Chapter 73: Rebuilding a country (I)(1/2)

As a training ground for siege tactics, Maple Leaf Fort has been ravaged by the Iron Peak County Army in the past month.

The land that was originally carefully leveled around the fortress is now dug into pieces, covered with twists and turns and trenches of varying width and narrowness.

If you look down from the sky, the radial trench is not like the tentacles extending from the siege camp to the fortress, but rather like the roots spreading from the fortress to the siege camp.

Although the main structure of Maple Leaf Fort's "rammed earth and stone" is extremely strong, in addition to the 32-pound heavy artillery seized, the Tiefeng County Army is the most skilled and the six-pound long cannon with the largest number of shells on it and it feels like itchy when it is tickled.

However, this did not prevent the artillery of the Iron Peak County Army from dismantling the defense of Maple Leaf Fort.

Summarizing the experience and lessons learned from past siege wars, from the first day of the siege, artillery commander Richard Mason assigned different tasks to light and heavy artillery:

The heavy artillery, which is difficult to move and slowly load, is set up in solid fortifications, and is concentrated on bombarding several specific weak walls; the light and flexible six-pound long cannon is not deployed in a fixed position, but is pushed to anywhere they are needed, close to firing, and specifically hitting the horizontal walls, city walls and shooting platforms above the main structure of the fortress.

Senior Mason, who worked hard to break up the veterans and new soldiers of the artillery team, mixed them up and reorganized them into several times the number of artillery groups, leading the new ones, and took turns to operate the artillery.

After nearly a month of long shelling, most of the buildings on the Maple Leaf Fort's city were destroyed, leaving only bare walls. Whenever the wind blows, choking dust will be raised.

The Triangle Fort in the northwest and southwest directions were also bombarded with thirty-two-pound guns to break out of many gaps.

Losing the defensive bunker at the upper part of the fortress, the defenders did not dare to climb the wall to shoot the enemy outside the city during the day - that was tantamount to being a target for people to attack.

Even though the soldiers of the Tiefeng County Army carried small baskets and came to the foot of the fort wall and swayed to pick up the shells that were shot out, the defenders could only watch the other party leave.

The defenders could not even repair it - every time the defenders took advantage of the night to restore some of the cover on the city wall, they would attract more intense artillery fire the next day until the guards were struggling to move the wooden barrels on the city wall and all the earth baskets were broken before they would give up.

If you do nothing, you won’t eat shells.

After a few round trips, the defenders in Maple Leaf Fort reached a unilateral tacit understanding with the attackers outside Maple Leaf Fort: If I don’t build a wall, you won’t hit me, everyone will be at peace with each other and be able to live a day.

Just as the defenders in Maple Leaf Fort were gradually losing their cans, on the other side, the novice artillery soldiers of the Tiefeng County Army were satisfied and even got a little bored with fighting.

It is no exaggeration to say that the artillery soldiers of some standing legion forces fired in the past ten years are not as good as their shooting in this month.

After such practical training, the artillery detachment of the Tiefeng County Army was ready to receive more artillery - just waiting for the Revodan Smelter to successfully cast the cannon.

When both the offense and defense entered a burnout period, Colonel Geisa, Colonel Skur and Lieutenant Colonel Magash also sent some officers and soldiers to the siege site of Maple Leaf Fort, called "Assisting in the Battle" and actually "visiting and learning".

Anyone can see that the Maple Leaf Castle is a crumbling and broken house.

Just wait for someone to come up and kick it.

The two people who decided when to kick this kick were watching it in the artillery bunker close to Maple Leaf Castle.

"I'm thinking about one thing."

Senior Mason put one hand in a tube shape, pressed it in front of his eyes, and aimed at the Maple Leaf Fort not far away. This is the artillery trick, which can make people clearer when looking at the distance.

"Um?"

Winters responded absent-mindedly as he peeled the grass roots in his hand.

"Are you..." Senior Mason seemed to ask casually: "I never thought about using my allocation plan from the beginning."

Winters continued to deal with: "Yes."

Before Winters realized what he had answered, Senior Mason had already pounced on him, pinched Winters' throat with both hands, and swayed left and right: "Then why do you want me to do it? Do you know how much time I spent, how many nights I spent, how much hair I lost? Ah?!"

"Uh." Winters closed his eyes: "I'm dead."

Senior Mason let go of Winters, sweeps the dust on his clothes, and kicks Winters: "Pretend to death and be serious."

"Don't be angry, senior." Winters handed the clean white grass roots to the senior and said with a compliment: "Please eat sweet grass."

Mason took the grassroots and put it in his mouth.

"Ph, it's bitter."

“It seems that the season is not yet here.”

In this place far away from subordinates and outsiders, Winters and Mason no longer have to maintain the image that people expect, and naturally restored the lively nature of some people who were originally of this age.

The defenders in Triangle Fort heard the movement outside and secretly crawled out of the Tibetan military cave, revealing their heads to look out.

Winters picked up a stone and hit the defenders next to them, scaring the latter back.

"Two battalions are feinted, one battalion is the main attack." Winters turned over and sat against the wall of the artillery bunker, giving a relatively conservative estimate: "Start an assault at dawn, and you should be able to take it before dawn."

"It's too exaggerated." Seeing that Winters was about to talk about the serious business, Senior Mason also put away his anger and shook his head seriously: "Half a battalion is enough, the gap is so large, and too many troops can't be used."

After saying this, the artillery bunker fell into a brief silence.

After a while, Winters whispered to himself: "But, the big battle has survived. It's not worth dying in such a place at such a time."

Mason sighed when he heard this.

No matter how much preparations are made or how much firepower is invested, Maple Leaf Fort is still the base camp that the Xinkendi Legion has devoted 20 years of hard work to build, and it is still the most solid fortress in Xinkendi.

Even if it is already shaking, it is impossible to kick it down without bleeding.

Hearing this, Mason sighed again.

After a moment of silence, Mason looked at the giant in front of him who was still standing despite his bruises and bruises: "Why haven't he surrendered yet?"

...

Meanwhile, in Maple Leaf Castle, the poor Major [Alder Felt] fell into deep self-doubt: "Are I too awesome?"

Staring at the erratic candlelight on the square table, Major Felt shouted speechlessly: "Why haven't they come to persuade me to surrender yet?!"

If anyone who made progress faster than the Iron Peak County gunners in this siege of more than a month must be Major Ald Felt.

All the education, training and training that the major received throughout his life, all the knowledge, techniques and means learned, and even the mind, body and virtue given to him by his parents, seemed to be prepared in advance for this siege battle.

The rebels opened the gap in the Triangle Fort, and he built fences overnight to block it; the rebels smashed the bunkers on the city walls, so he organized people to make earth baskets to repair them; the bunkers on the city were repaired and then damaged, so he changed to digging Tibetan soldiers' holes on the reverse slope and tenaciously maintaining their strength at the city. The morale of his subordinates was low, so he ate and lived with the soldiers, personally mowed baskets and dug soil, and worked with shovels; the subordinates did not dare to climb the city, so he dressed neatly and inspected all parts of the defense line every day.

In this siege that was almost lingchi, Alder Felt not only maintained the morale of his subordinates at the bottom line, so that the latter would not completely collapse. He also maintained the most basic discipline of his subordinates so that the latter would not tie himself up and surrender.

Even Major Felt himself wanted to cry for himself when he realized such a glorious achievement in such a difficult situation.

So much so that Major Felt sometimes couldn't help asking himself: "Is it really that I am too powerful? Is the rebels afraid to launch a general attack for a long time? Or... or are they deliberately... giving in to me?"

Every time the thoughts arise, Major Felt would slap himself in the face and ask himself to dispel such random thoughts.

He forced himself to believe that the reason why the rebels were reluctant to launch a close-range assault was not because they deliberately did not do so, but because their efforts forced them not to launch an attack easily.

It wasn't that Ald Felt was too stupid to see the situation clearly, but because without that slap in the face, the major would probably collapse earlier than his subordinates.

So he chose to believe in the "reality" he was willing to believe.

To be fair, although the design of Maple Leaf Fort is a bit out of date, this does not prevent it from causing great difficulties to the enemy. Even in the eyes of the United Provincial Officers, it is a fortress that cannot be shaken easily.

Maple Leaf Fort is not short of weapons, ammunition, and food. If there are 500 qualified soldiers under your command, the enemy will not suffer three times the casualties, and you will not even think about touching the inner wall of Maple Leaf Fort. If the enemy surrounds and does not attack, Maple Leaf Fort can defend until the end of the world.

Unfortunately, Felt only has about five hundred numbers in his hands, the weak, the sick and the disabled.

If you give the enemy three times the casualties, don’t even think about it, let alone “stay until the end of the world”.

Everyone knows with their butts that Maple Leaf Fort must not be able to defend, either surrender or die. Without sufficient reasons, everyone will choose to surrender.

Therefore, Ald Felt's number one problem is how to maintain the morale of these remnants and defeated generals so that they will not collapse - the most important thing is not to "collapse early".

As soon as he had the chance, Major Felt would instill in his subordinates the idea that "it is better to surrender late than to surrender early, and it is better to wait for others to surrender voluntarily."

In a sense, Major Felt did not lie.

According to the convention of the Paratus, the winner has absolute dominance over the losers and can be executed, sold and enslaved prisoners at will.

However, the execution and sale of the Heards will only happen in the war now.

It has to be said that the establishment of the republic system has profoundly changed this land.

In the past, the "Palatu people" was just a loose concept. The war between the Palato people was an attack and killing between the lords, the massacre between the rulers and the rebels, and killing prisoners was to kill the enemy, so the Palato people were never ruthless.

However, when the imperial system came to an end and the concept of "a country belonging to everyone" was widely spread and accepted, killing prisoners changed from killing enemies to killing compatriots, and was no longer tolerated by public morality.

However, although the republican system changed the Palatuns, so far, not much has changed.

Although the Palathus today believe that killing their compatriots is unethical, there is no psychological burden on the acts of exploiting ransoms and forced labor from "defeated compatriots".

Major Felt keenly grasped this pain point and once he had the chance, he would complain to his subordinates about his interests.

First, let’s talk about how bad the fate of being a prisoner is - most of it was imagined by Major Felt; then let’s talk about how strong the city defense of Maple Leaf Castle is - this is not a scam; finally, he promoted his ultimate theory - Maple Leaf Castle is a bargaining chip for everyone in Maple Leaf Castle, and everyone can use Maple Leaf Castle to exchange for good treatment with the rebels; so you must defend! The longer you defend, the better the treatment!

The best ending for everyone is to defend until the rebels are powerless, the rebels can't help but hold on, and the rebels take the initiative to persuade them to surrender.

Major Felt even composed a loud slogan, leading the defenders to shout three times before eating every day:

"Open the door and surrender, be a cow and a horse; wait for others to surrender, and take the money home."

Through the indoctrination of this theory, Major Felt also popularized his advanced inferences to his subordinates. Since Maple Leaf Castle is the negotiating capital of everyone, then whoever surrenders himself will betray the collective and sells his friends for honor. It is abominable, shameful, and unforgivable!

This chapter is not over, please click on the next page to continue reading! As a result, Major Felt realized the self-supervision of the defenders. Everyone is the supervisor, and he always stared at him to prevent any villain from wanting to put everyone's capital into his pocket.

However, a month has passed.

The rebels outside Maple Leaf Fort came and left, and the military flags were changed several times, but the people who persuaded surrender never appeared.

"Can't it?" Major Felt couldn't help but fall into deep doubts: "I'm really too awesome?"
