimes but were exiled to the Americas, were also a major source of white slaves in the United States.

Although this kind of propaganda by the Republican Party is somewhat alarmist and has little effect in attracting votes for the president, it has put many American civilians who pursue a better life on guard. If slavery was limited to the southern states, they would not be worried and would not commit the crime.

Some slaves ruin their peaceful lives.

But if these evil slave owners really have the intention to expand slavery to the north, they will resolutely resist and will never allow this to happen!

Not to mention that the existence of slavery will greatly reduce their job opportunities and compete for their living space. Even themselves and their children may become slaves at any time for various reasons.

You know, in the southern slave states, the number of slaves accounted for one-third of the total population. Who can guarantee that if slavery really spreads, they will remain free forever?

The Republican Party's campaign is not so much about running for president as it is about promoting the threat of slavery and arousing people's vigilance against slavery. This behavior may seem meaningless, but as time goes by, it will be criticized by others.

I haven't forgotten it gradually.

But in fact, this is a firewood that the Republican Party filled in the hearts of the people. It seems to have no effect now, but as long as someone adds another firewood, the flames of anti-slavery will surely burn brightly!

And this fire was quickly lit!

The presidential election of 1856 ended with the victory of the Democratic Party. James Buchanan of the Democratic Party was successfully elected as the seventeenth president and officially took office in March 1857.

James Buchanan chose to compromise on the issue of slavery. The power of southern slave owners increased again and their arrogance became more arrogant. Their eyes were no longer limited to the undeveloped West, but they attempted to further extend slavery to the entire

U.S!

In 1857, southern slave owners attempted to use the "Scott Decision" to extend slavery to the entire territory of the United States.

Scott was originally a slave of J. Emerson, a military doctor in Missouri.

In 1834, he moved with his master to the Free State of Illinois, and later moved to Wisconsin, where slavery was prohibited according to the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and thus became free.

But after returning to the slave state of Missouri in 1838, he became a slave again.

In 1846, Scott filed a petition in Missouri, requesting restoration of freedom on the basis that he was a twice-free resident of free soil. He won the first instance, but was later rejected by the Missouri court.

Scott appealed to the Supreme Court.

Under the control of the southern slave owners, on March 6, 1857, the Federal Supreme Court ruled:

"Scott was a black slave.

Slaves were the property of their owners and were not U.S. citizens. They had no right to appeal to the federal courts. This property right could not be revoked except through due legal procedures, and Scott had not gone through such procedures before.

Since the property of citizens is protected by the Constitution, neither Congress nor local councils have the authority to declare slavery to be outlawed anywhere in the United States."

As early as 1820, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise, which stipulated that the dividing line between slave states and free states should be divided into 36 degrees 30 degrees north latitude. Slavery was allowed in the territory south of this line, and prohibited in the territory north of the line.

Slavery.

This ruling actually declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and made slavery legal in all U.S. territories.

The southern slave-owning forces originally wanted to rely on this judgment to encroach on the northern region bit by bit, and gradually expand slavery to the territory of the United States by relying on the dominant power in Congress. However, they did not expect that this judgment caused a stir among the people of the northern states.

fierce protests.

The northern people who originally thought slavery had nothing to do with them suddenly remembered the ambitions of slave owners and the threat of slavery promoted by the Republican Party during the presidential campaign last year. They did not take it too seriously at first, but now the facts are before their eyes.

The "Scott Judgment" truly demonstrated the slave owners' ambitions for the North and even the whole country. If the situation is allowed to continue to develop, the entire United States will become a world of slavery!

The impact of the "Scott Decision" spread rapidly beyond imagination. This decision intensified the struggle over slavery in the South and the North, and led to the abolitionist John Brown's uprising and armed rescue of southern slaves.

The scale of this armed uprising was not large, but its impact was extremely widespread. It shocked the country and lasted until 1859. Many people joined the struggle and the call for the liberation of black slaves spread to every corner of the United States.

The abolition movement was pushed to a new climax.

And the new presidential election has arrived again.

Since the "Scott Decision", the domestic situation has become increasingly tense during this period, and the people's calls for war have become louder and louder. Under this background, the Republican Party has developed greatly, completely emerged in Congress, and overwhelmed

Without the power of the Democratic Party, President James Buchanan had long lost control of Congress, and the Democratic Party, which represented the interests of southern slave owners, was completely suppressed.

The Republican Party's campaign platform did not change much this time. Instead, it became more radical, vowing to abolish slavery and liberate black slaves in the South.

Different from the presidential election four years ago, when the threat of slavery promoted by the Republican Party was considered alarmist, the facts are now in front of them. All people have truly felt the threat of slavery. There is no need to preach any more. The Republican Party’s platform

Completely in line with the demands of the American people today, slavery must be abolished!

Therefore, Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln received enthusiastic support from the vast majority of the people.

However, the Democratic Party's declaration to maintain domestic stability was seen as a compromise with slave owners, causing great dissatisfaction among ordinary people.

The results of this election are obvious. Under the background that most people in the country firmly resist slavery, the victory of the Republican Party is the general trend!
