Chapter 5 The Kiss of the Spider

A familiar feeling emerged in Xing Ze's heart. He picked up the wine glass and smelled it. It was also honey wine, with the same faint fishy smell.

It's strange. Could it be that the other party's target is not just me? Xing Ze frowned, and things became more complicated.

After continuing to observe for a while, he picked up a small silver stick on the dining table. The stick was about the same length as an ordinary straw, and there was still a little liquid on one end.

"Interesting, most people don't bring this with them when taking the train, right?" Xing Ze asked.

Benson tilted his head and looked inside, nodded and said, "I also noticed the detection staff. Mr. Alan Hoffman seems to be a cautious person."

Cautious? Oh, you really know how to talk.

This silver detection staff is used to detect poisons and magic traps. It is one of the common equipment of Aurors. Ordinary wizards rarely take this thing on the road.

On the other hand, the poisoner was very familiar with Mr. Allen. At least he knew that he loved mead and brought a detection staff with him, so he chose to use an expensive and undetectable weapon like Spider's Kiss.

poison.

"You should interrogate Lady Rebecca and her house elves to see who has been in contact with the alcohol supply along the way." Xing Ze suggested.

Then he used his wand to open the briefcase that fell on the ground and inspected the contents.

The Traceless Stretching Charm can only be used with the approval of the Ministry of Magic. Xing Ze is not worried that this bag will be under this spell, otherwise Mr. Allen will not be able to pass the security check at all.

Most of the items in the bag had been dug out, and coins were scattered on the floor. There was only a small jar, a few documents, and a pair of old eyes.

It seems that the poisoner came in after Allen died, and he seemed to be looking for something.

"I guess he has more than that. You can ask the luggage keeper, maybe you can get some useful clues."

A trace of approval flashed across Benson's face. The young man did not panic when he saw the body. Instead, he immediately made a judgment on the cause of death.

He even looked for clues and gave suggestions in the messy scene. His professionalism and calmness far exceeded Benson's expectations.

"I've already asked the conductor and Parker to handle it, and the results will probably come out soon. However, you seem to know this very well."

Xing Ze stopped what he was doing. His old habit relapsed. His strong curiosity and professionalism as a detective always made him unconsciously analyze the case.

He responded wisely: "When I was in school, I formed a small club to learn and imitate Muggle detection methods. Do you know Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Benson?"

The old gentleman raised his lips slightly: "I heard that he is a smart fictional Muggle. I have to admit that without the help of magic, the Muggles' reconnaissance methods are indeed much better than ours."

"It seems that except for magic telegraphs and door keys, reconnaissance techniques cannot be used, right?" Xing Ze took the opportunity to change the subject.

"Yes, most of the spells have failed." Benson looked helpless, "We are in trouble."

Xing Ze took out the small jar from the deceased's bag and shook it. There was still some liquid inside.

"I'm curious, Mr. Benson, how you knew the fatal poison was Spider's Kiss."

There is a reason why Spider's Kiss is listed as an undetectable poison. Since even the detection wand cannot detect it, why can the old man in front of him be so sure?

Benson raised his eyebrows, "Can't you smell it? There's a fishy smell in the mead."

"Only this?"

Xing Ze's question made the old gentleman a little embarrassed. Just now he had questioned the young man in front of him like this, but he didn't expect that this kid was now learning and selling.

"If you've spent half your life dealing with corpse eaters and dark magic, you can tell the poison just by its smell. That thing killed half of my brothers."

Benson's tone obviously cooled down, and Xing Ze immediately explained: "Don't worry, old gentleman. You know, I'm just ruling out suspects."

"Haha, young man, the last person you should question is me."

"That's not certain. As long as the murderer hasn't shown up yet, everyone on the train will be suspected, even students."

At this moment, Officer Shafiq hurried over. He glanced at Xing Ze suspiciously and hesitated whether to speak.

"Tell me, Parker, Mr. Xing Ze has no suspicion for the time being." Benson tried to smooth things over.

"The murderer has been found." Shafiq said excitedly, "It's Bowman, Bowman List."

Benson frowned and repeated, "Bowman?"

"Yes, sir. At least two house elves saw him going to the drinks counter in carriage five, and the elf guarding the luggage also saw him."

"Where is he now?"

"I am being held in a separate compartment, waiting for your interrogation." Shafiq replied with a proud look on his face.

The old gentleman pondered for a while and said: "Leave it to you, Parker. I have to discuss something with the train conductor."

"I will interrogate you?" Officer Shafiq was a little surprised, but he quickly put away his doubts, "I assure you, sir, you will not be disappointed."

After saying that, he left quickly and excitedly.

While the two were talking, Xing Ze secretly hid the small jar in his bag. Seeing Benson turn his head, he hurriedly said: "The case is solved, old man. It seems that I can return to warmth and comfort."

In the carriage."

Benson raised his cane to block Xing Ze who was about to leave. He said cheerfully: "Don't worry, Xing Ze, doesn't it feel weird for someone as smart as you?"

Xing Ze began to hate this old man, and he asked in a deep voice: "Why me, old man, why did you choose me among so many people to participate in the investigation."

"Let's talk as we walk. It's still a long way to the conductor's office."

Benson pulled out a twisted wand from his cane, chanted a spell, and set a low-level warning spell outside the 4-A compartment.

Then, he stepped aside and motioned for Xing Ze to go ahead.

"I don't trust anyone until the murderer shows up." He followed Xing Ze and said, "As you can see, my subordinate, Officer Parker, uh..."

Having said this, the old man paused, probably arranging his words, and soon he said again: "He is a responsible police officer, but now most of the spells have lost their effect, and there is not much he can do.

I need to find another helper."

"But you can't choose from the train staff because they have more access to the drinks counter than passengers."

"Exactly."

"Then you are not afraid that I am the murderer?"

"Ah, young man, my suspicion of you has never diminished, that's why I let you follow me every step of the way."

Xing Ze stopped, turned around and said, "But now that the murderer has been found, I have no suspicion."

Benson stopped three steps away from Xing Ze. He smiled and said: "You mean Bowman? Well, as far as I know, when he was studying, his best thing was potions. Now, he is responsible for checking the things brought on the train.

Illegal potion."

"So what?"

"Spider's Kiss," Benson lowered his voice, "is a highly effective poison. Just a tiny amount can kill someone, but if too much is added, it will leave a special fishy smell. In addition, it will leave a special fishy smell.

I have to warn you, it's expensive."
