Chapter 19 The Relics of Death

The wand chooses the wizard, or the wizard chooses the wand. This is a classic question in wandology.

Since the birth of the wand as a tool, it has been debated by wandmakers, with both sides holding different opinions, forming a debate that has lasted for thousands of years.

Just like sweet and salty tofu nao, they always regard the other party as a heretic.

Grigovitch firmly believed that wizards choose wands.

"A wand is simply a sentient magical object that allows a wizard to direct his or her own magical power and focus its effects to achieve more complex purposes."

Grigovitch’s eyes were bright and his words were vivid:

"It's like a pair of shoes. After you put them on, they can protect your feet and make you walk faster, more stable, and safer. But the shoes will never choose your feet, only your feet will choose the shoes."

The old man paused and continued: "If the wand really chooses the wizard, for people who are not chosen by it, magic should not be released when using the wand."

"But the fact is that wizards can use any wand..." Gregovich pointed to the wand on the wall shelf with his right hand, turned his fingers in a circle and said:

"You can release magic if you pick one at random, but which one you choose ultimately depends on the wizard himself... This is the wizard's choice of wand."

"Why do some wands work like an arm and use fingers, but some wands are unable to release magic smoothly?" Rolf asked again in confusion.

"It's a matter of running-in." Gregorovich spoke slowly and patiently, explaining:

"Shoes that are similar in size to your feet are definitely more comfortable to wear than shoes that are too different.

The same goes for wands.

Some wands have similar personalities to wizards and are easy to use for the first time; some are too different and are very sluggish to use and require a long period of running-in.

The job of a wand shop is to select the wand that best suits the customer among the many wands."

The old man stood up and walked slowly:

"But even so, the selected wands cannot completely fit the wizard. After all, these wands are all finished products made in advance.

Just like standard-sized clothes, no matter how close they are to your measurements, they will never fit you better than tailor-made clothes.”

Rolf was thoughtful.

"However, the wand itself has the ability to learn." Grigovitch said: "It will continue to learn from the wizard until it reaches the closest connection with the wizard."

"So, when I sell wands, I always give priority to their power. As for the issue of running-in, it's almost enough. I won't be as fussy about spending money as Ollivander."

"What does the power of the wand have to do with it?" Rolf asked curiously.

"Wood and core." Grigovitch said concisely:

"The same wizard uses the Fire Dragon Heart Nerve Wand and the Unicorn Hair Wand with the same grinding level. The magic cast by the former is significantly stronger than that of the latter.

Therefore, wandmakers always tend to use powerful magical creatures."

"Where is the Elder Wand?" Rolf suddenly asked: "Why is it so special and powerful?"

Hearing the word "Elder Wand", the old man was obviously very surprised. He hesitated to speak and looked at the young man. After a long time, he said in a deep voice:

"Child, do you also know about the Elder Wand?"

Rolf nodded and said: "The Elder Wand, the Death Wand, the Destiny Wand, they have appeared under different names for many centuries, and everyone knows it."

"More people think it's just a nonsense legend." Gregovich sighed:

"But the Elder Wand is completely traceable in history. Of course there will be interruptions, long interruptions. It will disappear from people's sight, be temporarily lost or hidden, but it will always reappear."

"It also has certain identifiable features that people who have studied wand science will recognize. There are some written records, some of which are very obscure. I have studied them specifically, and those records have a certain degree of authenticity."

Grigovitch paused for a moment and said slowly:

"According to those records, the Elder Wand, like other wands, has the ability to learn. But the learning ability of the Elder Wand is difficult for even the most outstanding wizards to match."

"Each of its owners was a very powerful wizard. Over the long years, it followed those wizards and accumulated countless knowledge, thus becoming more powerful."

"The inheritance of the Elder Wand is often accompanied by killing, and it has gained rich experience in battle.

It can cast the most appropriate magic on its own to fight against the enemy without even requiring the owner's orders."

"Can the Elder Wand still perform magic on its own?" Rolf asked in surprise.

"That's right." Gregovich said seriously:

"I have never found such a self-awareness in any other wand.

It is like a powerful wizard... possessing rich magical knowledge and powerful combat experience, so that most people are no match for it.

This is why the Elder Wand is called 'the wand that never loses'."

"Grandpa, can't you make a similar wand with your ability?" Karin asked.

"It can't be made." Gregovich shook his head and said with a bitter smile:

"The wood of the Elder Wand is elderberry, and the core is thestral tail feathers. I have used this combination before, but it is no stronger than other wands."

"The power of the Elder Wand has nothing to do with the material itself, but a problem with the forging process." Gregovich sighed.

"Its maker, Antioch Peverell, probably mastered a skill that cannot be mastered by existing staff makers, just like the forging of weapons by goblins."

"Is it really like in the story of the three brothers that Antioch Peverell received help from the God of Death?" Karin guessed.

"It may not be impossible." Gregorovich said solemnly:

"Who can be sure that the God of Death really does not exist? Is the pursuit of those saints so difficult that it is really just a fantasy?"

Rolf and Karin looked at each other, and the girl said, "Grandpa, do you know something? Tell us carefully."

"Why are you suddenly interested in this?" Gregovich looked at his granddaughter and asked with a smile:

"I used to talk to you about the Elder Wand and the Deathly Hallows, but you were always impatient and thought I was telling stories."

Karin explained: "Grandpa, we met the saints on the road, so we wanted to know more about the Deathly Hallows and the God of Death."

The girl briefly told what happened on the way, but of course, she concealed the story of her smuggling.

"The saint actually attacked the floating dragon ship?" Grigovic narrowed his eyes and asked in confusion:

"It's strange that they are only interested in the Deathly Hallows and never participate in such terrorist attacks."

"Grandpa, how do you know they never participate in such attacks?" Karin asked.

"The Elder Wand is a very attractive object for those of us who study wands." Grigovitch sighed:

"In order to find it, I also joined the Saints and rose to a very high level, so I know the Saints organization very well."

"You ask whether Death exists... In the hands of saints, there is an immortal corpse, which is said to be the relics of Death."
