Chapter 38: The Second Year of Wu

Several things happened in the Han Dynasty in the second year of Zhangwu.

First, Gongsun Du was completely wiped out in the spring of the second year. He died in the east-west attack by Gongsun Zan and Xu Rong, and burned himself to death.

The imperial court divided Youzhou into two parts. The western part of Youzhou, including the original Shanggu County, Dai County, Zhuo County, Yuyang County, Youbeiping County and Liaoxi County, was retained as Youzhou.

To the east, Liaodong County, Liaodong vassal state, Xuanzang County, Lelang County, and the newly merged Haoqian County, Fuyu County and other places were combined into six counties and changed to Liaozhou.

These places included later Liaoning Province and most of North Korea, which was still a very large area at that time.

The Samhan Peninsula has not yet been planned as a state because its area is too small, with only three counties.

However, this is only temporary. According to Chen Mu's idea, the three Koreas plus North Korea should be the size of a large state. When the time comes, they will be combined into one and merged together.

As for the Liaozhou area, we should add Fuyu, Goguryeo, Yilou and Woju to the north, which will later become Jilin Province, Heilongjiang Province and Vladivostok in Russia.

This area is more than enough to divide into a state.

In places like Northeast China alone, including North Korea and Vladivostok, it is estimated that there are more than just the three northeastern provinces, and the specific area should be around five to six provinces.

However, the troops of the imperial court have not yet reached that far, and these places are now occupied by the nomadic peoples in the northeast, so they are divided like this for the time being, and we will wait until the Han Dynasty moves further afield in the future.

The second major event was the small-scale friction between Sun and Cao.

In fact, both Sun Ce and Cao Cao knew that the quarrel between them would only benefit the court. It was best to unite together. Together, they would benefit both sides, and if they divided, they would suffer both sides. Therefore, the two sides exercised great restraint.

When Cao Cao learned that the imperial troops were marching south to Nanyang, he set a trap for Liu Biao, ostensibly agreeing to form an alliance with him, but actually planning to go south to seize Yangzhou.

As a result, Liu Biao foolishly issued a statement against Liu Bei, hoping that the righteous people in the world would unite to overthrow the imperial court and return power to Emperor Zhang's heirs.

This statement caused Liu Biao to become the target of public criticism, and the imperial army pressed on the border, making Sun Cao even think that there was an opportunity to seize Yangzhou.

So the two quickly went south, one captured Yuzhang and the other captured Danyang.

The two families are gearing up to merge.

However, no one expected the imperial court's internal response in Jingzhou, and Zhang Xian, the governor of Changsha, suddenly died of illness.

The sudden situation disrupted Sun Cao's actions, because the two had originally planned to take advantage of this time when the court's center of gravity shifted to the south to have a showdown and completely annex each other's territory.

You know, now Yuzhou, Yanzhou, and Huaibei have become a large area. Although there is no danger to defend, the Sun family relies on Sun Jian to have a good impression in front of Liu Bei, so he has been regaining the lost land for the imperial court in the name of serving the imperial court.

Therefore, after speculation by Lu Su and Zhou Yu, they believed that the imperial court would not attack Henan during this period.

What's more, many soldiers and horses of the imperial court are leaning towards Nanyang, Guanzhong and Youzhou. The troops in Luoyang, Jizhou and Qingzhou can basically only defend the homeland, and are unlikely to invade the south.

In this way, you want to annex me, and I also want to annex you. Fortunately, the court has no time to take care of them. This is a golden opportunity for both of us.

Therefore, during this period, both Zhou Yu and Guo Jia tended to take advantage of the opportunity when the imperial court had no time to look south to annex the other party.

In this way, Henan plus Huainan, Huaibei and Jiangdong will be a large area, enough for a prince to settle down and live in peace, and even have the same strength as Liu Bei and Yuan Shao.

Although from a strategic point of view, even if they annex each other, they may be attacked by the imperial court before they have time to digest it.

But the problem is that if the imperial court is stubbornly fighting in places like Jingzhou, Guanzhong and Youzhou, even if it is defeated, it will take time to digest.

Both sides need time, so if everything goes well, when the imperial court is sending troops to the north, Guanzhong and the south, it will not be able to worry about Henan and Yangzhou, and Sun Cao will have time to fight to the death.

However, the chain reaction brought about by Zhang Xian's death was that the imperial court was unlikely to have the strength to go south to attack Liu Biao who had the natural barrier of Xiangyang, so the matter could only be delayed.

Since there will be no large-scale use of troops against Liu Biao, the imperial court has the remaining power to turn its attention to Henan.

Once Sun Cao dares to fight, it will be a snipe and a clam fighting for the fisherman's profit.

So after learning the news, even if Sun Cao had already obtained Yuzhang and Danyang and wanted to go further, he had no choice but to stop and not dare to peep at each other again.

However, although large-scale wars were not fought, small-scale frictions continued. As a guard, Sun Jian impeached Cao Cao to the court many times after learning about the situation in Luoyang.

In fact, in a sense, Sun Jian was not a fool. Although he was loyal to the court, he could still see his son's ambition.

However, Sun Ce did not directly rebel, and on the surface he was still serving the imperial court.

Secondly, although the Sun Family Army was created by Sun Jian, Sun Ce has already established a foothold in the Sun Family Army. Except for the four veteran generals Huang Gai, Han Dang, Zu Mao, and Cheng Puhui who obey Sun Jian, most of the Sun Family soldiers have already followed Sun Ce.

The horse's head is right.

Therefore, even though Sun Jian had vaguely guessed it, he was somewhat powerless.

The main reason is that Sun Ce has been leading the troops to fight Yuan Shu in these years. Sun Jian himself is loyal to the court. Under Liu Yu's call, he led troops north several times to help the court fight against Yuan Shao, which made his control over Yuzhou much looser, and the army also

Most of them are controlled by Sun Ce.

Moreover, now that he himself has been summoned to Luoyang by Chen Mu to serve as the ninth minister, he is no longer in Runan, and his control over Yuzhou has been further weakened.

So from a practical point of view, it is an indisputable fact that Sun Ce has completely controlled the Sun family army.

Sun Jian may have known that if things continued like this, Sun Ce might become an enemy of the imperial court in the future.

But he didn't dare to believe it.

After all, I had been loyal to the imperial court all my life, but when I was nearly fifty, I was in danger of losing my life because of the rebellion of my son. Who would want to believe it?

There was constant friction between Sun and Cao, which was a good thing for the court.

Therefore, even though Sun Jian repeatedly petitioned for impeachment, high-level cabinet meetings suppressed the matter.

Chen Mu personally talked to Sun Jian, first praising him for his actions in Yuzhou, and then telling him that the imperial court was now focusing on Guanzhong and stabilizing the north, and had no time to look south.

And he also told Sun Jian that the imperial court recognized Sun Ce's role in containing Cao Cao in the south. When the time comes, the imperial court will send generals south to annihilate Yanzhou, Xuzhou and Yangzhou in one fell swoop, hoping that he can take care of the overall situation.

In this case, Sun Jian could only stop his activities and stop impeaching Cao Cao.

Then there's the third thing.

Guang Luxun and Huandian died of illness, leaving a vacancy in Jiuqing.

The three ministers and nine ministers had many responsibilities, and the court often sent them to inspect places.

For example, as a Taiwei and a part-time censor, Yang Biao's previous function was to be in charge of the national army in name only, but now he is in charge of the National Supervisory Yuan, which has the function of supervising hundreds of officials and is equivalent to the Discipline Inspection Commission.

Zhao Wen, as Situ and concurrently as the dean of the Civil Affairs Bureau, was in charge of official promotions and reviewing the moral standards of officials, which was equivalent to the Organization Department.

Zhong Fu was Sikong, in charge of the People's Yuan and the Industrial Yuan, equivalent to the Ministry of Household Affairs and the Ministry of Industry.

They patrol around and supervise the government affairs of local officials.

Guang Luxun's current functions have been changed to the Metropolitan Procuratorate, and the Three Departments of the Han Dynasty have been reformed. The Metropolitan Procuratorate, Weiyuan and Dali Yuan are today's Three Departments of Public Security, Prosecution and Law.

They are jointly supervised by the Supervisory Yuan headed by the Taiwei, and they also supervise each other to prevent local officials from abusing their powers and causing harm to the countryside.

Guang Luxun Huandian went to Qingzhou this year to inspect the working methods of the local Metropolitan Procuratorate, but he died of illness on the way.

Sima Fang, the captain of Sili School, succeeded Guang Luxun and officially became one of the Nine Qings.

But Sili Xiaowei was vacant again.

So Xuanfan, the Censor Zhongcheng, took the place, and then another Censor Zhongcheng was left vacant, just like a matryoshka doll.

Finally, after discussion, the imperial court decided to summon Ma Teng to Beijing.

When Ma Teng learned that he was going to be the Yushi Zhongcheng, he abandoned the army without hesitation and came to Luoyang with his whole family.

Also coming were his brother Ma Yi, nephews Ma Dai, Ma Kang and others.

The current Yushi Zhongcheng no longer has as much real power as before. Because there are no Yushi officials in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Yushi Zhongcheng is actually in charge of the discipline issues of all officials.

Now the Taiwei has the authority to control the Supervisory Yuan and is the president of the Supreme Supervisory Yuan. The Sanduzui has now been raised to the second rank, which is similar to the Jiuqing. The Yushi doctor is at the same level as the Sili Xiaowei and Shangshuling, and their powers are

Vice President of the Supreme Supervisory Yuan, assisting the Taiwei to supervise all officials.

But the power is definitely in the hands of the Taiwei, so when encountering an accomplished Taiwei, the Yushi Zhongcheng often acts empty-handed. Just like in history, Cao Cao summoned Ma Teng to the capital to serve as a guard of one of the nine ministers, but killed him as soon as he said it.

real power.

But Ma Teng was still very happy.

Because at the end of last year, he sent people to Qingzhou to purchase a batch of glass, shipped it to Guanzhong, and sold it to businessmen traveling between Guanzhong and the Western Regions, making a lot of money.

Transparent glass tends to be cheap in Qingzhou, but it is a treasure in the Western Regions.

After all, although there was glass in the Roman Empire, it was not transparent glass. There was a market for this high-quality glass.

Therefore, when the glass is transported to Guanzhong and then sold to merchants who go to the Western Regions to sell goods, the price difference is not double or triple.

Although transporting glass is not easy, this time Ma Teng spent all his efforts to find a way to get a group of glass transported in the grain and grass transport convoy.

And when we got there, the road was bumpy, so even if we laid a lot of straw to prevent falling, it was broken a lot.

But the remaining glass still allowed Ma Teng to make a fortune.

In fact, the Silk Road in the Western Regions is now much worse than before due to the war.

However, as the earliest cultural exchange corridor between the East and the West, the Silk Road has never been cut off.

Especially in the early years, Su Shuang and Zhang Shiping sent people to Shendu to purchase large quantities of cotton seeds, support the country in the Western Regions, and plant cotton, which made the Silk Road begin to have a second spring.

After more than ten years, the Western Regions are still in chaos. The huge profits brought by cotton have made the remaining seven countries in the Western Regions troubled.

Moreover, Qingzhou has been purchasing asbestos from the Western Regions in recent years and sent it as material to Qingzhou for research by major colleges.

It's just that this kind of mineral is not widely available in open-pit mines in the Western Regions. In addition, the sealing performance of asbestos is incomparable to that of rubber. To achieve a complete seal, you need to wrap the asbestos rope many times. The large size will cause the internal structure of the steam engine to appear.

question.

There are also reasons such as poor road transportation, which is not as convenient as cotton transportation, and the profits are relatively low, which make the seven countries in the Western Regions unwilling to make great efforts to mine asbestos.

If the output cannot be increased, it will naturally be difficult for asbestos to become the main material of steam engines.

Therefore, the trade in the Western Regions was mainly based on cotton.

It can be said that much of the wealth Qingzhou has accumulated over the years has been spent on purchasing cotton.

Xiliang warlords such as Han Sui and Ma Teng also took a share of this trade, causing the price of cotton to be comparable to silk at the time.

Chen Mu was eager to clear out the princes in Guanzhong and open up trade routes to the Western Regions. Expensive cotton was also a reason.

Ma Teng has also made some assets from cotton over the years.

But the problem is that his territory is actually in the Sanfu area. Unlike Han Sui, who held the main road in the Western Region, Han Sui took the big share and Ma Teng only made a small one.

After being defeated by Han Sui, Ma Teng's assets were almost wiped out. As an old Qin native who was afraid of poverty when he was a child, Ma Teng now has only one thought in his mind - to get rich and return to the top.

In fact, Ma Teng still has a warlord mentality.

Expand your own team and use the army as the foundation for your survival in troubled times.

But to develop and grow, you need money and food, and the most important thing is money.

Ma Teng has no money.

So after discovering this business opportunity, he let Ma Chao continue to control his army and went to Luoyang himself to officially coordinate the matter.

This chapter is not finished yet, please click on the next page to continue reading the exciting content! Except for glass, Qingzhou will make all the new things that can be sold in the Western Regions.

Relying on his connections in Xiliang and being friendly with many Qiang tribes, his business path was very smooth. After all, Han Sui could not block all the passages, and there was always a way to transport things to Xiliang.

Just like Lü Meng crossing the river in white, merchants seemed to be inconspicuous in this era. Except for Mi Zhu, who was famous, there were almost no records of merchants participating in the struggle for hegemony in troubled times in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.

However, the circulation of goods is indispensable in any era. Killing merchants is a waste of money, so even the most cruel princes will never attack merchants who transport goods.

In addition to these few things, there are some other things.

For example, Han Sui wanted to know the specific strength of the imperial court, so he sent Yan Xing to Luoyang to meet with Liu Bei to find out the truth.

Liu Bei met the envoy in person, and after seeing Yan Xing, he greatly appreciated him.

Along the way, Yan Xing also saw the strength of the imperial court, and he thought of persuading Han Sui to surrender to the imperial court. After returning to Xiliang, he made this suggestion.

However, Han Sui hesitated again and again and refused. However, at Yan Xing's insistence, he finally sent his son and Yan Xing's parents and family to Luoyang as hostages in the hope that the court would not attack Xiliang.

Liu Biao also contacted other princes everywhere, and even sent envoys to Yizhou Liu Zhang. After all, he wanted to become a separatist warlord who controlled the land and ruled the land. No one wanted to give up his foundation.

Therefore, even Liu Zhang and Liu Biao, who had proclaimed themselves emperor and were regarded as enemies by all the princes in the world, seemed to have grasped a life-saving straw and tried to form an alliance.

Finally, Lu Bu successfully defeated Nanguan in Bingzhou.

Nanguan is one of the four Shangdang passes. It is an important passage connecting Shangdang County to Taiyuan. It has been a battleground for military strategists since ancient times. It is known as "the gateway to southern Hebei and the throat of Luze".

In fact, Nanguan was only built in the Song Dynasty, but before the Song Dynasty, the Jin Dynasty established a city here in the Spring and Autumn Period, and a county was established in the Han Dynasty, named Nie County. Therefore, although it was not called Nanguan at this time, it was no different from the pass.

Lu Bu conquered Nie County and took control of the road to Taiyuan County. However, the road along the way was narrow and narrow to the south. He was afraid of an ambush by senior officials, so he did not advance for the time being.

At present, places such as Yanmen in Taiyuan are still controlled by high-ranking cadres. Historically, high-ranking cadres were killed when they took the initiative to attack Cao Cao, resulting in the recapture of Bingzhou.

But now he is huddled in the Jinzhong Basin in Yanmen, Taiyuan, and there are Xiutu tribes such as the Southern Xiongnu and the central Xianbei to help him. It is not that easy for Lu Bu to defeat Gao Gan and recapture the entire Bingzhou.

However, Chen Mu left this mess to Lu Bu for the time being. If Lu Bu didn't do anything, or if he had some crooked ideas and wanted to attack the east of the river from Shangdangguan, then he wouldn't be blamed.

When my hands are free in the future, I will wipe out Lu Bu's senior officials and the Xiongnu Xianbei gang.

Therefore, the court didn't bother to care about Lu Bu's activities and just let them go.

By the end of the second year of Zhangwu, after two years of recuperation, Jizhou finally resumed governance, and the north was basically pacified except for the merging of states.

The local area was governed, and the people lived and worked in peace and contentment. The army was reorganized on a large scale, the old and weak were eliminated, and a large number of war-weary soldiers were reduced. A recruitment system was implemented, childbirth was encouraged, farming and mulberry teaching was encouraged, water canals were built, and large-scale construction was carried out.

The entire Jizhou, Qingzhou, Youzhou and even Guanzhong are glowing with vitality.

Especially Guanzhong.

When Guan Yu Zhangwu went there in the first year of his reign, it could be described as a state of chaos, with a declining population and people struggling to survive.

After a year and a half, it was managed in an orderly manner by the officials from Taishan Academy.

The population began to grow significantly.

Of course these people cannot be conjured out of thin air.

They were originally people who had fled to various places due to war, such as Hedong, Hanzhong, Longyou and other places.

Some even hide in the deep mountains and old forests, living a secluded life like a peach blossom garden.

However, only a few people have such a good environment as Peach Blossom Spring. Many people are actually living a very difficult life, hiding in the mountains with no guarantee of survival.

Now that I heard that the imperial court had regained Guanzhong, distributed fields to the refugees, and would not levy taxes for five years, the people returned to the Guanzhong area one after another, enriching the population of Guanzhong.

And if after you return to Guanzhong, even if you have land and have planted food, before the food is harvested, you lack money and food to survive, the court will let you work for relief and build a canal.

People in the Han Dynasty were forced to do hard labor, not to mention being paid. Sometimes they were not even given food, and you were required to bring your own dry food.

Nowadays, the imperial court is rich and powerful. It has dug a large amount of gold, silver and copper mines from Japan, and smelted brass to make five baht coins. The quality is high and it will not rust. It is used as coins, and a large amount of copper coins flow into the people.

The imperial court gained water transportation, the people gained money, and it was a win-win situation for both the government and the people.

This is much better than the prodigal son of Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty who only dispatched civilian workers to build the canal without caring about their life and death.

It's just that whenever there is such a big project, there are many corrupt officials who are involved in it, depriving the people of their salaries and substituting their food as good quality.

Therefore, as long as it is a national-level major project, such as the construction of a canal, the Supervisory Yuan and the Civil Service Yuan will be directly involved to prevent corruption.

Thinking from another perspective, this can be regarded as giving Yang Biao, Zhao Wen Zhongfu and other three officials and nine ministers something to do, so as to prevent them from dictating other major national affairs.

In the midst of prosperity, the second year of Zhangwu came to an end. At the end of the second year of Zhangwu, Liu Bei convened a grand meeting of all officials.

Announced the restoration of the former Han Dynasty prime minister system!
