Chapter 1918 Southwest Railway

Due to the complex geographical environment of the southwestern region of the empire, the construction of railways to the southwestern region was quite difficult.

In the era when there was no large-scale machinery and equipment, railway construction basically relied on manpower. This construction mode was fine in places with relatively good terrain conditions such as plains, but when the terrain was complex, especially in mountainous areas, it often became very difficult.

difficulty.

Therefore, when constructing railways in the contemporary Datang Dynasty, the first consideration in route selection was not factors such as distance and cities passing through, but more of topographic issues.

This is even more obvious in the construction of railways in the southwestern region. Even though the Tang Empire had a complete plan for the transportation construction of the southwestern subway, whether it was Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan or Guangxi, they all had railway projects.

Naturally, Sichuan's Sichuan-Hankou Railway is under construction. However, due to the difficulty of construction, the completion time is expected to be relatively late.

As for Yunnan-Guizhou, there is a southwest railway under construction. Since this railway is called the southwest railway, it naturally reflects its status as a railway trunk line.

The railway line will start from Changsha, then enter Guizhou and arrive at Guiyang, then continue into Yunnan, and finally arrive at Kunming. This railway is more difficult to repair than the Sichuan-Hankou Railway, so don't expect to see it completed in the short term.

At the same time, in Guangxi, there is also a Guangxi Railway that extends from the Guangdong-Han Railway, then enters Guangxi, and finally passes through Guilin, arrives at Liuzhou, and finally arrives at Nanning, and then continues southward into Lianzhou. In addition, there is a railway branch line from Hezhou to Guilin.

Because Hezhou can directly connect to the Guangdong railway network.

However, for the above-mentioned railways in Guangxi, due to the complex terrain and difficulty in construction, currently only the railway line from Lianzhou to Nanning has been completed, and the others are still under construction.

On the one hand, the construction progress of these railways is slow, but on the other hand, what prompted Yunnan and Guangxi to jointly promote the construction of the Songping-Kunming Railway (Jiaozhou Songping, Yunnan-Kunming) was because Yunnan wanted to obtain a relatively close outlet to the sea.

As for Guangxi, after taking over Jiaozhou, they are also preparing to focus on building this only Linhai state in Guangxi.

If there had not been a railway from Lianzhou to Guangning before, people in Guangxi were planning to build a railway from Nanning to Songping.

The route survey of the Song-Kunming Railway had already begun. Once Datang accepted Jiaozhou and several nearby areas, it immediately entered construction mode.

Moreover, the Railway Corporation is very optimistic that the construction progress of this railway will be faster than that of the Southwest Railway and the entire line will be completed earlier.

Once this railway is completed, it will provide great assistance to the development of the areas along the railway, especially in Yunnan. This will completely change the history of Yunnan having no railways.

The construction of the Song-Kunming Railway was part of the Tang Dynasty's Nanyang Peninsula strategy, and it was also part of the Tang Empire's support for the southwestern provinces.

There are many ways to provide support, but in the past decade or so, Datang officials have basically reached a consensus that one-sided financial support or helping to introduce enterprises are secondary.

The most important thing is to improve the local transportation. Otherwise, no matter how we guide enterprises, people will not be willing to invest.

This is not to mention the problem of cargo transportation. Even people can only take horse-drawn carriages to travel on the official road to get in and out. No one can bear to spend ten days and a half on the road casually.

This is true for everyone, let alone goods.

Today's industrial and commercial development in Datang has long since broken away from the manual workshop model. The processing and manufacturing industry is developing towards centralization and large-scale development. Enterprises need to obtain huge quantities of raw materials from various places, and they also need to transport the products to various places in a timely manner.

Go to sales.

For many companies, this region is just the surrounding area, but for large companies, it means the whole country, and for some special companies, it means the whole world.

Therefore, transportation is very important.

Why can coastal port cities like Songjiang Prefecture and Guangzhou Prefecture develop? But many resource producing areas, such as many inland cities, cannot develop?

In the final analysis, it is still a traffic problem!

When Emperor Sheng was in Xuanping for 20 years, he already gave an oral instruction at the Imperial Cabinet meeting: Traffic problems are the first problem that must be solved to develop the local economy!

Among the many problems that restrict the development of southwest China today, transportation problems are the primary problem.

That's why the Chief Envoy of Yunnan Province bothered with the Song-Kunming Railway.

But this is only for Yunnan. For the local people in Jiaozhou, especially for the newly appointed officials of the Jiaozhou Prefecture Yamen, the development of Yunnan next door has nothing to do with them.

All they care about is the development of Jiaozhou!

Today's Jiaozhou is a blank slate. The South Vietnamese have completely evacuated, and imperial immigrants are gradually arriving.

According to the plan of the Immigration and Reclamation Department, Jiaozhou will receive at least 300,000 people.

This 300,000 people is not that many. If placed in the Central Plains or other prosperous places, it is actually just the population of a county. For the huge Jiaozhou, 300,000 people are relatively small, and may even cause a large population in a large area.

A rare situation.

After all, a place like Jiaozhou had a population of hundreds of thousands before the South Vietnamese moved there, and this population figure was the result of years of war. Before the war, this place would have had a population of at least one million people.

However, in order to increase the enthusiasm of immigrants, Datang immigrants often provide a large amount of free land. In this case, they can also arrange for 300,000 immigrants. This is still because the area of Jiaozhou has been developed well. If it is replaced by

If we go to other places, even if the place is big enough, it still cannot accommodate 300,000 immigrants.

But even so, the Immigration and Reclamation Division spent a lot of effort to recruit these 300,000 people. It originally planned to recruit immigrants from the Central Plains and several northern provinces, but when people heard that it was the land of South Vietnam, it was directly

He shook his head.

The world is so big. Even though their hometown was hit by a disaster and they were forced to immigrate, they would not go to Southeast Asia because their lives would be too long...

Nowadays, there are too many immigration options for the people of the empire. Leaving aside overseas countries, there are actually many places to go in the mainland.

For example, Liaodong and Northeastern provinces have been recruiting immigrants.

Ha Phong Province also recruits immigrants all year round, not only farmers but also herdsmen.

Then Gansu and Tubo too.

And in Haidong Province in recent years, there have been hundreds of acres of land.

Xibei Province is even more exaggerated. As long as you dare to go, you will be given large tracts of pasture!

It's just that it's freezing cold in that poor place, so not many people go there even though it's like this.

After all, most people can't stand the winter in these places where the winter is tens of degrees below zero and the winter is extremely long.
