Living beings reborn in the eight hot hells suffer all kinds of great sufferings. In some hot hells, sentient beings will kill each other, but they do not die. They can only endure the pain of being killed year after month, unable to escape at all.

In the eight cold hells, sentient beings are forced to suffer varying degrees of cold pain, and may even be frozen for hundreds of kalpas, but they will not die because their karma has not been exhausted.
